Some people are able to give up smoking altogether when they start vaping, while others do both for a while. It really comes down to the individual. A popular saying is don't worry about counting the number of cigarettes you smoke, count the number that you don't smoke.

I quit cold turkey from 30+ years of smoking a pack a day the day I consciously made the decision to really attempt to switch and started using the blu Plus+ tanks. I've since moved up to more powerful mods and tanks and dropped my nicotine from 24 mg down to 6 mg. I'm two weeks shy of being off of cigs for 5 months. About once or twice a week, or if I get a little stressed, I will get that little voice in my head telling me that I should pick up a cigarette and smoke for old times sake. I just ignore that voice, pick up my mod and vape away and soon the voice goes away.
:) Wow, congratulations on quitting!! I have been wanting to quit for some time now. I have finally taken the steps to make it a reality. After all of the advice and ideas from this bit of time here, I am more than positive that I am heading in the right direction. Thank you for taking the time to share your story with me. I cannot wait until I can have one of those last cigarette things on my post :D It's gonna happen, I know it. This will be the best decision I will ever make. I am sure I will be reaching out with a ton more questions soon. Thank you so much for you input. Now I have to figure out the rest of this forum, since I am officially a full member now :p

Good luck with quitting Vannie! This is an awesome place for advice, as you might have noticed :). For what its worth, my sister has done much much better with her anxiety issues after taking up vaping. Getting her nicotine fix in a reliable way without freezing her .... off in the winter didn't hurt either. Once again, best of luck to you.
Thank you :) Yes, I have been getting some great advice and support. I am so glad I signed up for this. Thanks for telling me about your sister. I am glad to hear she is doing well. I believe I am going to do just fine with this now for sure. It will be nice to not have to freeze while trying to get a bit of relaxation. It is kind of hard to relax when you're shivering :D Thank you again, I look forward to communicating with everyone often :) I hope you are well. Thank you so much for adding more reassurance to my journey :D

Vannie,

Nice to meet you, we're all glad you decided to stop smoking. Vaping will allow you to STOP smoking.

I smoked for forty years, with the right equipment, proper nicotine, good juice, and some will power, it's easier than most people think. I was stunned...started with 24mg nicotine and tobacco flavors, but quickly changed juice to tasty types (fruit, bakery, etc). Now I vape 12mg nicotine and haven't had a coffin nail in over six months, nor have the slightest desire for a smoke, I'm vaping much less now too.

Good luck with your journey, we're all in this together......:)

Welcome Vannie I am another newbie here too, wonderful place. I was really worried about overdoing the nicotine when I started too.. Since the vaper never burned away, how would i know when to stop, but it's true you get a feel for it. My local store first suggested 18mg but it made me cough like crazy and I was so dissapointed but then I tried 12 and i could enjoy it. That was before i found this great place too.

I've been on the 12 mg for a few months, going to 6 in another month or so. Going through about 4ml a day and feeling great.

As so many have said, enjoy it, do lots of reseArch and listen to your body. And enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Hello Vannie and welcome to the ECF gang. You, have come to the right place for support.
I, smoked for 36 years the last 10+ was 2.5 to 3 packs per day. My Dr. suggested vaping because I had a severe upper respiratory infection that had been hanging on for months. He, even offered to buy my first set up. I, declined his offer and went back to work. While on a smoke break that same afternoon a co-worker came out with her new ego twist and protank 2 mini. After a little chit chat she offered it for me to try. I, was shocked and thought this might work. This thought coming from the person that always answered my Doctors nagging with...Doc I love a cigarette and I've never smoked one that I didn't want or like. I, smoked my last cigarette that day. I, walked in the vape store a smoker and out a vapor. Not even a sneak puff since 6:45 pm on Dec.6, 2013. I, have not had any respiratory problems, not even the sniffles since and I can climb flights of stairs without gasping, before 1 flight was a chore.
Vannie you can do it!!! Enjoy your vape journey!!! Everybody is here to help!!!

The best thing to do is if you have a store near you that has a tasting bar where you can sample different flavors, definitely take advantage of it. Go try out a bunch of different flavors to find which ones best suits you. The better the juice will taste to you, the more you will want to vape it and not smoke. I was a menthol smoker my entire life and when I first started vaping, I figured that I would only want menthol juices to most closely replicate what I got from smoking. Not long after I started buying juices did I realize that menthol juices are not very much like menthol cigarettes....they tend to be way too strong or way too sweet. Once I started opening myself up to different flavors outside of the menthol/mint profile, I found myself leaning heavily towards fruity juices. I had already bought a ton of menthol juices that I now no longer liked. I ended up pretty much giving away all that juice I had originally purchased.

