Ok, I think I have my starter kit together...

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

My takes on things thus far:

  1. I got over wanting something cigarette-sized pretty quick. The 5 row charger helped, and I'll keep the PCC case and 50 setup for when I go out to bars and such, but other than that they'll probably collect dust.
  2. I'm not really in to dripping. I like convenience and the ability to leave the house without switching to my "other setup" all the time.
  3. I thought I had what I wanted with cartomizers, and may still end there but:
    1. They're kind of a pain to fill. I know there are 100's of different ways to do it, but that's a result of it being a pain to 100's of other people. :) Dripping on the back takes a while to fill and almost always results in some spillage.
    2. There's no way to tell how much is left. I end up filling a bunch, but then every time I leave the house I only trust the full ones, so I end up with a bunch of these half-full ones laying all over the house.
    3. I find that they're inconsistent. A lot of people say they fill them over and over forever, but (mostly BOGE 3ohm) seem to run out of muster pretty quick. I'm using mostly if not all PG in them, but it's almost as if the pads have gotten sticky and don't absorb as well.
  4. So far, the ego tank systems are working out pretty well for me. You can see the liquid, easy to refill, and lots of vapor.

I've been looking at a tank setup, which I think will be quite convenient if I can ever decide on a daily juice (tons of threads on that, but trial and error seems to be the key there). I don't really want to trial and error on much more in the equipment dep't for a while, though. At this point, I'm soliciting advice. I've read a bunch of posts on changing voltage/resistance combos and such, but not really sure where to start on that.

So, all that being said, what would someone's "first mod" or whatever you want to call it be? As shown above, I've tried the laundry list of normal gear, and the 900mah ego with type A tank has been the best I've come up with.

Thoughts?

I've pretty much been where you are. I hate things that take a lot of fuss to use. Which is why I started with an ego-t type B as well. If your looking into something that is an upgrade or "mod" with the same idea than bottom feeders might be a very good alternative.

There are cheap models like the boge revolution v2.1 or vmod. Then you move into more of the quality types such as the REO. Which I have both the Grand and the mini. If you would like to learn more than here's the subforum:

Reos Mods

Also, where you can buy them (there's actually some on there right now. They're mostly sold out all the time):
reosmods.com

The idea behind this is that you can carry anywhere from 3-6 ml of juice around with you and a battery that can last you all day long, such as an 18650 used in the grand. You don't need to carry around anything else. Basically, a VERY convenient mod that will last you a lifetime. Since it's made of aircraft aluminum.

There are also a LOT of others but, the REO worked for me. You can do a search on bottom feeders to see which one you like.

First mod?...a variable voltage box mod like the Big Brother from boxmods.net. Ken makes some really sweet box mods. The BB is the size of a 2xAA box. I'm a gal and can wrap my hand completely around it. Just dial in your juices with a regular resistance carto and go to town. After trying variable voltage, you'll give up all your other batteries. Now park a vaporescence liquinator tank on top and you'll vape yourself silly.

Big Brother Vari-Cool

Vape-O-Matic Liquinator 3mL - These take a slotted cartomizer which you can do yourself with a dremel. Simple and easy. Every hit off one of these is like a hit off a fresh newly filled carto. You won't go wrong with one.

I'm not sure bc I've never owned a mod, but from all the reading a lot of people like the Reo mods... I find them a little too expensive for myself at this stage, but maybe in the future... who knows... :2cool:

You can always start off with the cheaper bottom feeders like the vmod (60-70) or an Old goat (30-40 bucks) to see if you like them first before taking the plunge:

Old Goat Mods

Anyways, if you think about it then 140-50 bucks is about as much as you would've paid when you were smoking or more. Also, Reo's were built to last. Which would equal out in a few months. That's my take on it.

If the best you've come up with so far is the eGo tank system type-A, I'd recommend you move over to type-B. Admittedly I'm only 7 weeks into vaping, but the type-B setup really is perfect for me. As you say the tanks are just a win all round, but the type-B holds twice the amount, is more comfortably-sized to draw, the attys stay cooler when chain-vaping, and depending on your level of usage, 1 tank lasts me about 1 day (with my 900mAh lasting me 31 hours). So I change battery in the morning, fresh-fill my tank, and I'm done 'messing around' for the whole day. I had to go back to a type A tank recently when I thought I'd blown my last type-B (which I then revived thanks to ecf a few hours later). I absolutely hated type-A for those few hours. Worse draw, hotter unit, and the tiny size made me feel like I was using a toy. So... I can't recommend the type-B enough. Oh, and I use SR's not LR's, and the SR tube atty feels less resistance than the SR cone atty.

Thanks for the links... I understand it's not expensive in terms of cost efficiency... I just don't have the capital atm... but I've bookmarked your links for future reference :2cool:

No problem and I totally understand. Just take your time and since you already quit cigs. That's already is going to save some money in the long run. Anyways, glad I could help.

Haha, yeah, I posit that all of the people with signature banners listing how much money they're saving are full of it. :p There is more of a hobbyist angle to this than I expected. Presumably at some point I'll have more than a couple of weeks where I don't see something I just gotta have, and honestly saving money wasn't my primary motivator for switching over.

I agree on the "buy cheap, buy twice" principal, though. Might as well go for the better ones if, in fact, the more expensive ones demonstrably are so. Thanks for the tips. I have more reading to do. :)

Maybe you should try the Reo Grand. You can vape at 3.7, 4.8, or 6v with different batteries, 6ml of fluid, and u can use cartos with it too. This is my first mod; Ive had it a few weeks now and couldn't be happier. With a 1600 maH battery and 6 ml bottle of fluid its really hassle free. Just squeeze the bottle to refill and keep going. I got mine used from the classifieds .

I also love the reo's. There has been a lot of reo's for sale lately on the classifieds for around $125.

I've also recently fallen in love with map tanks. If you score any 18650 size mod, you could get the 4.8v batteries and 3ohm ce'2s, and it's simply delicious!

If you have a functional setup right now, I wouldn't suggest getting a half-asses cheap mod. Just do some research, save for a few more weeks and get the one you really like!

If you want a very reasonabile priced and a well built box, 3.7v, 5v, or vv, go here,
Quality 3.7v Box Mods from $19 5v Box Mods from $28
No affiliation, other than being a very satisified customer, with all three of the above. Steve is always available and very responsive to pm's, and thru his thread.
Or you can go here, Cigarman sells them under his label.
Welcome to SmokTek - The Better Smoking Alternative
Also a thread here:
DAILY DEALS are at SmokTek.com! - Boge, Smoktech Cartos on Sale!

You won't go wrong dealing with either of these two vendors.
Kinda wish I'd done this before I spent over a $100 on my first mod. There is a cool factor over the mods above, but that's about it. These will get you going in the mod world very reasonably.
Again no affiliation, just a customer.
