Thats what kept happening to me.. Oxidize the wick more.. Its shorting somewhere! Try getting closer to the center post as well. Shorten up the top lead.
I wish I could help you K-man. Is it just popping on it's own when it's heated too long?
And check your spacing between coils - it's all about the balance between inductive resistance and the natural resistance of the heating element (that's why they are coils) - small tweaks makes a HUGE difference.

(I work at a place that does "pulsed power" stuff using Marx generators at various huge voltages and powers; learned more about inductive resistance in the first few weeks than I had my entire life before starting here... 'course, with a 7-terrawatt machine, we abandon pulse forming coils and go straight to water resistors, but that's another story...)
How many wraps are you doing? Maybe your top wrap is to loose or tight. Are you getting dry hits? How much loose wire do you have between your wick and top post?
All I can say is THANK YOU ALL!!!! I appreciate every bit of your sincerity! Man, you all are awesome. As much as I appreciate it, I'll make ends meet. Always have, always will. When the goin gets though, the tough gets tougher. Just stinks because I just had to put tubes in my other daughter ears 6 months ago, but you know what, I'll be ok, and my kids will be as well. junebugg1999, if you are reading this here not knowing what to say and sitting there with a kleenex. (you know you are) I am a mom too. You must be worried sick about your little one. And to have to worry about how you will pay for something that is medically necessary must be some of the worst stress a parent can face. I am in Canada and do not have to worry bout the medical portion of raising a child. I just can't imagine how you must feel right now. ((((HUGS from the Zenfidels))))
