Hi guys,

New to the forum, and generally a n00b even though Ive been vaping for over a year now!

I used to smoke cigarettes every day (last one was over a year ago now). I tried afew products from Costco, but due to my lack of knowledge/ research, I stopped using them when they started to taste weird ('coils' or atomizer or whatever is the correct term likely burnt out).

I then discovered the Vype Epen, which has this part built in to each individual cartridge and so never had this problem- it was this that finally got me off the cigarettes. Im now at the stage where Im ready to do this properly, as the Epen is costing me a fortune (using nearly 3 cartridges a day, which is nearly £7 a day!). This is about 4.5ml of liquid a day I believe, for reference.

What Id like to find is an affordable, easy to use (and change out parts) vaper that will allow me to buy my own liquid wherever I please. I dont need anything fancy, just something that will get me off this damned Epen and free me to shop around for liquids.

The only real demand (apart from affordability) is that the device should have good battery life. I cant stand running out in the middle of the day (currently have two Epens!). Producing massive clouds isnt super important to me...

There are so many products out there, I feel like its a minefield, so thought I ask the experts for help!

Any help you guys and girls can provide is greatly appreciated!

David

New York (no, not the city)
I'll just throw this out to get the ball rolling .
The Kanger Toptank Mini kit (or whatever their latest Subtank-style is) is very common, popular and accessible. The higher-ohm coils, like 1.5-1.8, would serve well for mouth-to-lung vaping, and not burn through juice and battery power. Once you get used to it you can get a rebuildable deck and make your own custom coils, if you choose.

Thanks Belhade,

So Ive had a look at that, and it looks grand, nice and affordable and decent reviews. I also been recommended the Aspire Nautilus X, which is similarly priced with an option to add 5 extra 1.5 ohm coils for £9.99. How many coils could I expect to use if averaging 4.5ml of liquid a day?

Also, what is the correct terminology for the bottom/ battery part of the system rather than the tank itself (sorry for being such a noob :-( )?

OK, so Ive stopped being a lazy noob and done some research.

I want good battery life so Im going to want a box/ mod/ box mod with a battery of 2200-3000mah

I dont know how many watts (W) I should be going for. They seem to go from 40W and up...

I want to try and buy a mod without a tank, as Im gonna buy a tank separately as recommended on here

Coils are easy to change out, and are changed every 1-2 weeks or as needed

I currently use a Vype Epen and get through 4-4.5ml of liquid a day, producing fairly modest clouds, so being able to make really big clouds isnt a concern- based on this what mod would be recommended?

I dont need to be able to adjust settings that much, honestly I just want a reasonable amount of vapour and good battery life

Finally, do all mods have pretty much a universal fitment, ie. do all tanks fit onto all mods, and do all coils fit into all tanks?

You'll need to look for 510 for the mod and the tank. Generally speaking, most of them do now. And no, you need to get the coils made for that tank. Some coils will fit in several different style tanks. Just make sure you get the ones you need. Also...subohming is a big thing and many tanks' premade coils come with very low ohms. You may not like this.

Something you may want to look into is a pod system instead of buying everything separately. People seem to like the Penguin very much and I think the battery is 4000mah? and holds 8.5ml of juice. Not very pricey either. There is a forum here and many of the brands are reviewed there.

Everyone has slightly different opinions of what is best. I might as well throw in mine.

Big questions:
1: do you want to sub ohm or at least retain the ability to sub ohm? This basically means do you want to emit gigantic clouds of smoke or not. Some do, some don't.

Do you want a multi battery or single battery mod? Notice I am leaving out built-in batteries as an option. They all use micro usb2 as a charge point, and micro usb2 is flawed. Get a charger and swap your batteries. It will likely quadruple the life of your mod.
Multi battery is larger and heavier but works better for sub ohm. A single battery mech or VV mod will still sub ohm just fine, but you may need to carry extra batteries to swap out.

Are you interested in building coils or do you want to stick with a cartridge?
Building coils is vastly cheaper and more flexible in the long run, but requires more time and a small amount of tools. It tends to make vaping into more of a hobby.

Things to remember:

The more complicated a device is the more likely a clone is going to suck. Conversely a lot of the best clones are simple rdas that are nothing but a cup and a few screws.

EJuice makes a fine paint stripper. I have never ever had a painted mod or tank of any kind that didn't start peeling. Anodized aluminum is not paint though.

Plastic reacts poorly to heat and often cracks when dropped. Also ejuice makes things slippery.

