How Did You Become a Vaper?

Hi Everyone,

As the title suggests, we want to know how and why you started vaping. I’ll break the ice.

The evening before my twenty-ninth birthday, I noticed that I had five cigarettes left in my pack. In the months prior, I developed a cough, and I adopted hacking up black mucus as part of my morning ritual. At the time, I was working at a gas station, and every day I saw multiple examples of the physical toll caused by smoking. Seeing this on a daily basis, I knew I didn’t want to smoke cigarettes into my thirties. My girlfriend had recently quit smoking by taking up vaping, so the idea was not foreign to me.

I looked at the five cigarettes and told her that I was ready quit. She set me up with an eGo-C Twist, an iClear 16, and a bottle of tobacco flavored e-liquid. The next morning (March 6, 2013), I sat outside and smoked my last cigarette, knowing that it’d be my last. Since putting it out, I haven’t touched a cigarette. The first three months were, at times, difficult. These days, though, I don’t think about cigarettes. They’re no longer part of my physical or mental routine. My cough is gone, and I have much more energy at thirty than I did at twenty-eight.

How did you begin your vaping journey?

I started smoking when I was 17 (which is not as young as some people I know, unfortunately). Over the years, my smoking increased in frequency, especially once I started college ( = chain-smoking while working on homework outdoors:facepalm:) and then working at the kind of place where you can only get a break if you step outside for a cigarette. Everything was "fine" until about two years ago, when all of a sudden my throat started feeling alternately tender and raspy, and I started hacking. It was awful/disgusting, and I knew it was time to stop smoking.:(

Right around the same time, a family member had just discovered e-cigs and was very vocal about how much they were helping him. So, I thought..why not? I've nothing to lose by giving e-cigs a shot. Shortly thereafter, I got a (severely overpriced) 510 starter kit from a local flea market, a few small bottles of juice and was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. For me at least, the ability to vape indoors was a major, major plus. As a smoker, I'd never smoked indoors for obvious reasons, but my habit was such that if I was watching tv and saw smoking (especially Old Hollywood films, where every self-respecting femme fatale smokes:p), I too would have to take a break to have a cigarette. Also, as much as I enjoy living in Florida, having to deal with the insane humidity/heat/rain in the summer while attempting to smoke, just plain sucks. Likewise for smoking with an open window while driving lol

Anyway, so that's my story - I've come a longggggggggg way since that 510 starter kit a couple of years ago, and I haven't touched a cigarette since. I love it. I feel better, breathe better, am able to taste and smell things better. It's awesome.:)

to ecf mr_bones. So glad we are "both" here. :D I honestly just wanted to save a little bit of money. Thought vaping would help. Loved it from the beginning and before I knew it.......I just preferred vaping and it has been over a years since I had my last cigarette. I think vaping became a hobby. And then an obsession. And then a passion. :sneaky: The best part of ecf are all the wonderful people I have met. Good luck to you and your very smart girlfriend.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Rat2chat!

Congrats on going over a year without a cigarette! The financial considerations are significant. Of course, then it becomes a hobby . . . But I agree. It's much more enjoyable than smoking, and you can't put a dollar sign on the health benefits. I will pass along your warm wishes to my girlfriend. Thanks again!

Ok, soooo my story....

I had been smoking since I was 15, hanging with the cool kids who were smoking. Funny enough not to long before I started vaping I was hacking up big black chunks and it really freaked me out. My boyfriend went on his annual pool tourny up in Kentucky back in January of this year, on one of our nightly calls he said that he had found this vaperizer on sale and that he really wanted us to quit smoking together so that it would be easier on both of us so he picked me one up too. Now I had tried the Blu e-ciggs a few years back and it didn't work for me so I really didn't think this was going to do much for me either but I figured I give it a shot for him.

I had already cut myself back to 4 ciggs a day at this point because I wanted to quit for my 5 year old daughter who every time I lite up said "Mommy smoking is soooo bad for you when are you going to stop?". Needless to say it broke my heart every time, not to mention I started thinking what if something happened to me and I left her with out her mommy and how I never ever wanted to leave her, she's my everything !! So, he brought these e-ciggs home and showed me how to set it up, he quit right when he started vaping but I was still sneaking in a cigg or two everyday.

One day while smoking a cigg right before bed my daughter once again asked me when I was going to stop, so I said to her "this is the last one". Mind you I still had a few left in my pack but I knew the temptation with them sitting there was just too great for me. I grabbed the pack and asked my daughter to come over to where the trash can was in the kitchen. I handed her a cigg and said "Break it and throw it in the trash" she looked at me and smiled :) One by one I took out the ciggs and handed them to her to break until there were none left.

That was April 2nd of this year, I haven't touched a cigg since. Since I've quit I have this feeling of relief, I no longer think about something happening to me and leaving my daughter behind, I don't feel guilty about picking her up off the couch to take her to bed when she fell asleep because I dont stink of ciggs. I hug her as tight as I can because I know I smell good lol, my breath doesn't stink, I dont have to take breaks during family activities to have a smoke, I taste and smell sooo much better which is great because I love sushi even more than I did before ....yummmm and I can run without feeling like i'm about to stroke out. Vaping has had a huge impact in my life and my daughters life and I couldn't be happier !!!!

So there's my story.... who's next ?

As Gheorghe Muresan famously said, "Do it for the kids!" OK, it was a Snickers commercial, but I can't think of a better reason to take charge of your health. I'm sure your daughter is, and will continue to be, very thankful that you have chosen a healthier lifestyle. Holding your daughter without worrying about the smell of cigarettes is another outstanding reason. I'm happy for your both :)

I saw people in the bar using egos and thought if they can do it so can I..I went out and bought one and never smoked again...now after 1 year I have an MVP and vaping is so nice and clean!!

rbeckys8, thank you for sharing your experience, and congrats on removing cigarettes from your life! I love the MVP. It's such a durable, consistent PV. Also, "if they can do it so can I" reminds me of SB Champion Russell Wilson's mantra "Why not me?" That's a winning attitude.
