People were able to get out of the way of Irma, it just took them forever to do so. Millions left the state and with plenty of time to do so.

Those on the west coast didn't think they would get the punch they did get but there was still time and many did leave. Some headed for the east coast.

Gas shortage was fairly bad but I haven't seen where anyone was absolutely stranded because they ran out of gas. Cars were abandoned because they broke down (if I recall correctly).

There were long lines for gas, and still there are lines around here. Mostly because people are filling up gas cans for their generators and stuff. One place I saw a family that had 5 huge gas cans they were filling. Really? 5? Supersized?

Anyway, I got my coffee at the 7-11 and I'm happy. Still no power but not much I can do about that. ;)

Well, electric came on at 11:15 last night after they said it would be a week to 2 weeks before it's turned on. Still no cable or internet but that isn't absolutely needed. I'm just glad the fridge full of stuff doesn't need to be tossed to the curb. The deep freezer full of venison n hog killed last year was all still frozen thank goodness.

We lost a bunch of frozen food also..But I'm more worried about the five liters nicotine
in the little freezer spending two days not being frozen :(

I was young when Andrew hit. I remember being in school and hearing about it. I think I was still in elementary school at that time. I do remember seeing pics of the Devi station Andrew did. I'm so glad Irma didn't hit us at a Cat 4-Cat 5. I'm in Lakeland and the heart of what was left of the eye hit us hard. We had 100+ mph winds and trees down and damage all over the place. We went and took a drive to survey the damage and it was BAD! Would have been A LOT worse if it was anything more than a Cat 2.

Both Andrew and Camile were cat 5 storms.

I was living in Kentucky at the time of Andrew and the rain there was awful even though by the time Andrew got that far inland it was downgraded to cat 1storm.

Tell ya, I would have been very happy to be in the old homestead of my youth in Central FL or later Nashville when Andrew hit us in S Dade. It's the kind of experience you never forget. Or Donna in '60. Neither lacked vigor when downgraded.

Good luck. :)

There you are! :) I know you're OK 'cause I saw your "I'm OK" update on FB.
It being I'm not new to this hurricane stuff we were (still are) well supplied.
I introduced 'Gita to Sterno for my morning dose of fresh brewed café.

Thanks, Mrs Opi. I'm glad you're Ok also.. :)
Regarding the phone, the cell service came back as soon as my neighborhood and neighborhood cell tower's electricity came back on...so did the VOIP.
(BTW, there are still a great many parts of Miami w/o power. FPL recently "hardened" my neighborhood
(replaced the old wood poles with concrete) because there are two hospitals on the supply line.
They're returning power to police, emergency personnel and hospitals first.

I think you may be referring to Comcast's offer of free WIFI hotspots to non customers
but there aren't as many as you may think... as I'm sure @Robin01 would corroborate.

G*d Bless you too.

Yeah, I'm not seeing the free wifi hotspot anywhere near me. I'm using my phone as a hotspot for my iPad.

Glad you're good, Hazy!!

Coffee is just a short 2 minute drive down the road. Long enough to get some AC on me ;)

Since both my gigs were undoable in the aftermath of Andrew I volunteered with the Red Cross.
Newbs here don't believe me when I tell them trailer parks in Florida City were all knee high.
One could stand on one end and see all the way to the other.

BTW, the Red Cross wasn't very helpful. A bunch of us organized the Green Cross and fed over 30,000 people
with the help of Publix Supermarket donations and Army MRE.s

As in Texas, as soon as the gub'min got into the act the shelters turned into concentration camps.
I almost got arrested by a US Marshall for giving out cans of baby formula at one shelter.

Robino. I listen to a lot of talk radio. And people were calling in to he shows reporting "no gas" at the stations and they simply had to ride the storm out because thsy simply couldn't get out of the way.

Fife days is not a concern 6 months that might mean a problem. Five days is just a blip.

I'm not going to worry about the nic in my freezer. We spent considerable time getting jugs of water frozen and ice cubes into baggies in prep for this. The freezer hasn't been opened so it being packed with ice should keep my nic cold enough. Too bad it doesn't freeze solid. That would have helped since there are at least 8 gallons of PG/nic and VG. I think 4 each(?). Haven't looked in a while.

When electric comes back on, I will assess the damage then. Food stuffs will get tossed. I won't trust them to be fine.

My little freezer needed defrosting anyhow.

Nod on that last remark. Still I was never so impressed in my life how much ordinary people came together as human beings after Andrew. That too was indelibly etched in my memory. As well, the amazing support of so many Americans from all over the country. That is who we are.

Good luck. :)

p.s. The community at the center of Andrews landfall for comparison with Collier County and this storm. My old plinking grounds when it was berms and dug out rock pits…
