I bought a vape back in December and have had it with me religiously since then. I can't seem to quit smoking. I like the flavors of the juice I've bought (I have about 25 bottles now). I just can't seem to kick the habit of smoking. I feel like the vape doesn't really do much for me. I've bought all 12 mg bottles although it's just not the same. I went all day yesterday without a cigarette and was incredibly irritated with life and caved this afternoon and bought another pack. I've managed to cut back to 3 or 4 a day but I find after I go outside for a cigarette I come inside and puff on the vape. What am I doing wrong any suggestions?

I smoked full-flavor menthol cigarettes and started at 24 mg/ml e-liquid.

As Harlen suggested, you may want to up your nicotine, and possibly explore WTAs (whole tobacco alkaloids). As I have never used them, I cannot point you to a vendor, but there are several reputable manufacturers that make e-liquid with WTAs.

I agree with Harlen... You just might need to bump your nic level a bit. I started out at 24mg with a couple 36mg around for support when the 24 wasn't even cutting it.
You may be a little hard on yourself though, if you need a smoke once in a while, go have a smoke... not a big deal really.
As you find your right combo of juice flavor and nic level, it gets much easier as your body adjusts to vaping.
You may also want to check out http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/642156-wta-refill-liquids.html#post15025696 and decide if it might be something you could benefit from or stay away from. The stuff worked wonders for me.
Keep your head up and don't sweat it!

mmmadill, I agree with Harlen. In order to avoid jonesing and wanting to smoke ciggies you need to up the nicotine content of your juice.
While 36 mg seems a bit much, 24 mg is more or less what you'd get from a Marley.

Resist the urge to fire up a ciggie all together or you'll never get off them.
If you want to get off nicotine altogether you can slowly decrease the nicotine content of your juice until you get to 0.
But trying to go from ciggies to what you're vaping will only give you jitters and desire to go buy a pack of smokes.
Also, disassociate from EVERYTHING you're used to doing while smoking ciggies.
Half the battle is psychological.
Break a leg.

I also agree, you may need a higher nic content in the juice you vape. See this post in the Library, Nicotine Strengths In Refill Liquid for info.

further reason for editing: I'm a slow typer, and there was only one reply in this thread when I started.. There's probably more replies now too!

Thank you for the suggestions. I will grab a bottle of my favorite in higher nicotine content.
Are cigarettes what you call analogs?
Also would it have anything to do with the device I'm using? I currently have an eleaf 20w istick with a nautilus mini. I was thinking about buying a hana modz (whatever they are called - battery). Still new on all the lingo. Would that make a difference? ( I just really like the purple one)
with a 40w hana modz what tank would be recommended.

hey what helped me might help you, I was using cigalikes and that product (I used 3 - logic disposables, v2cigs, blu ecigs) and their juices did nothing, 2 years later I decide to try ecigs again after a checkup with my dr and seeing a cancerous spot.. :|

anyways I decided to say bye to those cigalikes and try a tank pen style (halo tritons) and tada, worked, mainly because of the options you can use as far as the ecig itself and the juices, then I decided to try a boxmod and finally a mech mod, now i was very precautious to using any of these as I was afraid of the technology like building my own coils etc but I love it, I find learning about voltage, watts, coils, wires, diy juice receipes, the mods itself like whats better than stainless steel and copper etc. was interesting and kept me going

maybe you need to try a different style of ecig and/or juice

you never did specify in your post, I did spent $100s on different brands of juices until now I feel happy with my vendors of choice though I do buy a new brand here and there to see what else is out there, yes it can be costly but is it more expensive than your life? (just saw you did post again and listed your equipment, this thread is moving fast lol)

edit: p.s. I started with 6 mg of nic even though I was smoking light cigs which should be 12 mg, but it was ok for me as I chain vaped and still do unless I'm at work, it took a full week until I went from smoking half a pack while vaping to 0 cigs, everyone is different, you need to find the motivation, the wanting to really quit inside you, the will power (same thing) and an interest, maybe research mech mods like I did and get into building, I find it really fun

    good luck

Is there a technique to va ping? Like with smoking I noticed I inhale into my mouth then into my lungs, if I try doing that with the vape it makes me cough. With the vape I breathe straight to my lungs until I feel "full". Should I be holding it in at all?

You should always vape into your mouth first, and hold it in your mouth/throat/nose for a while before inhaling, or instead of inhaling; your lungs can't absorb the nicotine in vapor too well, the vapor molecules are too large; they absorb best in the mouth/throat/nose. The coughing is just because it's different from tobacco, AND it doesn't have the topical anesthetics that Big Tobacco puts into cigarettes so they don't irritate. You just have to get used to it; it's not the same as smoking.

Definitely get a higher nic strength; the device is less important right now while you're still trying to figure out the way to make it work for you, but more than one device would be a great idea, because hardware is fallible, and often seems to fail just when you most need it.

