I really need some help with this. I started vaping about 2 weeks ago and took to it pretty well. My husband coughs every time he tries to inhale and he is getting so frustrated he wants to go back to smoking. Please tell me how to get him to do it properly because if he goes back, eventually so will I and I don't want that to happen. Right now he is trying to "cold turkey" it because he is tired of always coughing and I know from the past that it will not work for him.

Many things to try..

has he tried different flavour liquids? different ratios of VG/PG? different strength nicotine?
some have reactions to PG and need to go all VG erm, could even be his inhalation technique.
Some people don't inhale due to the fact that just holding the vapor in the mouth for a few seconds is enough for the mucous membranes there to absorb nicotine, maybe try that as it seems the inhalation to the lungs could cause the cough.

There will be more suggestions probably but that's all I can think of as of now.

Good luck with it and keep us informed of what he's tried and what works, the more we know, the more we can help.

What is the PG/VG ratio he is vaping? It could be that he hasn't got the technique down yet. Vaping is not the same as smoking. It took me some time before I mastered just inhaling into my mouth first and then the lungs. Inhaling straight into the lungs can make someone cough in the beginning.

This exactly^^^^^ is it possible that he is getting too much of a throat hit from vaping? What is the pg/vg and how much nicotine?

Your husband is inhaling too much, too quickly. Next time he tries to vape, instruct him not to hit it like a cigarette, but instead, lightly suck in like a straw.

Every smoker I have ever let try my apv, tries to hit it like a cig and coughs like mad. It's pretty common.

yep, funny thing is some smokers are like "why would i have to change the way i inhale? this is nothing like smoking"

I'm willing to bet this is hubby's major issue ... every smoker I've introduced to vaping always cough until they get the hang of the "vaping draw" as opposed to the "smoking draw". I can easily recall how I used to smoke—hard drags, pulled deep—and even after 18 months of vaping I'll still cough up a lung if I try that "hard drag" technique on my PV. The reason smokers drag that way is because they're trying to get the coal to glow and burn brightly (which, in a cigarette, is how a satisfactory volume of smoke is produced) ... as soon as they realize that there is no need to drag hard, they get into the proper vaping rhythm and all is well ... :)

This is so true. I tried to convert a friend who smoked more than me. When he would take a hit he would cough like crazy and start gaging. I switched him to all VG juices and that helped some but he had to learn how to inhale correctly. When he learned to not draw it all into his lungs right away, it was much better. Now he is even able to vape juices with a 50/50 PG/VG ratio. It was all in the technique.

Let him know that it takes time to get his technique down but it is well worth it!!

Good Luck!!

I agree that the nicotine level is probably the culprit. Most new vapors I have talked to tend to want more nicotine in their vaporizer to start thinking that it won't have as much of an effect as smoking analogs. The fact is it will be the same or more effect delivering nicotine in my opinion, so you might go with a lower level.

PG / VG level I think has less to do with it. Although PG is more harsh and flavors are more intense, the symptoms of using high PG ratio's is usually a sore throat over time, (day's or a week's) and not a instant gag or cough reflex.

IMHO

I agree with the above mentioned. My friend never smoked and is now vaping at 6mg strength nicotine. She tried vaping my 18mg strength nicotine and instantly started coughing. She's tried on several different occasions with other friends at higher strengths as well and always coughs.

I believe it's the nicotine strength. The higher the mg the more "throat hit" your going to feel. Try the lowest strength nicotine you can find which is usually 6mg and let him try that. :)

Good luck!

Keep in mind these variables:

Pulling too hard may cause the device (carto/clearo/etc) to not wick the juice fast enough.
The carto/clearo/etc. ohms and voltage of your battery is very important, so do some research in this forum to appropriate voltage for the ohms in your delivery device.
Never, ever, let your delivery device run down to almost dry. Refill it when it's at least 1/3 of the tank full. This will help in your juice not gunking up the coils and burning the wick faster.

As stated before, inhalation technique is very important. I used to inhale into my lungs and exhale through my mouth, now I inhale into my mouth and exhale through my nose. Very little if any goes into the lungs.

Vaping is not the same as smoking.
