How can you tell when a silica wick needs to be replaced?

Just wondering, on cartos it either doesnt wick right or tastes burned but I am not sure how to tell on silica.

same thing...taste goes bad but silica can be re-torched (turns snow white again) if it is good quality and it will taste brand new... give it a whirl.

are you serious? you can torch silica wick and it turns WHITE again?
