How often do you change out your coils?

These coils are less than one day old and they're already looking pretty ratty. I'm wondering if most folks change them daily or are coils turning black and wick turning color is normal within 24 hours?

Thanks,
Charlie

Unless I just want to try something new a coil will last me months, maybe longer, I've never popped a coil that's 30ga or larger. As far as the wick it depends on what juice I'm using, clear, non sweet juices I can get much more time before changing than with a darker and/or more sweet liquid. I just do a dry burn when I change the wick and I'm running again.

Rarely. The only thing I do frequently is pull the cotton out and rewick... That's about every 2 or 3 days. I always burn my coils off when changing cotton too. It burns all the dark off and looks nice again. There's no reason in changing coils unless its broken or you just want a new build. :vapor:

Thank you all for the tips. I'm fairly new with rebuildables, but getting better. Trickiest part I'm finding is getting the wick through the coils. I started wrapping around the wicks, but find my coils much neater when I first go around a drill bit, then feed the wick though the coils. I've been reading some tips here on ECF and have gotten better. One user was dipping in some candle wax, forming a point with the wick then working it through. I have had some success with that, but finding using some scotch tape a bit easier. I wrap some tape around the end of the wick leaving enough overlap to twist a thin point, then using that point to start feeding through the coils. I like to keep the wick snug in the coils but loose enough to move. It will be a challenge leaving the coils on the build on working wicks through but I will give it a shot next time. Right now on using 32G Kanthal A1 with 4-turns on a 3/32 dill bit (2mm ekowool wick).

I usually change mine several times a day when I'm not at work. My days off are vaping days. I sit around building coils for fun. I always put a reliable set up in a couple attys to get me through the week at the end of my tinkering session. When the next day off comes, time to play again.

I've got a couple of Kayfuns going (use 'em each about 3 hrs. a day) that have had the same coils for almost 2 months. Wick changed and dryburned ~ every 5 days. Reason I've kept them in this long? One is 1.2 ohm. the other 1.5, and they both produce a satisfying vape for me. I doubt I'll change 'em out unless they snap during a dryburn.

Trickiest part I'm finding is getting the wick through the coils.

You might try what I do in order to make real easy to install wicks:

I first make my coil with a large enough inside diameter so as to make wicking it easier ... I wrap 28 AWG around a 2.4mm (3/32") drill bit.

10 wraps give me a 1.6 ohm coil.

Then I insert a little piece of wire around a length of 'Cream n Sugar' white cotton yarn. Then pull the cotton yarn through the coil ... That gives you 2 pieces of yarn in the coil.

Cut the yarn to the correct length and your done ... Here are a few photos (authentic Kayfun Lite Plus v2):

I don't change coils that often. Yes they will gunk up quickly depending on the type of ejuice you use and the PG/VG ratio. The darker juices will carbon up the coil faster than clearer juices. Also if you chain vape sometimes the wick doesn't have a chance to absorb enough juice and you may get a dry hit or burnt taste (scorched cotton). If you chain vape give the wick time to replenish the juice... about 20-30 seconds or so depending on the PG/VG ratio.

Regarding any special wick feeding methods basically I manually feed a cotton wick through a 1.8mm coil is what I do. If you take a little time and carefully shape the wick without twisting the heck out of it you'll be able to feed the wick through with no problems.

Just compress the cotton and give it a slight twist to make a pointed end. Don't twist the entire wick, as that may compress it too much and then once in the coil and ejuice expands it then it may be too tight and feed juice properly causing dry hits and possibly scorching the cotton.

I use a dedicated pair of toe nail clippers the blunt the pointed end a little and feed it through the coil and then grasp it with my fingers and gently pull it through to where I want it positioned. You want the cotton to be just slightly snug but loose enough to where it easily slips back and forth with a little tension on it from the coil.

Be sure to center the wick and then gently pull it back and forth a couple of times to ensure that there is an equal amount of cotton on both sides of the coil. Then slightly push the wick toward the coil from both sides to fluff it a little.

Now I use both Kayfun 3.1 ES and Taifun GT HCigar clones and this is the process I use. With the Kayfun I then place the chimney base on the build deck and then trim the cotton wicks just at the top of the chimney. Then I use a micro screwdriver to gently push the wick into the juice channels and flare it to make sure it absorbs the juice well. With the Taifun I pull the chimney base up and nudge the wick into the two slots on the chimney base then screw on the chimney cap. I also make sure the wick is slightly puffed up a little inside the chimney. I then take the clippers and clip the wick to where about 1mm or so of wick is exposed.

Using this method I have not had any juice leaks or draw problems. You can either wet the wick down with ejuice prior to attaching the chimney and then filling your tank or you can just fill your tank and let the RBA sit for about 5 minutes or so to let the juice saturate the wicks thoroughly.

Good Luck and enjoy rebuilding your coils!

i replace my cotton wicks whenever they start to look ratty or dont provide the right flavor. or if my coil gets gunked. the juice is the ultimate variable here regarding longevity of wick/coil. i have one juice that can gunk up a coil with less than 1ml. i have others that can go through 20+ml.

but either way, i just yank the wick, rinse the atty, dry burn the coil, cool the coil, then brush it* and re-install a wick.

i hardly ever replace my coils (micro coils). if i want to try a new build, i'll usually wait until i get a new atty. but not always.

*these little brushes are great to clean off the ashy residue after a dry burn. the coil looks like it has been spit-shined :D

I changed my setup tonight. I decided to give the cotton a try and so far so good. I used FLT SIMs method of doubling over the cotton then using the wire to pull through. I have a few 28G coils I had made up a few weeks backs used and them (10 turns). I stopped at Walmart after work to get some cotton. I couldn't find anything that stated "organic" cotton, but I did get last small roll of white "Peaches and Cream" 100% cotton. I think for under $2, this looks like it will last a few years easy. I could probably change wicks every 12 hours and it will still last a long time. I am vaping some Hoosier House Blend 100% VG Grape right now. The taste and draw is pretty good off the cotton. I was skeptical at first, but the 100% cotton is producing some very decent vapor production. I just put in a fresh Panasonic NCR 3400 mAh battery into the MOD. Typically I do not got with a 100% VG juice, but I want to try some just for dripping. This is extreme for me because I am a 100% PG user in carts and tank carts with the Dekang.

I put the coils on the atomizer first this time instead of wicking them first. I heated them up and notice something not right. One coil appeared to be getting twice as red as the other. I fiddled with it some, did some more wire trimming on the loose ends, getting them as close as possible. I also put a toothpick through the coils trying for better positioning. After a little fiddling, I finally get them both getting red hot at the same time. I am pretty much am change vaper, so I am keeping these cotton wicks wet as possible. That is also a reason why I like using the tank cart system, being I tend to chain vape. I am enjoying building my own coils though, good hobby and skill to have, and nice be a bit more self sufficient as opposed to being reliant on have to always have carts and clearos on hand.

Thanks again for all the feedback, I appreciate all the advice and help I can get....ECF, a great source of info!
