My husband quit smoking cigs 2 years ago, but still uses nicotine in the form of gum or nicotine inhalers. After seeing me use mine all week, he asked me to get him a PV last night. Not sure if I should since he's not a smoker anymore. He says it's cheaper than the gum and inhalers and he's jealous of my vapor rings. He definitely wouldn't go back to smoking since I've been smoking the past year and he has never even bummed one. What do you think?

This is a difficult setup, you are presenting here... I would never presume to know what is best for someone, or how exactly this should be treated in your family (is he willing to make an informed decision, are you making it, are you able to veto his decision, etc.) So, to make an informed decision one needs to learn more about what is known about vaping, and the ECF abounds in information on this topic.

Briefly, there is no known health hazard from vaping, but there are no long term studies that establish the exact level of safety. There are no concerns about the "vehicles" used - glycerin and propylene glycol. There are arguments made that continued exposure to nicotine alone might be harmful, and anti-smoking campaigners make this a "hot topic", but scientific data is lacking and to date we only know that these risks are on par with caffeine use. There are some concerns as to the absolute safety of flavorings used.

He is not really an exception - studies do find that off label use of nicotine replacement - i.e. non-FDA approved use of gum / patch / inhalers for extended, even indefinite periods - is a common occurrence. There is an ongoing debate in the medical community as to whether or not this is "safe" and "desirable". To a certain extent, the "lack of data" as to the safety of prolonged exposure to nicotine replacement is strikingly similar to the same situation relating to vaping.

I actually had this situation come up while working in an ecig retail store. A young couple came in to buy an ecig for the guy as he was a smoker. His girlfriend then asked me if I thought one would work for her. She had quit smoking 2 years prior and was still using the gum.

I did not recommend it as she had already kicked the most difficult part of the addiction ie, the hand to mouth action, inhale and exhale habit. My concern was that she would re-associate the action with the nicotine addiction. After she thought about it, she agreed.

I did tell her, however, that if she felt she was going to buy a pack of smokes, to come see me and I'd set her up with an e-cig.

If your husband really enjoyed smoking and only quit for health reasons or uses nicotine for medicinal reasons as some people do, then I don't really see any harm in it except that inhaling nothing is still better than inhaling something and if he's kicked that part, I'd think it would be better to stay off it.

Overall, he's a grown man and if he wants to vape, let him vape, but I would talk over some of these points with him and make sure he's certain on his decision first.

This is a hard one, like a previous poster has said, he has kicked the hardest part of the hand to mouth association but he is an adult, I would point him here and advise him to read up himself and allow him to make an informed decision on his own findings. I would worry that he may be pushed back to analogues (all it takes for some is a bad day with a dead battery).

I can not tell you or your husband what do do, just to point some facts:

- One of the advantages of e-cigs is that you can vape with or without nicotine or you can regulate the level of it.

In other words, one can continue to do the same gestures as before with zero nicotine... this can help to the quit nicotine addiction, while entertaining yourself with a zero level and some nice flavour.

If he still has a nicotine addiction (seems to be the case), he can vape with a low level (residual level) just to keep the habbit without the health problems of regular cigs.

Well, it is his decision in the end...

With an ecig, you can vape lower and lower strengths and wean yourself completely, if that's your objective.

Vaping is possibly better for you than Snus and probably cheaper than buying nicotine gum and lozenges or nicotine inhalers that are pharma products. If he can find a juice for a daily vape that he likes, it will likely be cheaper and more enjoyable than chewing gum or Snus.

What would it really likely hurt?

If you both are confident it would not rekindle an analog habit, worse case is you have a back-up.

My wife been battling anorexia since childhood. I gave her one of my ego setups to try vaping flavors with zero nic for a while to see if 'maybe' it might curb her sweet tooth/guilt after feelings.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for her, and worse case was I had some zero nic flavors to play DIY with. BUT it was worth a shot for the obvious health reasons.

Thanks for the replies... I ordered him one of these KGO vision cartomizer kits since that's the setup I've been using so worst case scenario is I have some spares. I'd been wanting a black battery anyway since I'm not always in a "pink mood" and my kit is pink. And now I'll have a spare charger too. I also ordered an ounce of 6 mg unflavored 50/50 for him. For some odd reason he's not interested in flavors and thinks the flavors I've been vaping are "nasty". He said maybe he'd like menthol so I ordered some drops that can add a "tingle" if desired. He usually only chews 3 to 4 pieces of 2 mg gum a day so he thought 6 mg would be best. I was smoking a pack a day and I've been vaping 12 mg in the morning and 6 at night and it works for me.

And just to clarify, yes he's a grown man and can make his own decisions... But he knows I've been researching it and hanging out on this forum so he left the decision up to me. A definite bonus, if he sticks with vaping... those tiny nicotine inhaler cartridges and chewed pieces of gum (he would save them for some reason lol) won't be all over the place anymore. We have a toddler and pets and that always made me nervous and they'd always end up in the washing machine too.

My only concern is that he ends up taking in more nicotine than before, but I think if he limits himself about 1.5 ml a day (one cartomizer full) it'll be fine.

TMI.

But then make sure he doesn't leave liquid everywhere. Better yet don't let him get to the liquid, fill the stuff for him. Jeez...

TMI? I didn't tell you about our bathroom habits or sex life... lol. I probably will end up filling them for him so I don't have to nag him about locking it up tho.

It's generally accepted that ecigs deliver only about 10% to 30% of the nicotine you get from smoking an average cigarette. It's the reason we vape like fiends and don't get dizzy. You can also drop the nic level in your juices over time and work down to nothing if you want to.
