It costs me an average of $50 in taxes everytime Zen ships me something

I used to love how they would randomly attach GST(Goods and Services Tax) to some things and not others. I know you're in the HST camp and it's higher but it was still annoying. More due to the fact that it seemed completely arbitrary.

Also loved customs. They would let the strangest stuff through with no problems and then sieze two t-shirts for an entire month.

Question if I may......

When you guys (Americans) get a package from outside of the States......do you have to pay taxes or duties over a certain amount?

I had a couple of very expensive packages get lost for a few days. They're back on track thank God, but it got me thinking about insuring them for full value from now on. Would you get nailed with taxes or fees?

Yes. My fiance is Mexican and moved to the US when she was a child. She has a Uncle in Mexico City and we sent him a laptop from Vegas to Mexico City. I insured the package for $300 which was only a $10 charge and ended up paying $185 for standard shipping. Two weeks later we get a call from her uncle and he told us that he had to pay 15000 pesos, roughly $150 American in taxes to customs. Its really a jacked up system. I know JPRacing has a lot of knowledge about shipping out of country. You may want to pm him.

OH
In EU I think it happens. After my country had joined the EU, they were trying to tax everything coming from the outside at the post office. Last year, I sent a surprise gift to someone back home, and I did check the "gift" box, and yet they were charged customs fees. Outrageous!... Emonty, is that true in Holland?

I ordered a couple things from HoH, the SS tank on the 7th and a couple other things on the 10th, I understand the 10th was a couple days ago but I haven't received any shipping notice for the SS Tank, does it normally take this long to ship? Not complaining just wanted to know maybe something fell through?

No, od, I'm sure you are fine. Shipping from HOH slows down when Zen in the middle of a giant push to get APVs out the door. Probably the only reason the Mystery Boxes went out so quick is those things were already in a Priority Box when they were purchased.......LOL..........You will get the stuff you ordered, never fear.......

Good. I'm playing it safe from now on. I was always worried about costing the recipient extra money

I wouldn't be so quick to rely on the "no" taxes answers you got K-man. Whether we are rquired to pay duty/import taxes does depend on the value and type of the item.

This is from the US Customs and Border Protection site, for packages requiring duty: "Note: Most personal shipments worth up to $200, and gift packages worth up to $100, will pass duty-free as long as the recipient does not receive multiple packages in a single day whose cumulative value is more than these amounts". And whether the package requires duty or not depends on the classification of the contents placed on the customs form. I confess that the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the various classifications is so complex and long-winded that I am totally unsure what classification you could use, if any, to escape duty on something that's expressly valued at $500.00!

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/126/related/1/~/mail---goods-requiring-duty

Edit: Further clarification - on another page it is even clearer that any mailed items valued over $200 are going to be subject to import duty, and even handling fees on top of that:

"Finally, many people make the mistake of thinking that the $800 personal exemption from duty for international travelers also applies to goods sent to the U.S., but this is not the case. The personal exemption may only be applied to goods accompanying travelers. While duty may be waived for most goods entering the U.S. whose value is $200 or less, any item(s) whose value exceeds $200 will be subject to duty as well as postage handling fees". https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/501/related/1/~/mail---goods-requiring-duty

All over the place
I changed mine back to the old one that I'm not that crazy about either, but the new one has a 'sterile' feel to it that I don't like.......

Sorry for butting in, but the new one and the old one could be updated with a vaper puffing on a real PV. Just a thought. I mean, c'mon! An 808 with a blue light? It is almost 2013! hahahahaha.
