Hope you had a good trip Zen...it may sound weird but I legitamately feel safer knowing that your involved in our protection

Thanks... Bit I'm more involved with the protection of the individual warfighter... THEY are the ones who are involved in our protection... I'm all about keeping them equipped with the tools needed to get the job done.

ANNOUNCEMENT!!

Today at 2:38pm I became the proud owner of Zenesis Mini Hybrid APV #0017!! The evil mailman is not so evil (I temporarily take back all my rants about him) and I go my Mini a day ahead of my own estimate. For you Marchers...I really is worth the wait. Thanks Zen~ I love it and it is flawless. However I did have to grind my Ming to fit; but that gave me a chance to rouge it up to match my mini jewel. I must go Zenitate and vape my brothers and sisters:D. Picture will follow if I can tear myself away from vape production (I know it is very selfish and self serving but I cannot help myself):vapor:

Claiming the title of first zenesis owner in Alaska. Congrats!

I had no problem getting through TSA this morning with a Standard in my briefcase... The Office of Naval Research and the Pentagon were far less willing to let it through without an explanation.

You are in DC? Dang, could have met and picked up my standard :) Or take you to dinner for all the awesomeness you are creating. :)

Can links be posted over there?

I'm looking ahead to when someone asks why aren't my Trustfire or non-AW IMR batteries good enough? A link could be posted that directs them to zen~'s battery safety post #1309. That tends to be a common issue/question.

People already own non-AW IMR batteries and just don't understand why they aren't recommended. Zen's post explains it all perfectly. If links can be posted, that could be added OR, maybe just copy/paste his entire post? That might be even better?

Question: Why can't I just use the batteries I already own that are Non-AW IMR batteries?

Answer: (zen's post).

What do you think?
IMO you are being too doctrinaire. On at least 2 occasions, Zen~ posted positive statements about non-AW IMR's. In once case, it was about orange 1500 mah 18650's. In another case, it was about blue 800 mah 18350's. The latter were from COV, I forget where the former were from.

In the latter case, he said that they were not as good as AW's but were fine. In the former, not sure if he compared them to the AW's but he did say he had good experience with them. While he has been unambigious in recommending he AW's, it is not true that he has been bad-mouthing all non-AW IMR's. What he has bad-mouthed is the idea of putting protected ICR's near your face.

It appears to me that the important part is that they be IMR's. I think you and a couple other people are confusing the important part (IMR's) with the less important part (while AW's are favored, there is no reason to diss some of the others). While this is not intentional misinformation, it can boil down to the same thing if you convince people who have perfectly good IMR's to buy AW's they don't need. If I am wrong about this, I am confident Mike will correct me.

So while I was hanging out waiting for a plane home... The switch button was being redesigned. I stepped up the schedule on that because it's been an issue. I was in FaceTime chats on the iPhone with the machine shop, and the slop on the standard switch has been dealt with and the mini will benefit as well. I will sign off on the drawings on Monday and get them rolling. I decided that this cannot wait until the meeting I have with the shop 20 days from now.

When the switch buttons arrive I'll send them to out to everybody and you will need to send me back the old button. After you have installed the new one. I will be sending a pre addressed postage paid mailer for the return of the button.

I have had another case of a broken tank... This time from a tip-over accident... Things are looking bad for fused Quartz. I'm going to send everybody a polycarbonate tank to have on hand as a spare. It will take me a couple weeks to get the material in stock and have them all cut to size. The switches may be shipping at the same time.

It's funny, I have not been able to break one... It's amazing how temperamental it seems to be.

So to be clear... Poly tanks are coming... Stainless tanks in about 5-6 weeks and Quartz may go the way of the dodo if too many more have issues. I think I will keep them available for folks that would rather replace tanks than use plastic or steel... But as the stock tank... Possibly not. I keep hoping Corning will introduce Gorilla Glass tubing!

You guys were busy today! Took quite a while to get through the thread!

The switch news is great Zen~ Really, my only complaint is that it doesn't stand straight due to the "slop" and is thus more likely to fall over. So, I tend to keep it in my hand constantly which is not a bad thing :)

As for the broken tanks, that's too bad. I really like the glass. If we had slow motion video of the breaks I bet big on the culprit being the cap torquing down onto the lip of the tank during the impact. I know it wouldn't be pretty but maybe an o-ring or thin gasket around the body at the top of the tank to act as a cushion? Just a non-engineer's thought.

Yes sir.. I did say that!

The 18650s I pointed at we're from Isaac over at Ikenvape, and the 18350s were from Clouds of Vapor... These are very good batteries and may be used in the Zenesis without unreasonable fear of hurting yourself.

The only caveat is that these batteries do not perform as well as the AW, though they will do in a pinch. And other than shorter battery life both in terms of charge life and charge cycles before being "used up" these batteries will vape well... Just not as long!

Under NO circumstances do I suggest using ICR batteries Even with protection in ANY mechanical PV. I was saying that before ECF issued the warning.

To get the best possible performance out of the zenesis PV... I strongly recommend the use of AW IMR batteries.

I considered the O ring cushion... Ugly ugly ugly!

I'm working on a solution... I will solve this mystery.

My completely unfounded theory is that the quartz tanks break when the PV hits the deck horizontally, and does so because the quartz tank is not exactly flush with the SS but instead sticks out just a fraction of a hair. Thus, it takes the hit first and cracks. While the o-ring cushions shock behind the quartz, there is no cushioning between the cut ends of the quartz and the adjacent SS.

I just made that up, based on nothing but staring at my Mini and using my thumb to feel that the quartz is not flush with the SS. Needless to say, it might be completely wrong, it's just my guess, that's all.

Question the fused quartz are they being tempered after they are cut, or are they just being cut, the reason I am asking is because micro stresses from the cutting can be the difference, when the temper the fused quartz after the cut it makes the edges perfect so the stress fractures can't grow.

SO basically the thing that could be causing tank breakage could have been the shipping itself if depending on how the glass was cut. But I am sure you thought of that already........

Funny thing... You and I on the same page again! My first call after the first one broke was to the quartz provider to ask if I can have them flame polished then annealed... I have samples coming to experiment with...

But I'm not getting my hopes up just yet and I am working towards a fall-back position with plastic and SS.

It's possibly the case... But you have no idea how many times I intentionally dropped one to see if it would break.

I was able to break it eventually, but I didn't drop it... I threw it!

Hard!

Thinking out loud here, and Karma may have some input on this... When I was a kid... We had a lot car... A lot car is an abandoned car that runs and we drove them in farmers fields. Anyway... We decided to go all AJ Foyt on and and we wanted to bust out the windows in case we rolled it, we would have to deal with glass in our unhelmeted unprotected baby faces.

We threw a rock at it... No break... Then a bigger rock... Nothing.... The about a 24 pounder... It bounced right off! The in frustration I threw a handfull of gravel at it... The window literally exploded from gravel hitting it.

My father explained stored energy to me that day and surface tension... It's still freakishly mysterious!

well, at least there will be multiple tank options coming in the future.

good stuff.

Hey Zen, are the marchers still on schedule to start being built monday? If so, will payment requests go out when they are done and ready to be delivered? If so, I will have a specific email that I would want that sent to since I will be out of town.

let me know and I will verify the address by PM.

Right.

Trying to make things break is one thing. Arranging to have them hit the deck while *exactly* in horizontal alignment is something else. I don't know how to do that.

Have there always been G+, Facebook, and Twitter buttons at the top of posts or did something change in, ummm, the past few minutes?

- Tim
Oh Good!! It is not just me - the cat walked across my computer and I thought he changed some secret settings! lol

PS - welcome home Mike :)
