Just read this today. Certainly a reason to use IMR.

[h=1]OrlandoSentinel.com[/h][h=2]Report: Electronic cigarette explosion leaves Panhandle man severely hurt[/h]From the Web

A man in the Florida Panhandle community of Niceville lost all of his teeth, part of his tongue and suffered facial cuts when the electronic cigarette he was smoking exploded, WEAR-Ch. 3 television reported.

Photographer, Vietnam veteran and father of three Tom Holloway was being treated at a burn center, the station reported.

A neighbor told WEAR that Holloway had quit smoking traditional cigarettes because of his health and had taken up so-called electronic cigarettes about two years ago.

Fire officials theorize that the cigarette's battery somehow ignited and it was essentially as if Holloway was "holding a bottle rocket in his mouth," the station reported.

The full WEAR report can be accessed at http://www.weartv.com.

here is the full story:

A strange accident has left a Niceville man with severe injuries and burns.
He was smoking an electronic cigarette when it blew up in his face.

Laura Hussey "When firefighters here at the North Bay station got the call there'd been an explosion in someone's home, they thought it might be an oxygen tank. It turns out something much smaller had done some awful damage"

Tom Holloway is a photographer, a Vietnam Veteran, a father of three.

Wendy Jensen/Friend "Just a super nice guy, and he's had some health problems with his lungs and so he, he quit smoking"

Neighbor Wendy Jensen says Holloway had been using electronic cigarettes for about two years.

Monday evening, his wife heard a loud noise from the study.
"She said that it sounded like a firecracker, and it was just a horrible noise, and she heard him scream and she ran in there"

Holloway's cigarette had exploded.
The debris that flew around the room was so hot, it melted everything it touched.

Chief Butch Parker/North Bay Fire District "And what we believe was in the battery, and whenever the battery ignited, it was basically like him holding a bottle rocket in his mouth"

Wendy Jensen "It exploded in his face, and it knocked out all his teeth and part of his tongue and he had blood all over his face, and it set the study on fire"

Jensen says Holloway has been transferred to a burn center.
Firefighters say it was impossible to tell the brand of the electronic cigarette; this is the first time they've heard of one exploding.

Wendy "Oh it's horrible, we were just up all night thinking about it, it's horrible"

Laura Hussey "This incident has been reported to a national database, so any possible patterns can be identified."

No offense, DDD, but it seems almost every new thread and many established ones have already mentioned this story.

Not sure if the media finally caught wind of the exploding PV that was mentioned here weeks ago or if this is a new incident. Either way, it's alarming and I hope the gentleman (or gentlemen) make(s) a full and speedy recovery.

OMG...that is too scary for words and SO sad for him. I'm glad he's alright. I would LOVE to know exactly what he was vaping and the kind of battery he was using.

I just had a VERY scary thing happen with my eGo-T passthrough this morning. When I released the power button, the Smok Mega Dual Carto wouldn't stop sizzling! I immediately pulled out the USB from my laptop and the carto was so hot, it burned me. I had to use a rag to disconnect it from the battery before it would stop burning. Scared the crap out of me. I guess the carto shorted out? The passthrough is working fine with a new mega carto.

I am so looking forward to no more cartos and atomizers....except I just bought my husband a new Jazz carto pipe, so we'll still have his cartos to deal with. He was a cigar and a pipe smoker for years and mooched cigarettes. Since he started vaping, he misses his cigars and pipe. I couldn't find a decent ecigar without the plastic mouthpiece, so I decided on the Jazz pipe and bought him some cigars and a small humidor so he can always have a few cigars around when the craving hits him. ;) At least I won't be dealing with 4 different ecigs/mods with cartos/atomizers anymore.

This battery explosion issue makes me a tad nervous though. Even knowing I will be using the safest batteries on the safest mod...my husband won't be. He'll be using the AW IMR 18350 batteries, but not on a Zenesis. Zen~, How about a PIPE or ecigar made out of ss? :)

The article is dated February 14, 2012. I think this may be another one exploding?

It seems to me it's a new incident as well. However, the two stories are so eerily similar and I was never able to find an article on the other one that I'm just not sure...

This happened the 13th I believe... It would almost have to be some sort of mod... I do not think a pen, mini, or super mini would have enough material in it to "burn through everything it touched" noticeably that is... But yes my prayers are with him and his family at the moment.....

they've been talking all about this incident all over the web....a majority of those talking about it are saying this is a hoax and looks like a lot of the pictures and video is photoshop'd... sorry but i find it hard to believe that it failed so freaking quickly....I've had a couple of LiPo's, nicads and Nimh's go before, there's always some kind of warning before they go....namely overheating...and it doesnt happen in a fraction of a second, short or not... even in an unvented / unprotected battery, there'll still be warning before something decides to let go...

I wasn't there so I don't know... At this point just about anything you can read is just speculation. Why is it that whenever a potentially harmful aspect of the e-cig hobby/lifestyle is brought to light are some so quick to sweep it under the rug or yell FAKE!

Thanks for the post DDD, although its quite unlikely to happen in Zens Mod. Battery safety is important and that story is a important reminder.

Go the AW IMR!!!

If by some odd chance an IMR battery vents in a Zenesis PV:

1: NO FLAMES IMMEDIATELY WILL EXIT THE MOUTHPIECE... There is a Nylon Ferrule on the center post inside the PB... then further up there is a Threaded Ballistic Nylon Slug blocking the center hole, and above that there is a Threaded Stainless Steel Post. Even if flames made it past the first ferrule, they would not get past the ballistic nylon slug and stainless post.

2: Because of the heat involved in this reaction, you would DROP the PV as it heats up... any venting would be through the side of the switch at the very bottom. And letting go of it stops the flow of electricity... it would continue to vent, however once it has started... but you will still have your face.

And that is assuming you can get an AW IMR battery to vent...

With the rash of these other PVs exploding, I can honestly say a person would have to be stupid to use LiIon batteries in a PV, protected or not.

But then again, people would have to be stupid to smoke too... and I think we've all been there.
