Hi community,

My name's Thomas Macnaughtan, I'm 63 yo, I'm living in Auckland, New Zealand, and I'm an addicted, ex-chain smoker of brand Pall-Mall red.
I'm saying ex because since September 20, 2016, from ca 8.30pm I didn't smoke ANY cigarette at all.
Prior to that, I was introduced by my friend to the VAPO system ENDURA Endura T18.
It was by a pure chance: I visited my friend, and I noticed his new VAPO device being charged from a USB port on his laptop.
He let me try few poofs from his ENDURA Endura T18...., and I immediately new, that this is it!
I once stopped smoking cold turkey back in 1982 for 18 months, but I fell back into smoking again.
I tried stopping again in 1995, and after 6 months I was back to square one.
Apart of those 2 years combined non smoking, I was a chain smoker for good 46 years. I started at age 15.
I'm talking about the 1968 when smoking was all over the world, and considered normal. In my birth country, Poland
smoke was everywhere. A teacher at a primary school was smoking in a class room, only oppened a window,
ash trys where placed even in doctors waiting rooms, every public building, office was considered as a smoking-welcome area.
Well, to cut the long story short, I become a chain smoker whithin couple of days from my first smoke.
Today, I can hardly believe, that I'm not smoking my beloved Pall-Malls for 18 days.
New Zealand has the most expensive cigarettes in the world, I think. NZ$ 40.00 (forty) for a pack of Pall-Mall forties-red. Yes, it's 1 dollar per cigarette! And this is the cheapest option, Pall-Mall 20 Long cost at the moment NZ$ 21.90.
For me it's a true miracle, I gave up beleaving, that I will ever be able to stand next to a cigarette smoking guy, and
not having a horrific need for a cigi myself.
If I could, I would nominate those who invented, and developped VAPO systems for a Nobel Prize, and there's a
mountain of reasons for it.
That's it for an intro, hope to hear from you guys sometimes.
18 days, and counting...., yay!!!!

Cigarettes aren't as expensive here but I certainly haven't saved any money... yet. Lol. There's just so many shiny things I want and DIY juice flavors to buy! I smell better and my lungs feel better, and that's worth it to me. Welcome! This forum has been a great help to me and I know I'll never go back to smoking (PAD habit for 25 years or so).

Welcome to the forums!

It only gets better from here. I am a former smoker of 20 years, being age 46, I remember those times as well. I remember the vending machines you put quarters in and pulled the knob to dispense a cigarette. The little gold foil ash trays at McDonalds, the ashtrays with bean bag bottoms, etc... it was definately a different time than now.

Me, I started when I was 19-20... and smoked since. Been off cigarettes for a few years now, and been vaping ever since. The inventor, Gilbert, originally was a US inventor who came up with the idea back in 1963. But his patent ran out, and his devices weren't very practical... back then, the battery life wasn't good enough. Hon Lik came out with the first modern ecigarette, and it was all due to the power behind lithium ion batteries that made them really useable. His electronic cigarette used Piezo electric to atomize... although it didn't really catch on, it did bring interest in bringing back the idea of an electronic cigarette. I don't know which ecig had the first heated coil, but it's what all ecigarettes are based on today.

Your setup seems to be a good starter setup. It's a complete unit that I believe is a good starting point. You could take it to the hobby level, or you can continue to use the starter setup... either way, vaping is MUCH healthier than smoking. You'll start to see a difference in a month or so.. It still takes some effort, but not near as much as what you would think. three months from now, you'll see a HUGE difference.

If you have ANY questions about what you're going through, or any concern at all, no matter how small, feel free to ask. I always say the worst question is the one that's not asked.... And don't worry about if it seems trivial, some time those are the most talked about.

