I've gotten my coils to burn inside-out, but when I put the chimney on and go to vape, I've been getting nothing. My guess is that the chimney disconnected one of the leads. That has happened twice now.

the metal spire chimney thing goes down ... you talking about the protank , right? if so the metal spire chimney thing goes down and is shorting out the coil

I've been vaping for 6 months and after hours upon hours of You Tube videos, ECF reading, practice and experimentation, I wrap coils like a boss. :)

The kayfun style is a good first rebuildable.....but a dripper is better. Less liquid wasted when your build doesn't work out.

pbusardo has a great video on building the Kayfun/Russian, and I've found his method of placing the coil (ends of the coil squarely facing the wells) offers better wicking than putting it on the easy way at an angle.

That's mostly what I did. The problem I think is that, when they are building, the posts are better suited for their wires. Most of RipTrippers builds involve the wire going through a post and then tightened. My posts are two very small screws that I have to manage to wrap my wires around. I'm thinking that may be my issue

tightened WITH A NUT; Nuts are easier to work with than bolts/screws.

Hey, all.

I just got a new Tabeco Kayfun lite clone, and I'm attempting to build on it. This is my first RDA, and so far it is nothing but a pain in the .... I've burnt the hell out of my fingers, too.

So, how long did it take you to learn how to build when you got into RDAs?

Just been vamping for four weeks. Got a russian 91% two days ago and have it going like a champ. Watched this vid and did just as it said and everything is working perfect with 65/35 juice.

I'm still not that good at coils, I stick to silica and 1.8 Ohms or so. But I still enjoy the heck out RDAs and my Kayfun.

I think I watched about half a dozen youtubes before doing my first RDA. It took about half an hour and 3 or 4 tries to get the first one working. I found protank heads fiddley to work on,due to their small size, until I got some ready-wire pre-coiled wicks for them. The kayfun was a breeze in contrast. Worked first time with a very simple build, like what Phil does in his Russian review. A PBusardo Review - The Russian - YouTube

I don't post this to brag in any way, just to encourage anyone interested to give rebuildables a try. Kayfun is pretty easy to work on and provides a big payback for your trouble.

My first build of the Kayfun with 2mm ekowool and 4/3 wraps 32AWG kanthal was a non starter, it gurgled and flooded AND I got dry hits. So I took it apart and looked, and my wicks weren't sitting in the juice wells and were too long, so I trimmed them and positioned them right, and put it back together and vaped all day. So I reckon it took me 15 minutes to learn. Since then, I've come to realise that it is in fact easier to wrap a microcoil and use cotton than use a "traditional" coil, and it only takes me a handful of minutes to wrap a 7 or 8 wrap 28AWG kanthal microcoil round a tiny jewelers screwdriver by keeping the kanthal taught and rotating the screwdriver, and then attach it to the posts, position the coil, remove the screwdriver from the coil, test the resistance, fire it until it's red hot and compress it with tweezers until there are no gaps, and then thread a length of cotton through it. Soon you get to the stage where you can get your required resistance every time (1.5ohms with me) and make the most aestheitcally perfect coils going. Then your microcoil will last a couple of months and all you need to do is replace the cotton every now and again.

So each time you do it you will get better until you get the perfect setup every time. Keep trying!

opened up my nephews rda to look at his, then went home and took two tries to get my resistance and coil diameter right. haven't wasted any kanthal since then. i guess it helps that i've had previous experience winding my own inductors and transformers for other projects. winding microcoils is a breeze too. just don't ask me how hard it was to wind my first transformer.

I wrapped my first nice looking coil the same day I got my first roll of Kanthal. It's not hard. I wish people would stop pretending like wrapping coils, learning mechs and using an ohm calculator is tough. Do some research and have a go at it IMO.

Bully for you. I can tear down an automobile engine and put it back together without too much thought. Big whoop. It is the small wire gauge that got to me. Perhaps it's the OP's problem as well.

Maybe your just used to handling small things.

LOL. You got me there. I've rebuilt one engine in my life and spent more time trying to figure out where each nut and bolt went back than actually driving the car.

You know, if I didn't have the guidance of a friend of mine who builds, I doubt I'd have ever left Provari behind. He basically had to do it in front of me twice, two more times with me sitting next to him, and then it was a matter of jumping in feet first. :)

Anyone that has struggled will hate on me, but when I started with a genesis style RBA, my first wick and coil came out great, with minimal fiddling. From the time I grabbed the vapemail out of the mail box, I was up and running in about 30 minutes. By the time I rolled the 3rd wick for it I had stopped any leaking issues and the aga-t was pocket friendly for me from then on.
I had watched maybe half a dozen videos, and picked the method I thought would work best for me.

Switching from genesis with mesh wicks to RDAs with silica or cotton made for even better results.
