How to clean titanium fused claptons?

So I was debating whether to post this in the build forum or temp control and I figured most of the guys messin' with titanium would be floating around here...


So I've built a few Ti fused claptons (Ti core/Kanthal wrap) and used them successfully on TC devices but my only issue so far has been cleaning them during the re-wicking process.

I've rinsed them, dry-burn with lights off until just the center starts to glow then run them under water again. I've brushed them with a toothbrush.

The gunk just doesn't seem to want to come off. Back in my all kanthal fused Clapton days I would just glow the whole coils orange and run them under cold water and it would always do the trick but for obvious reasons you can't do that with titanium.

And the times where I do pulse them just enough to slightly glow the centers and rinse, I've re-wicked, and then experienced a "weird" feeling that might just be in my head when I vape them again. Like I worry that Ti oxide has formed in the centers where I pulsed them to orange and I just can't see it through the Kanthal outer wrap...

Does anyone have a good method for cleaning/re-wicking these builds? I've heard Ti is supposed to last pretty long and it would be a shame if I had to build new Ti fused claptons every week because of juice build up.

i forgot i had a ti build in my goliath, thought it was a nife48 build and ripped 40 straight watts into to them. it got the gunk off but my coils looked all yellow powdery. i was too lazy to change em so i just rinsed them under hot tap water and that took the yellow away. wicked em up still using today. i'm not saying do this, in fact, i haven't done this again but my juice tasted fine and i didn't die from ti dioxide.

maybe just keep pulsing at low watts and get as much as u can off then call it good enough. or rebuild em. there's my two cents.

It is a PITA. This is 2 core 24gTi fused with 36gK1.

At 9 watts on power mode I managed to fire quench fire quench fire quench back to silver coils. Well the 36gK1 was silver again. Not 100% sure what the TI looks like but I never glowed it. Total PITA to clean.

Good luck on cleaning titanium fused Kanthal claptons. I gave up on them a few months back due to the (excessive) time spent cleaning them during rewicks. Twisted KA1/Ti coils are far easier to maintain. Here is my current Velocity build: Dual 22g KA1 twisted with 26g Ti @ 3mm twist pitch. Comes out to just over 0.08 ohm. Pulse cleans quickly and painlessly. Have yet to try on TC though...

1. Burn at x1.5 above vaping wattage, cold water.
2. Burn at x1.5 above vaping wattage, cold water.
3. Burn at x1.5 above vaping wattage, wait 5sec to cool and use the wire brush to clean the coil inside and out.
4. Burn at x1.5 above vaping wattage, wait 5sec to cool and use the wire brush to clean the coil inside and out.

So you vape Ti on a mech mod?

Yes, as do many others. Ti on a mechanical is a fantastic vape on its own, the only issue being as slight rise in resistance affecting power applied.

The "only" issue? I think it is irresponsible as a vaper to do that and not mention the very important issue of possible Ti O2 formation while vaping Ti on a non-TC device.

If you want to ignore that, fine, but you cannot ignore the fact that you can also completely melt and dissolve your Ti build which can lead to hard shorts on a mech.

A beginner shouldn't be able to just hop on here and see you say that you and many others do it and go grab some and start doing the same with no further education.

In an ideal situation with a Ti build of a high enough resistance, the highest ideal 4.2V delivered from a mech device might not be enough to heat the Ti to TiO2 or its melting point, but that should also be noted.