Thanks Neal,
it seems to me, that I'm going to be quite happy with that setup I'm on.
The Endura T18 is doing its job pretty good for me.
I'm surprised, that vapping is not quite working on some folks who want to quit, like me.
My friend, who gave me the intro to vapping is still smoking his Marlborough, and vapping at the same time.
I consider myself as one of the worst addiction cases, and if vapping let me quit smoking so easily, thought it'll work for anyone too.
Well it's not so apparently.
My addiction is so bad, that I was using what I called my dirty box.
It's a plastic box, where I used to collect the cigarettes butts for times when I couldn't afford a pack of cigs.
Hell of a humiliation. Well, on September 20 I put my two unoppened
packs of cigs, that I was having as a stock pile, lighter, and a mouth piece for butts smoking into that dirty box, wrapped it with an elastic,
and will keep it as a souvenir, that will remained me on my hellish times.
I even tested my resilience to smoking by vapping at the smoking areas at clubs, etc. It's wonderful, other peopl smoking doesn't move me at all.
Just over 2 weeks ago it was thing of impossibility, it would drive me
nuts watching, and smelling someone's smoking, and not having a smoke myself.

Yea, I remember having to pick through the ashtray for something to get me by until I could get another pack...... worst was when I had to go to the car and pick a few butts off of those in the middle of summer.. those things were so dry and nasty..but I still did it. I remember when I allowed myself to smoke indoors, and by the computer. Being a computer technician, I would do the repairs on my own computer. The tar would build up on the heat sink, and pickup every piece of dust in the air. I would have to take the heat sink off, wash with soapy water, and scrub the heat sink until it was clean... you can't do that with the motherboard, so the whole motherboard was sticky... as well as the keyboard. What brought a shock to me, was when a whole bunch of fast food computers started coming back for repairs because they were all starting to fail. The grease from the fryers would do the same thing as what was happening to my computer. sheesh.. and we inhaled that stuff. I vape by my computer.. and there's no such problem.

As I said before, it will still take some effort to quit.. it's not a %100 solution. The three biggest hurdles with a smoker, is 1) the size... they're much bigger to hold than a traditional cigarette, 2) the taste, there is no %100 replacement for traditional tobacco smoke.. all vaping juices are naturally sweeter. 3) the consistency is thicker, and will cause most smokers to cough because vapor is quite a bit denser. Most smokers come up with some reason not to truely give them a try... I did at first as well. I remember thinking it was just a fad. I tried a cigalike because it was the closest thing to a cigarette I could find... and it wasn't strong enough to help me quit, but it did drastically reduce my smoking and opened my eyes to the fact that they MAY help. My thriftyness is what got me into bigger vaporizers, and glad it did.

I know, I talk a bit, but I will tell you a few things I went through while quitting.. just in case you experience it yourself...

First, my mouth gets dry... drink plenty of water... ejuice tends to absorb moisture just like it does the flavorings... I found if I don't, my nose gets unusually dry, especially in winter. Second, never leave your vape in your car when it's hot. You'll end up with a leaky tank and bad tasting juice after a while. :) third, my coughing got WORSE at first. I was clearing my throat a lot more than usual. After some quick google-fu, I found out that was just a symptom of quitting....my lungs were clearing. fourth, you'll have to deal with a lot of people ignorant to what vaping truely is. I don't say that in a bad way, but as an example, just tonight my manager saw me with my Epipe after work and said "those are more dangerous than cigarettes.. they have all sorts of chemicals in them that is more cancerous than cigarettes... they even have more nicotine.".... I informed him my mixture has four chemicals in them.. I make my own e-juice... Nicotine, Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerine, and flavoring... none of them cause cancer.... they still don't believe me since I'm not a doctor or scientist.... But it's something I go through quite often.

After a few months, any increased coughing or clearing of throat went away.... lungs don't heal overnight. My smell came back with a vengence at first.... While checking out at my store, I could smell the particle boards the register was made of.. walked outside and could smell the burger joint 1/2 mile away, along with the sweetness of the yogurt place... things started to taste stronger.. which sometimes was bad.. I disliked hot food, now, even peppered chicken seems spicy to me.. (I'm a wuss when it comes to hot spices) That normalizes after a while, but you'll end up better than when you smoked. Now, when I get around smokers, I smell the smoke on their clothes. I can still smell the smoke in my mother in law's car, and she quit smoking a few years ago as well. Even air fresheners don't hide it.

