How long did it take you to convert to e-cigs and why?

About 2 years. I had big trouble with my throat with the gear I was using and developed eczema, which turned out to be unrelated or mostly so. So I quit vaping. Over a year later, I saw someone vaping and appearing to greatly enjoy it and realized I was envious and had really enjoyed it. So much so I was willing to risk it being bad for me and even the possibility of itching madly all over. From there it still took 9 months. Some of what it finally took was better equipment, but those saying I needed WAY bigger did me no favors.

The very first vape I took was an "ah ha this is going to work moment" and I never smoked again. Quite miraculous really after 33 years of smoking.
The reasons I started vaping were my health, the cost of smoking and just plain old curiosity about this new thing out there. I had a nasty cough that would hit about every 15 minutes all during the day. In the mornings when I first got up I had to use an inhaler to open me up enough so I could start coughing for the day. All that's gone away now.
Even though the cost of smoking was one of the main reasons I started vaping, that went out the window pretty fast. I developed a bit of shinyitis and never held back if I wanted to try something. So, I've spent just as much the last few years of vaping as I would have spent smoking. But, I collected a pile of cool trinkets(as opposed to collecting a couple of thousand empty packs and a pile of empty plastic inhalers) and learned the ins and outs of being a self-sufficient vaper along the way. Being a self-sufficient vaper these days is a priceless skill in my book.

Less than a week. I didn't actually intend to quit, just cut back some. Well, cut back I did. Right down to zero after my first equipment upgrade, from a CE-something to a Pro Tank 2 in December of 2013. After 36 years of smoking, and having more-or-less given up on the idea of ever quitting, being able to give up my 2 PAD habit like that felt like a miracle.

Today, five years ago, I spent €50 on what you see below.
I have upgraded many many times since then, but that was the day I smoked my last pure tobacco cigarette.

about a week. Mainly because I still have an almost-full pack of Reds at the time. That was the last pack I bought.
And to be honest, I didnt actually plan to quit smoking, I was just planning to reduce, but after few days of vaping I cant stand the taste of a cig, so I guess it's a win!

I started vaping because of the cost savings over smoking.

In Australia, the continuing tax increases on cigarettes were reaching limits of my income, and that's probably a very good thing I switched over to vaping because we had to move house shortly after. The only reason I can comfortably pay rent here is using the money saved from smoking.

I had one single cigarette within 24-hours of vaping before I threw them away, I did struggle/withdrawl quite a bit. however, I think that time could have been shortned/easier if I knew what I do now about nicotine levels, sub-ohming and other vape related things. I've spent a lot of time helping people convert over, particularly explaining the things I missed myself so they transit over easily and smoothly.

It took me forever to realize any savings. I kept buying new stuff. In the last eighteen months, I started to see savings. I settled in and quit buying.
It also took me a while to quit, I smoked two every morning for months. One day I realized that I had become a non-smoker, I hadn't smoked my two for quite some time.

I'm open to buying hardware occasionally though have a lot of self-control from previous hobbies.

I admit in early days when discovering my vaping technic (MTL / DL) I spent quite a few hundred. The main cost cutting I mention is building my own coils, using rebuildable RDAs, mixing my own juice, I source my PG/VG direct from main suppliers and vape unflavored juice (which I quite enjoy). Cut every corner possible, though I'm still open to purchasing hardware and the occasional consumer juice if interested now and then.

In Australia the pouch of tobacco I smoked costs around $30 AUD, which would last 2-3 days. When buying/mixing in bulk 30mls of juice last me the same amount of time and cost just 50 cents. ;)

I admire your self-control. I went through several mods before settling in on a REO. I used to buy coils, cartomizers and the like. Now, I rebuild, mix my own and, at long last, I am saving.
