When smoking cigarettes, I never understood the concept when others spoke of Throat Hit. In vaping, its killing me. It seems that while vaping, my tonsils and throat get very aggravated. I need to find a way to decrease the throat hit that is coming along with vaping as much as possible. Can you all explain all the factors that increase and decrease throat hit?

From what I have been told these are contributing factors:
High PG
High Nic
Low Ohm coils
High Voltage/Wattage
Using a Kayfun type atomizer or a dripper atomizer.

Any suggestions?

That would be a very very long list, as I've done a lot of experimentation. I have a provari, and have used anywhere between 2.9-5.5v. I have used a Kayfun light plus, Igo-L, RSST, Kracken, Evod, etc. Coils anywhere from 1.5-2.5 ohms. Nic has been anywhere between 6-24. Mixed PG/VG and 100% VG. Home made and store bought from multiple companies.

The odd thing is this: When I used my old ego and ego-C atomizers a long time ago, this problem did not happen. And yes, I drink enough water to kill 10 horses.

Coil position on a dripper is important as well as making sure it has no hotspots, hot legs etc when you make it.

If you want hardly any TH you will position it below the airhole and use low nic, high VG liquid. If you make your own juice you may need to add more flavour, since such a coil and VG mutes it.

My wife hates TH and for her i make coils at about 1.5Ω, which is far higher than anything i use, but she also runs 18mg nic compared to my 6mg. I'm not a user of Kayfuns although i do have a Fogger and a few genesis tanks. Make sure your wicks and coils are clean, because anything that is not wicking properly will dry hit.

It gets uncomfortable less fast with lower power and lower nic, but I'm talking hours, not days. I build microcoils because I find them to be easier to build. I recently learned I was doing my wicking incorrectly, and wasn't putting enough in, and was burning it for months. Ive since fixed that problem, but my wicks and coils seem to gunk up in days, no matter the wicking material used.

I hate throat hit but always vape at 12mg nic. I find that the build itself is a big contributing factor... I find that a coil right in front of the air inlet will reduce throat hit, same reason a kayfun style also gives a smooth vape with less TH... get that coil a little further from the airhole and throat hit will go way up. also with a side air intake, raising the coil allowing more air underneath = more TH, lower the coil can smooth it out and reduce TH... the way the build is set up can be a big contributing factor

Do you have the problem with all wicking materials? And what are you using? Cotton, silica, rayon... ?

Gunking in days can be from a lot of things, but I tend to rewick every couple of tanks on a KF, and for me it's just part of routine maintenance. Clean, remove wick, dry burn, re-wick...

So far I have tested Cotton (organic), Cotton (non organic), Cellucotton Rayon (just confirmed), Steel Mesh and Steel Rope, Ready-X-Wick, sillica (which makes my throat feel like someones sticking needles in it even when saturated). I've tested them all in a dripper just to make sure they were staying visually saturated.

Papa - Yes. It begins gradually but yes. I tested it yesterday. My throat felt torn up by the end of the day.

Well, if you are getting TH issues with 6 mg in an evod on a provari, then you've got a sensitivity that is more extreme than most. Since it builds gradually, it might be the PG. Nic TH gets you on the first inhale (thus, the term throat hit).

Have you tried juice mixes with less PG (more VG)?

That pretty much rules the wick out!

Maybe just vaping too much?
I think that might be what papa is getting at.

Although everyone is different I happen to get less irritation with super high nic than with anything lower. Not having to vape constantly gives my throat and sinuses a break they desperately need.

Reading what I'm reading I'd be inclined to suggest trying something like velvet cloud (night shift is good) in high nic on an rda for a while. Play with the build and power level. Adjust coil placement, air flow, etc. Until you get the least irritation and refine from there.

Velvet cloud vapors juices have been tremendously smooth IME. There are others but that's the first that come to mind for me.

Another option is vaping unflavored. Maybe get some vaperstek nic in pg base and some vg at your local wally world. Vaperstek nic is also very smooth for nic base. This would eliminate any problems you have with flavors. If it works out you could start adding flavors one at a time and rule out those that irritate you. In my house lemon flavors seem to be huge irritants. We love them but avoid them. There's so much else to choose from.

You pretty much nailed it.

When I use to smoke cigs I smoked lights because regulars were to harsh or to much of a throat hit and ultra lights felt like air.

To get a nice light throat hit. Try to get a juice in higher VG. Something like 70/30.

I would also suggest drop your nic down to 6mg. If you can do that it will help a ton. Then from there you can go down to 3mg.

Also the volts and watts have some effect on the throat hit. Try to stay under 3.8 volts and under 12 watts.

Hope this helps.