And lastly... get a backup system you like and keep it in good working order. You don't want your vape to go bad and not have something to fall back on.

Thanks Neal. I'm so glad, I don't drive to Auckland airport for butts at
smoking areas anymore. The airport staff must know me already by
sight..., well that's over now :)
In the first day of vapping I experienced some stomach sensations, and
also caughing. It stopped as quickly as it started, and I don't get any
other symptomes or signs of anything negative.
I already have a second device as a backup, as I also thought about
some disaster that might happen to my first vapper.
You work as a computer tech? Funny, I worked as a programmer, and a
tech since 1982 until 2007 when I lost my job for good.
I worked with IBM midrange machines systems 34, 36, 38 and AS400 at
the end. I learned PCs in 1995, and it gave me some additional work
until 2007.
I still remember the time pre-windows95. It was called windows 2 or 3,
and fitted on a dozen of 3.5'' diskettes.
I was contracting, and become jobless when company I was
contracting for got sold to Heinz the US canned food giant.
Everyone from GM to cleaning staff went on the street.
NZ is a microscopic place, at that time was about 4 million population.
Things like manufacturing are practically non existent here.
By the time I landed on the pavement I turned 54, so finding another
job was impossible. Though times come on me, and smoking was
increasingly more in the way.
Well, I'm 16 months from retirement now, and luckily NZ govt pays a
regulatory retirement benefit to old folks like me.
Vapping definitely is a bonus.
I didn't so far heard any negative comments on my vapping, actually
I got few complements, that I'm not smoking anymore.
I'm not sure if I'm an exception by being able to quit so rapidly, but
honestly it wasn't hard at all to my surprize. I feel like I'd smoke a
different brand of cigs really. Well everyone is different, and it would
be an error to try make a assumption on hand of a single case.

Thomas im happy for you , similar case here years and age of what i call stinkies now a days.
Been vapiing a little bit before joining forum in 2011 and never picked up a stinky since. Was
2PK a day marlb and do not miss them 1 bit.

The Mrs and i quit at same time.

If you ever get into doing it yourself called DIY on forum where as you make you own eliquid it is much cheaper although do not know regulations in your country on buying the supplies needed or if they are available.
There is a load of information here on forum on how its done if you choose that path.
But either way keep it up what you are doing it only gets easier much easier.

Anyways again happy for you. ; )

I never did work on mainframes. FIrst computer was a c=64 First IBM compatible computer was an Epson Equity III+(286/12) running DOS 3.0. It came with a SCSI 40 meg HD. Windows 3.11 came on seven 3 1/2" floppies, and I still preferred DOS. In college, I started to take computer science. When I learned that Computer science was just programming, and they just taught Pascal when everyone was learning C++, I decided to leave college all together and get a computer job loading computers for a video confrencing company. Went from there to a mom and pop place that sold video editing systems. I managed to get a+, net+ and MCSE/CCNA training, and during the last month of training, 9/11 happened, and it spelled the end of the .com businesses. Companies tightened their belts and used their Programmers for theot IT personel. IT went from having those certifications, to knowing Java and Oracle... I simply didn't have the right credentials and never managed an IT system... so.... I have been a baker for going on 10 years now. :)

Oddly, to bring all that to the Ecig front (this is an Ecig forum after all) The epson equity was the one that had the smoke damage.... everything got sticky. same with the mechanical keyboard, which I would pop off every key take off every spring on every key, and fully dissasemble the keyboard. Soak every part in hot dish soap and STILL had to scrub the keyboard to get the tar off. I had to remember where each key was... and when assembled, I tested to make sure the keys were in the right place. Since I've been vaping, there's no need to do that. Now my keyboard is naturally gunky with food residue my 9 year old leaves. :)

And, like others said, you might want to get into DIY to save some money. Many of the newer sub ohm tanks have an option where you can put your own coils in. $5 of organic cotton and $5 of Kanthal wire is enough to last you a year of coils if you change them out often.
