OK, I’m still somewhat new to this but trying to get a handle on the different ways to create vape and it seems there has been some evolution to the ways to create vape over the life of the ecig. After watching a few youtube videos and reading way too many forums I’ve came to the following history. Please let me know if I got this right.

1) First there was the atomizer and people would drip juice directly on this to create vape. Eventually Carts and box mods were created to make this process easier.

2) Next there were the cartos which allowed you to have your juice an your atomizer essentialy in the same place removing the need to drip constantly. tanks based on cartos came soon after as a way to keep your carto filled.

3) Then there were the clearomizers with wicks (both long and short). There are also the CE3 style clearomizers now (the Phoenix ones) that don’t appear to have a wick at all, so I’m not sure if they are actually be a new evolution or not.

Did I get this somewhat right?

The progression was much more involved than your little summary (or mine, for that matter). And dripping did not come first. Carts were first on small mini auto batteries first invented in China. Then better and larger manual batteries (the first being Trogs' Screwdriver from the UK). Then dripping and at about the same time cartomizers. And then a huge amount of modified batteries and circuitry to make those better batteries function better (5 volt, 6 volt, variable volt, variable watt, regulated, etc). And then CE2's, tanks, etc.

It started with (I believe) a company called Ruyan, that developed a cartridge based electronic cigarette with a 180mAH battery. At the time, e-liquid wasn't being sold widely, if at all. People pretty much bought cartridges over and over again. A little while later, eliquid was developed and sold. From then, people experimented with direct dripping and that led to drip tips and a play on PG/VG ratios. Ultimately soon after, cartomizers came about. Initially, they were terrible, but they've progressed. While all this was happening, the eGo and various APV's saw development and gained popularity. That carried on, then we came to clearomizers and dual coil cartomizers, eventually a dual coil atomizer, and then DCT's and other CE-based tanks such as the Vivi Nova or the Vision. While tanks came out, rebuildable atomizers started coming around too.

This is, to the best of my memory, a brief history on the PV. Correct me if I'm wrong with anything guys.

It was a 80 - 90 mAh battery on the first models. Eliquid was available in early 2009 if not sooner. The first big change was Trogs' Screwdriver modified PV and thus manual batteries. Then there was a rush of more modified battery models. Dripping/cartomizers, etc came after this.

You missed the entire "Cartridge Mods Era" which preceded dripping for the most part...
Cartridge Mods - Page 19

In the beginning there were cartridges, stuffed with polyfill that didn't wick well enough to suit most of us.
So we all started trying to find the holy grail of materials that could be used to replace the polyfill in our cartridges.

Dripping was a reaction to these same issues, and was invented by people tired of experimenting with different filler materials.

Also, towards the end of the "Cartridge Mods Era" the first fillerless modifications were being developed.

Good one, DC. I forgot all about the "blue foam" craze. (fish tank filter) I may still have some around here somewhere, lol.

Man the blue foam was fairly recent for me. I remember shopping for that 9 or 10 months ago. I've since graduated on to bigger and better things, but at the time the blue foam was WHERE ITS AT. I think techology is just rapidily accelerating and it seems more distant than my time machine would have me believe.

You're forgetting a lot. Don't forget the straw mod, the PTB (Pyramid Tea Bag) mod to name a couple others. Thank goodness that stuff was on it's way out when I started. I barely used cartridges at all. Not only did they feed inconsistently, they weeped juice everywhere.

You're right, I forgot those. I'm pretty sure I had already started dripping by the time they came on the scene and just didn't want to fool with it.

I went to a certain chain of pet stores, where the correct model number of blue foam had been listed. The poor lady in there kept trying to engage me in aquarium conversation, because she was very obviously into it, and I was not. They didn't have the exact model number of the filter, and I kept avoiding telling her why I wanted it. She kept trying to talk to me about it.

Now, I am more comfortable in public with vaping gear. I should go back...

So after reading this I'm imagining some old lady in a pet smart running and screaming "OMG HES DOING DRUGS" and you walk around the corner taking a big hero drag on your Darwin
