That's what happens when you wrap about a dozen before you realize that the bottom coil will not fire at the same rate as the rest once there is juice in it.
What I'm trying to say is that I had a lot of practice
I love doing it. It's fun.
I don't know what I did differently. Maybe it was just a matter of patience. The last thing I tried today was holding it upside down over a paper towel (to catch juice) and burning it off as it dripped down. *shrugs* It would seem this wick took longer than average to start wicking and I'm not sure it's at 100 percent yet, but it's definitely getting there! I put in another post everything I've tried so far. It was either a combination of things or just waiting till the wick was ready.

You may have just broken it in! My genesis didn't REALLY start performing wicking wise until about the 3rd or 4th tankful. It should only get better
I have found that if you make the wick too thick it doesn't wick well. It doesn't need to be a tight straw, it's okay to have a nice sized hole in the center of the wick. It's just something I have noticed. I don't know if anyone else noticed that.
