Mike...the type of work that you do...I think you could find anywhere in this country. Yes it pays well, but THAT kind of work pays well wherever you go...cuz' of the hazards you face going up that high. You must also factor in the cost of living there in Cali...ridiculously high! And as far as the e-cig thing...well, that may or may not be true...but I don't think it's going away ANY TIME SOON...it's just starting to heat up right now...besides, you always have your other skills and trade to fall back on right? I lived my entire life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin...I stressed over whether or not I was making the right decision to move here to Bumf...k Idaho and everyone told me I was crazy to throw everything away to come here. My sanity was at stake at that time...I couldn't deal with much more of the stress of city living, my job, etc etc. I thought, nothing ventured is nothing gained...and tossed all caution to the wind. I've NEVER regretted the move other than the loss of income, but I live differently now and don't need as much to survive on as I did then....so it all comes out in the wash. Just remember, you have to do what's right for YOU and YOUR family...not what everyone else wants you to do.

About the job- We need cloud walkers on the right coast too.
About the distance - if something happens to someone in your family, money isnt an option when buying a plane ticket to fly back. As far as day to day contact, there is skype for that.
The humidity is very different, but you will adjust.

I moved away for 4 years to try a new location, new people, new job. After those 4 years, I decided I didnt like where I was so I moved back to GA. Had I not made the move, I would have never known. Now we are contemplating moving to Florida in a few years. Who knows, we may stay there for a few years and come back. Doesnt matter. You only live once!

My ONLY suggestion that I have for you if you do move...make sure you're able to afford some kind of health insurance! LOL....seriously. That's the only thing I regret giving my job up for! Now I sit here with NO insurance and I'm almost 56 years old..an age where I might be in need of it sooner than later...

WOW! I pay $60/month for medical and dental. Im not in such a high risk job though. In my field, we typically lose our sanity first.

You will see a huge different in cost of living.

I visited Cali for 2 weeks twice and couldnt wait to get out of there. I couldn't even find a cheeseburger with grease in it. I gotta have my grease! Plus, everything costs sooo much.

I think California and Washington (Seattle area) are the two most expensive states to try to eke out a living in right now...well, maybe Florida too?

Cost of living in Florida is not very bad, unless you choose to live on the beach. Then the property taxes will eat you alive!

I live 45 miles from the beach. ~15 miles from the Alabama line in the boonies. Close enough to go and play w/out having to pay the cost of living there again...

I say go for it, no risk no reward and if you truly hate it out there or just ready for the change, being there will not make you happy until you go for it. Man you can make a living with the ecig, BBQ pits and lawn stuff here in Teaxs I know it. So I know you can up there as well. I hated leaving OKLAHOMA to take a risk and come to were the work is in Houston, but I did it, now life is good. I wish you the best and I think you will be fine. Trust yourself and what ability you have and go live the dream whatever that is for YOUR family.
