History question: What was the "first" mechanical mod?

Hoping to get some answers from the old timers here.

I started out with the Joye 510 with the old tank system but never really paid attention to anything mechanical back then...

How did they come about? What was considered the "first"?

They came about by modders getting around wiring issues basically. First? Not sure but I'd guess the GG around January 2009. Depending on how 'mechanical mod' is defined

I know the SB was around and known to be the shiznit back then but I don't know if it was first. Very good question.
