OK..I decided to take the leap and make my own e-liquid, so I got the following:

- A 10 ml bottle of Flavor Art's RY4 Flavor.
- VG (Pharmaceutical Grade)
- PG (Pharmaceutical Grade)
- Liquid Nicotine (99% from Zenith, but cut 1:1 VG, so it's a 49.5%).

I will start with a 5 ml project and see how it works, but I have a question: Most of the readings I did recommended a 15%-20% flavor concentration. However one thread on ECF (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-flavour-art-single-flavor-percentages-4.html) suggested to use 3-5%. So I am at a bit of a loss here. I understand that it's safer to start with a low concentration and then move up if it doesn't taste that good, but if I start with a high concentration it might be difficult to cure the situation.

I am planning to end up with a 12 mg nicotine concentration in a 50% PG/50% VG liquid, so assuming a 4% RY4 flavor concentration the ejuice me up calculator gave me the following results (all in drops):

24 drops of the base liquid
48 drops of PG
24 Drops of VG
4 drops of RY4 Flavor

Assuming a 20% flavor concentration the results are:

24 drops of the base liquid
40 drops of PG
16 Drops of VG
20 drops of RY4 Flavor

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That would likely be 99 or 100 mg/ml, not percent. 100 mg/ml is equivalent to 10%, and no DIY-er without a professional lab and the knowledge to use it should be working with anything stronger.

[edit]****That specific page does not specify a concentration, and describes it as "pure nicotine", and they also do sell 200 mg/ml (20%) base in the gallon jugs for much less than a quart of the 99%, so maybe it is that strong. My reading here has indicated that this forum actually prohibits people from discussing sources at that concentration, so if this thread gets closed and deleted, don't be surprised.

If you do go that route, you do so at considerable risk. If it is that pure, a fume hood, proper protective equipment, and experience with hazardous chemicals are required. Your calculations and measurements must be impeccable. Discussions here generally use 100 mg/ml (10%) as the maximum safe concentration for home users.

Please read the "sticky" messages at the top of the first DIY subforum page. That information has been collected by people with lots of knowledge and experience to try to help us make juice safely.

OK, assuming you have actually purchased 99% nicotine (not recommended, strongly discouraged) and already diluted in half to 49.5%, using the proportions in your first recipe, your final nicotine concentration is almost 120 mg/L (12%), which would be very dangerous, maybe fatal , to use. Start with 100 mg/ml (10%) max concentration and start diluting from there if you want to be safe and/or participate in DIY discussions here (forum rule, not mine).

If you know people that use this vendor, I sure hope they know what they are doing.

[edit] It seems like your recipe assumes you are starting with 100 mg/ml (10%) nicotine base, cutting it in half, and going from there. If you use anything near full strength nicotine, your product is 10 times stronger than you expect. I hope you don't vape that and get sick. Please reply.

Thank you for your message. I didn't vape it and I will definitely not even touch it until I get further information from the vendor. Thank you for your concern. I didn't know that selling this to individuals was even legal.

Please be sure you know EXACTLY what strength nicotine you're starting out with. The strongest concentration people here work with and discuss is 100 mg which is then diluted way down before vaping.

Sure..will call the vendor straight away and ask for the paperwork of the liquid he got.

Don't bother. The melting point of nicotine is -79 C (solid at room temp) as listed on their webpage but they're selling 99% as a liquid? It doesn't add up. And now you don't know what's really inside the bottle since it's not what is advertised. Read the forum and find a reputable vendor for DIY nic @ 100 mg/mL or less.

Assuming one considers room temperature to be 26 C (79 F) in order for that substance to be solid at room temperature it would need a melting point above 26. In order to make nicotine a solid you would have to cool it to below -79C.

The site (boletus, you may want to remove the link from your quote) listed is Chinese but seem to be geared towards Americans. If so, American nicotine seller's terminology usually indicates purity is an indication of how much of the product might be impurities, not the strength of nicotine. Nothing that site puts up indicates nicotine strength so it is possible they are claiming 9999 mg/ml.

Anything part of vaping that goes into my body, I order from inside the US because I know the Chinese aren't reliable for consumables.

Link removed. Don't know if they are legit or not, but they advertise gallon jugs of 200 mg/ml nicotine base for much less that a quart of their "pure nicotine."

I don't know if it is legal in the US, but I'm sure there are some places it is. And this is the internet after all, and people use it to do all kinds of stuff.

I'm just glad you got the message in time to investigate.
