Yes, I had read that, maybe it was stewing subconsciously in my brain.
However to set the record straight on this, everyone who know me knows that I make the best scratch/home-made pizza, so your daily arguments are for naught anyway... :D

morning everyone.
RE, the restaurant analogy's, see my post about the pizza place :)

Good morning, everyone!

Still no joy with my Standard. Must have done 10 coils so far, and they look better and better (only esthetically). Keep having the exact same problem - the top and/or bottom coil / lead glow all the time.

Dry burn - everything appears to glow in unison.
Wet burn - top and/or bottom glow.

Worst of all, this thing emits fumes that feel very noxious - they burn my nose and eyes, and have a scent reminiscent of... formaldehyde!

I'm not sure what's going on...

I tried with two different Zen wicks, and then with a wick I made myself. Tried with PG and with VG. Tried with the original insulator (melted portion trimmed), and tried with a brand new insulator and tried without any insulator.

There is no difference if the wick touches the bottom or not. There is no difference with a fully charged or half discharged battery. Apologies to Zen, but I also I measured the O-word every time and it is in the same expected range at all times.

Some issues -
  • most of the times, following Zen's video, I end up with a sharp turn / kink in the Kanthal wire at the base screw - does it have to do with anything?

  • There is either too much tension in the bottom lead wire, or it's too slack and touches the base. Honestly, I don't see any harm in it touching the base - that's where the negative contact is made anyway, but still....

  • I see videos and I see the top and bottom leads don't glow on people's coils when they wet burn. But in my mind, I can't see why they wouldn't glow - they can't possibly stay wet with liquid... Or.. if it's a heat being dissipated in the whole wire / mesh thing, how come they always glow on my coils? I'm getting very tired of thinking about this...

  • Why the noxious fumes? Even if there is some imbalance in the coil, why that irritant a fume? Again I'm not inhaling, I'm just standing there as I burn the coil and my eyes water and my nose burns... Really? Is that normal?

I know, I know, I'm so incompetent. I feel really down. I'm actually depressed by this and I know I'm an idiot, but I just can't figure it out. My only semblance of redemption - the original Zen coil also kept glowing at the bottom even as liquid was dripping off the top of the wick, and then it caught fire...

we will figure this out.

My first question is, have you tried tightening the main post? Or at least seeing if it is loose?

also when making the coil, do you angle the first wrap up at a 45 degree angle as it first makes contact with the mesh?

Yep - I am one of those Maya snobs, but I use a lot of other tools as well, such as AutoCad for making 3d versions of prototype parts to be but to waterjet or CNC. Daz3d has its purpose and spot in the world, I don't knock it at all.

Maya snob and Maya user are two different things. =) I am a Maya user as well, I just use it to make things for people to render in Studio. I begrudgingly support Poser when it's convenient. I'm most comfortable modeling in Hexagon since it's what I learned first, though I use Maya and Modo as well to do things Hex can't or can't as easily. It's a dead simple little dedicated modeling program.
My market is still split almost 50/50 between people who are still fiercely holding on to Poser's archaic old system and the ones who've joyously adopted the Genesis weight mapped model. I've been developing mostly for Genesis and trying my best to ignore the constant whining from the people instisting they shouldn't have to switch programs to use something that their program can't support. (and they're practically identical programs, WTF!?)

Main post is solid. Doesn't have any give.

No, I don't angle it. My coils look somewhat like this: zen's coil only a bit less evenly spaced...

I'll add that I also tried to remove the wick completely, and glow only the coil - it does not emit the fume / irritant vapor so it's not the kanthal, I guess.

OK - no snob here then. I am a Maya USER. I also use Modo, Silo, and Blender. Render engines vary just as much. I am happy to meet another 3d artist here - and one that VAPES to boot! Imagine that!

Likewise! :D

This is what I've been fighting with today.. just finished adjusting the rigging, working on rigidity mapping now, then I get to fight with the morphs. (ugh)

That texture is pretty awesome! I think I am going to model a Zenesis Cobalt now and duplicate it a bunch of times, render it out with my photo-real touch, and post it here entitled "My Zen Army". See how many people cry and whine "How did you get them? Are you selling them?".... LOL - I am so evil....