It took me about a month of gradually increasing vaping while gradually decreasing smoking; I kept a tally of how many I smoked each day, and the next day, tried to go lower, or at least, not higher. Surprised you can even still tolerate the taste of a real cigarette if you're only smoking 3-4 a day; once I got to less than 5, they tasted so foul to me I couldn't figure out why i was still bothering with them. The main and most important factor in quitting is, do YOU really WANT to quit? Or is it because someone else wants you to, or you think it would be a good idea, or you want to save money on your insurance...? Without a sincere strong desire of YOUR OWN to quit, it's going to be very difficult, if not impossible; your brain will constantly keep trying to convince you to smoke, to give it what it needs, and without that true strong desire, you'll find a reason to go along with the brain's urging -- the brain is like a 2 yr old hollering GIMME GIMME GIMME!!! -- it takes a MIND to overcome that.

WTA is a godsend, but not everyone needs it, and not everyone benefits from it, and it's also very expensive; try for a while longer without it, and see how it goes. Not everyone flips a switch in their brain with their first or 100th hit on an e-cig; for a lot of us, it was a gradual process.

    Hang in there!!! :thumb:

I would get 2 of those same flavors in 24mg and try them at 24 for 2-3 days. The reason I say is that I got 36 and I KNEW that vaping would work. I got confidence.

Do the 24. If 24 is about right, get some more of the flavors you have in 36 and mix the 36 and 12 together to make 24.

If the 24 is to strong then mix the 24 with the 12 and get 18mg. Remember to get same size bottles.

    Hope helps

I am so sorry you are having a hard time. I did both for a good while and slowly decreased my cigarettes. When I got down to 1 or 2 a day, they started tasting nasty to me. Sort of tricked my mind into lovin' the vape I think. Maybe that is something you could try. I would definitely look into a higher nic to help stop the cravings. Just please keep giving it a try. I just know you can do it. I really look forward to reading about your successful vaping. Good luck to you.

Thank you for all the good advise. I tried tonight changing the way I inhale... mouth to lung and I feel like it makes a difference. I'm hoping I'll just be one of those people who wakes up and is like eww cigarettes taste nasty! I've been smoking for 15 years now, time to make a serious change.

For some people, it's very sudden, as you say; lots of folks round here say they never smoked again after getting their first e-cig. But for the majority of us, it takes a little longer; anywhere from maybe a week to a month, and for some, from several months to several years, before they were really done with smoking.

For me, as I said, it took about a month of gradually increasing vaping while I gradually decreased smoking -- basically, trying to substitute vaping for smoking for as many cigarettes as I could; sometimes, needing to go smoke, but telling myself, well I'll just vape for now, and in a while if I still really want a cigarette, I'll go have one; negotiating yourself out of smoking, when you have a good substitute like vaping, isn't too hard. But towards the end, it seemed like that 2-yr-old in my brain was so antsy about smoking, it was driving me crazy; when I finally said that's it, no more, smoking is finished, the 2-yr-old finally shut up and gave me some peace -- but if there is still even the slightest reservation in your MIND about smoking, then your BRAIN will use that slight reservation as a jumping-off point, to try and get what it needs. On the other hand, pressure is counterproductive; if you just can't negotiate yourself out of the cigarette, then go have it -- ENJOY it! -- it's easier to relax with the negotiation if there is no pressure.

The tallying up of cigarettes smoked, letting you compete with the previous day's total, is a very effective technique -- it seems like a silly mind game, and it is, but silly mind games are sometimes what is necessary to deal with a 2-yr-old. Always bear in mind, that having "just one," just serves to perpetuate the addiction, and the longer you perpetuate the addiction, the harder it is to break. My ex was a huge pain about my smoking, but he did say one really valuable thing, about breaking any addiction: "If not now... WHEN?" When asking myself that, for a while, the answer was 'well, not today.' Until I finally got sick of the 2-yr-old in my brain yammering at me constantly, and just said "enough."

I also started at about 24 nick level, and quit right off the bat, though took some doing, mainly the habit of lighting up ( I actually pulled my lighter out of pocket quite often). If you are using higher voltage/watt rigs, you will get a lot more of the nic I feel. Vaping is different then actual smoking, as in vaping, the nic is absorbed more in mouth, nose membranes compared to smoking.

Everybody here has great advice. The only thing that I would add is that your whole vaping experience needs to be satisfying, not only from the nicotine perspective, but the "whole" experience- the amount of vapor, the throat hit, the flavors, etc.

With regard to flavor, I think a lot of us have had a similar progression. When I first walked into a vape shop, I asked specifically about tobacco flavors, thinking if I found something close, that would act as a "replacement" to analogs. I eventually found that while there are some great tobacco juices, nothing replaces an analog. Once I figured this out, it opened up a TON of possibilities and made my overall experience MUCH better.

    Best of luck to you!!

    Welcome to the boards.

Congratulation on reducing your smoking and the desire to quit.

I started vaping the end of November, pack a day smoker for 30 years. I was started at 18mg and I reduced my smoking to about 5 a day. I increased to 24mg and the next day had my last cigarette. It took me about six weeks.

Try increasing you nig level. 24mg is readily available. I have not seen anything higher that that this side of the border.

Keep at it and count the ones you haven't smoked
