How do you build your coils?

I use alot of different gauge wire because I like variety. Most recently I built a single microcoil for my Fatty clone using 24 gauge wire 14 wraps around a 7/64" drill bit and pulled through 2mm ekowool doubled over. Came out at .9 ohm and works crazy well because the fatty has the posts so ridiculously far apart.

Because the coil wrappers at the factory haven't cought up with what's going on in the real world.

Actually, at a factory they would never heat the coils to make a micro, nor would they ever use cotton wick.
(once the coils have been heated, they can never be left dry)

K. I got bored and wound one like that. Got it super even and lighting from the middle. 28G. 1.3 ohm. (Replacing the 1 ohm micro that was on it.). Throat hit was cray cray. Same juice, same double under cotton wick job.

I pulled it and replaced it with a smaller micro coil.

I think its surface area because its longer.

I'm not much into coil wrapping as an art, I just keep supplies around so that I will never be without a vape. A zip lock bag full of old washed out heads, a roll of wire, and some silica wicking gives me a sense of security. At $1.50 a pop, I'm not against using stock coils in 1.8 or 2 ohm resistance. I get 2 or 3, sometimes 5 or 6 days out of one and then it goes in the bag for rebuild.

If I have time on my hands and a movie to watch, I'll wind up a few and insert some Q-tip cotton in them. I'd like to have a Russian for the flavor everyone raves about, but $96 is a little much to spend on an atomizer.

Anyone have suggestions for a cheaper RBA that provides great flavor?

dave p: I'm rocking a kayfun 3.1 clone and it delivers a pretty solid vape on 32g kanthal silica setup. ohmed out at 2.3 ohms. you can get the kf 3.1 clone in the US for about 50-60 ish dollars (so maybe a russian is a better bet there or if you can wait for the slow boat from china you can get it for 22 dollars on fasttech.

Nice coil-wrapping skills though, Asmo - nicely evenly spaced!

Thanks. I've only been winding coils for like 2 days. So... I'm still trying to figure out the mechanics of it. I think because the spaced coil heats a larger area of saturated wick simultaneously - that is why the throat hit was increased. It should have been a calmer coil going from 1ohm to 1.3ohm. But the 1ohm micro was a lot better to me because the throat hit wasn't so intense. Vapor and flavor was similar. But now I know how to get more throat hit from a weak juice or RDA? I'll wind two like that for the Helios and see - since that was airy and hits fairly soft. (For us non-direct inhale people not trying to blow clouds)

The Aqua clone I have was wound like a sping too. It also has a bit of a burny throat hit to it. I think micro's would work better in it. You could hit it harder without the throat hit being as severe to maybe get more flavor. I guess I'll experiment.

Take the Aqua to micro's and the Helios to springy's and see if the primary change is throat hit. Then maybe that will answer why they are wrapped how they are?

(ETA: It could be the juice I initially used too in the Aqua. And the fact it has a pretty steep learning curve with the juice and airflow control. It is not exactly self explanatory getting it dialed in just right.)

Anyone have suggestions for a cheaper RBA that provides great flavor?

I'm a newb, but I think the IGO-L with it's small hole and chamber, and it's $12 price tag... is great. I get really good flavor from it. But I don't have a lot of experience, nor am I taking room filling lung hits with it. But to use it as a tester, or just for quick dripping. I think it's great.

Rebuilt the aqua...

Raaaawr... This thing makes me want to kick babies down steps. Thumb screws. Not a fan. Realizing the post was loose and watching the coil you just built turn into a pulled spring. (Rawr). Also. 32G kanthal. I hate you.

Anyway.

They were nice. By the time I got them cinched down after making the second set... And fiddling with them to get the wires more even, wicked... They are a little messy. Did I mention I reaaaaaaly hate 32G kanthal? Its a .093 diameter wrap. Cotton. 1.2 ohm. Dead on what I was shooting for.

How's she vape? Oh man. Flavor like the Igo. Way calmer throat hit. And it just keeps rolling. You can just keep tugging on it. (I'm not lung hitting this.). But I can just keep hitting it.

I hate this RDA as much as I like it. It's so good but a huge pain IMO. I want the same thing but single coil.

I roll with a 29 ga true / proper micro coil - it's wrapped around a 1.5mm rod and is 1.6 ohms. It's wicked with CVS sterile rolled cotton and vapes like a proper micro coil should.

By the way, just cause you scrunched your wraps together don't make that big ole coil a micro coil. It's amazing how many people I see that have COMPLETELY misconstrued the concept.

Try making one that complies with this little fact sheet then you can say you vaped a micro coil :)

What's hilarious is that the original micro coil started as just a very tiny diameter coil with wraps that were close to touching and some touching. It evolved to include mostly touching wraps and ultimately all touching wraps as our build skills increased.

How is it that I can say this with such conviction? cause I built it and started the original micro coil threads :)

The part where you have to "fire and squeeze your coil" for it to be a micro was proliferated by people on YouTube who got their misinformation like third hand and expounded upon it. Even a slightly skilled builder does not need fire to get their wraps to touch :)

Micro, nano, uber, flying tiger, barbed, dragon, ninja coils...

That's what I was building. Hold on, let me make a chart real quick to make sure what gets built qualifies...

FYI: There's also a magic spell you have to cast on the coil before firing it the first time or the depths of hell will explode out of the atomizer and consume the universe. It requires the soul of 3 tomatoes and the tears of a virgin tuna fish.

Ok copyright paperwork filed.

Asmo you forgot about the Flying Midget Nano Fogger From Hellz coil bro. That's a great build! ;)