I wouldn't necessarily get a subohm setup as a first box setup, that's going to be higher wattages, lower resistance and increased juice consumption. The nautilus line of tanks is a very popular line of tanks that will allow you to ease in with lower vapor volume, decreased juice consumption and, often, better battery life. Your mod, or battery, is going to come down to personal preference for hand feel and battery type, amount (internal v external, single 18650 v duel or more). Definitely go for a regulated mod and not a mech, mechs are not beginners devices. If you are in Edinburgh may I recommend to you the Jac Vapour Series B DNA 75. There's also a companion tank for it but that's not something I looked into as I'm not ordering a device that uses replacement coils I have to order from overseas but it may be worth it to check out for you. It does take an external 18650 but also has USB charging capabilities. Investing in an external battery charger and having extra batteries means you'll never be caught short with a dead battery, just make sure to read up on the proper handling of 18650s. Anyway, best wishes in your stepping up.

I use the NaughtyX to mimic cigarettes and I enjoy it quite a bit with the 1.8 Ohm atomizers. I bought the extender kit that brings its capacity up to 4 mls, but I'll guess that isn't allowed for you because you mentioned £ as your currency? Do you have to have stuff that is TPD compliant?

This might do you well for a simple device that doesn't allow you to control Wattage"

Innokin Smart Box iSub V Starter Kit

The Innokin SmartBox Starter Kit features the ultra compact SmartBox and iSub V tank in one starter kit. The SmartBox is designed with automatic intelligent wattage control for a great vaping experience every time. Attach your favorite direct to lung (DL) or mouth to lung (MTL) coil and the SmartBox will automatically detect the resistance and set the perfect wattage to deliver an amazing vaping experience. The SmartBox features a simple and easy one button design which is perfect for beginners or vapers on the go.

Replacement Coil-Atomizer Head for Innokin iSub Tank

Kanthal must be used in Power (Wattage) Mode:

  • 0.2 ohm - (Designed for 20 - 50W)
  • 0.5 ohm - (Designed for 20 - 35W)
  • 1.2 ohm - (Designed for 8 - 16W)
  • 2.0 ohm - (Designed for 10 - 16W)
  • KAL BVC - 0.5 ohm - (Designed for 30 - 60W)
  • KAL BVC - 2.0 ohm - (Designed for 10 - 25W)
  • Clapton - 0.5 ohm - (Designed for 30 - 70W)
You don't control the Wattage. It is determined by the atomizer that you use and the battery state (I'm assuming). If you throw a NaughtyX tank on there with 1.8 Ohm atomizers you should be getting 10-16 Watts. Which is actually pretty good for a NaughtyX. That's doable.

Okay ex-noob, that's great :) I kid :) I'm still a noob in many areas myself. :)

If you're going to buy a seperate tank and mod, I'd suggest the Nautilus 2 tank for MTL, it's really the best vape I've experienced (and I used older tanks dual use for a long time...) It has the best vape for the money, in my opinion. You can also use adjustable coils from 1.8 (I'd start with that one) all the way to 0.7, to me this tank offers you the option to TRY very low key sub-ohm to see if you like it (I like the 0.7 coil a lot surprisingly more than I thought I would and I still DL it, with airholes slightly closed off and lower watts. It's just a cleaner vape, though I do like the 1.8 coil as well. If you were going with cigalikes, this will give you a tight enough draw to more effectively mimic those devices, (though you can try other options with the different coils.) I wouldn't jump right to a sub-ohm device from cartridges, and if you do make sure to LOWER your watts as much as you can AND your nicotine as you will still be blowing through more juice. I'm thinking this might be your best expansion/play around deal.

I have two box mods and I got them for the flexibility of being able to build in an RTDA, for higher watt power. I had the IPV-5 which was a workhorse as far as durability, I dropped that thing countless times. It does have TC and other features, but I retired it once I finally broke down and got the Tesla Steampunk Nano 120. The build on that thing is quality, and I found it to be a much smoother vape, and for some reason, I had to turn down all my watts, as it's so efficient. It's also pretty-- finding a tank to match is... Well, I think my red nautilus looks fine on my copper (rose-gold) tank, but it's not exactly the most thoroughly gorgeous match, that's for sure. But, that setup vapes like a dream, and if you get around to getting a build tank at some point, you will have more beautific options. That said, there's no reason to spend that amount on a mod right now unless you are dying to. I'm sure more folks will come along with more suggestions :) Good luck and congrats for switching from Big Tobacco cigalikes, that's the best thing you can do for vaping, and your own pocketbook, for sure. :)

Congrats on your vaping success thus far! :)

If you want to enter RTA vaping cheaply, consider the Eleaf Pico 75W mod. Buy just the mod, not the full kit that comes with a Lemo or Melo atomizer. You can find the Pico on sale in the U.S. for around $25 and under in the US.

The Pico will go from 1W to 75W and will also let you try rebuildables from the MTL range to the cloud maker range.

If you like something that gives you and exhale that's similar to a cigarette, try a Kayfun Lite Plus V2, the Squape R, or a Nautlilus. The Kayfun and Squape R are MTL tanks that are rebuildable. The Nautilus uses pre-made coils that screw in.

All three will give you good mouth to lung vapes and good flavor with easy builds and maintenance.
