Ok, guru's. What causes heat pump to freeze up in cold weather? no heat on our upstairs unit. Downstairs wasn't working but is back on.

BTW - IIRC my Uncle told be there was a way on His Heat Pump that you could Manually do a Defrost. Some Buttons to push and Hold or something. And that He had to do it until they could get enough Money together to buy a New Heat Pump.

Might want to Check your Heat Pump Manual and see if there is any Info on the Defrost Cycle. And if there is a Manual Setting.

Thanks, that is very helpful. I should have googled but I knew some of you would give good direction. Afraid I would mess something up.

    No problem rosesense.

Having lived Most of my Life in a Warm area, I'm a little Lost to all the In's and Out's and Tips n' Tricks of living in a Cold Climate. But like I said, My Aunt and Uncle live in Oregon. And they get a Brief window of Sub Freezing Weather just about every year.

Hows your filter? That was the culprit last time mine froze up.
Mine was always the filter lol. Try shutting off the breaker for a good 5min also.
Might also try to turn it to Emergency settings to turn on the heater strips in the inside unit. I use that solely when super cold out.

As a heat source, a heat pump is a great air conditioner.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Yeah, I had already done the emergency setting and filters are changed regularly. It works intermittently then freezes up again. I did turn the AC on for a few minutes and that helps with the defrost but it also makes it even colder so that was a wash.

Hopefully, will warm up in a couple days. I hate cold weather and miss S GA.

Well, my daughter called furnace people out and they just charged us $500 to change the bad thermostat.

    Yikes... That does sound Pricey.

But if that was for a New Thermostat, Plus the Install, Plus the Service Call, Plus I'm sure their Phones are Ringing Off the Hook, I guess it isn't Highway Robbery.

That's a great idea. I'll need to try it.
I remember, when I was living in England for a couple of years, where except in Scotland it stays fairly temperate with little snow, someone telling me that traditionally for the rare snowy/icy windshield they would simply p on it. So, I was told.

If I remember correctly, you have a heat pump. The thermostat for those is more expensive than for a regular furnace. We had a heat pump years ago and back then the digital thermostat was 120 and that was 20 years ago. A similar standard one at the time was around 40-50. The one that was installed at my shop at work was 400 just for the thermostat.

The thermostat was 90 bucks. The rest was service call and labor.

Did they wash your dishes and mop the floor too?
No, but they should have for that price. I would never have agreed to that price but my daughter just wanted it fixed. Plus, he didn't have any answer for the freezing up of units in the cold. Just said, that happens.

Did they just walk in and change it or did they spend time troubleshooting too? That does seem like a lot of labor. I charge 105 an hour at my work and that would cover about 4 hours.