And when you do find a juice that you think you will like, buy a small bottle and take it home and try it. The smallest bottle will usually be 10 or 15 ml. The tester juices in the store is typically 0 mg nicotine and when you buy the same juice with nicotine in it, it will taste different. Also, what you may think you like after a few puffs in the store, you might find you might not like it as much if you have to vape an entire tankful at home. If you have vaped half of the bottle and find that you still like the taste, then you can go searching online for that brand but in larger sizes, like 30 ml or even 120 ml. The "premium", "national" brands that you can find in the store will typically be available online at a slightly lower price. This will be the more expensive route to go. You can get cheaper from online stores that mix their own juice (i.e. ITC Vapes, Mt. Baker Vapor, Vape Wild, etc.). Juices from them can run half the price or even less compared to the "name" brands like Five Pawns, etc. and they will be available in a greater variety of nicotine strengths, and PG/VG ratios as they are custom mixed when you order it. The downside to freshly mixed juice is that many times the juice may need steeping, as much as a couple of weeks or even a month, much like letting wine age. If the juice needs steeping, it will smell and taste like perfume or chemicals. So if you go that route, plan on allowing for that steep time.

As for gear like mods and tanks, only you can decide what you are comfortable in using. It doesn't make sense for you to get a 150 watt box mod with a subohm tank or a dripper if you are not comfortable carrying it around or being seen using it. But it definitely a smart move to have an extra tank and/or an extra battery that you can use while the other one is charging. Having extra tanks allows you to have different juices loaded up and ready to vape so you can switch your flavors around. I have six tanks loaded with six different juices and I will vape all six during the course of a day. Switching up flavors will also help avoid getting vaper's tongue. Vaper's tongue is when your taste buds get overloaded from one flavor and you end up losing your sense of taste. This usually happens within the first month. When I got vaper's tongue, it didn't matter what juice I was vaping, they all tasted the same to me. It took about 2-3 weeks for my sense of taste to come back.

Hello fellow vapers :) I am really new to vaping. I just bought my first device, this past weekend. I want so badly to quit smoking traditional cigarettes. I have sooo many questions though. While I have been doing some research, I continue to find different answers to the same questions. I just stumbled onto this sight, and noticed some long time members. I take it that you have some experience on the matter  I don't know what is best for me to try. I bought a kangertech pen, and two flavored juices for it. I seem to have little red bumps popping up in random places. Is this a reaction to the juices? I have read a lot about people having a reaction to the PG, but am not sure if this is what the reaction looks like. I don't want to give this up, I want to give up the cigarettes.
I am looking forward to conversing with many of you on this forum. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated :)
It could very well be an reaction to PG. many people have this reaction and as a result switch to higher VG juices.

Hello :) Thank you for replying. Should I completely quit regular cigarettes while vaping? I really have no clue what I am doing here. I just know I don't want to smoke cigarettes anymore, and it's nuts to pretend I can do that easily. This is why I joined this site. I want tot have as much information as I can, so I can be and feel safe in doing so.
I backed off of mine slowly. I kept up my regular breaks, morning lunch dinner and bedtime, and replaced the rest inbetween with my Vape pen. It worked well for me, and before I knew it, I couldn't stand the taste of my stinkys, and was using my Vape pen instead.

Vannie,

Its nice to meet you also :) WOW, Congratulations on quitting! 40 years is such a long time to just walk away. Your story, and others like yours, inspire me and let me know it's possible. I don't have much experience with vaping at all. My friend came to visit me, and pulled her pen out. I decided to try it and see what it was like. The very first time I tried it, I thought WOW this could work! I have been wanting to quit smoking for a long while now. Not to mention, my doctor harps on me every time I see him. I understand why, and that I really should quit. However, his words alone don't make it that easy. In fact, I started smoking more because of his yapping in my ear. Coming here has been the best thing I have done in some time. I have gotten such great advice, and have heard the greatest of stories. I like it here ;)
I finally broke down and bought a pen, this past week-end. I bought 2 bottles of juice to try out. The nicotine level, is 12 mg. I have wanted to get started vaping since I got it. I just wanted more information on the affects, to be safe. I really believe this is the answer to my wanting to quit. Now that I have gotten so much information from this forum, I am feeling more and more comfortable. I cannot wait until I can say, it's been months since I have had a cigarette. My hope is that once I really get into vaping, I also will not have the urge to have a cigarette. I quit in the past for 9 months. I still can't figure out why on earth I ever started again. I do know, I loved being able to say, I DON'T SMOKE! I look forward to being able to say that again, and remain a quitter! Thank you for sharing your story with me :)

Hi Robert :) This is my plan as well. I have been backing off slowly with the regular cigs. I figure changing my normal everyday habits, will help a lot in making this work. I started really working on this, this week. I used to wake up and have 4-5 cigarettes right off the bat. As the day went on, I didn't smoke as much. I guess I was making up for what I thought I had missed while sleeping. For the past 3 days, I have only had one when waking up. Then I space them out. I also had the habit of smoking after I eat, that is already done :) Now I do something else after eating, to get my mind off of the cigs. I think this is the best way to prepare myself for the difference. During these times, I have not vaped much. I wanted to get more information before I went all in. I only joined this forum last night, and I already feel so much better about my decision. I have gotten a lot of needed information and advice. The stories I have read, are completely AWESOME! I look forward to becoming a non-smoker, and getting to know you all better. Congrats on quitting :)

Hello :) Congratulations on quitting! Yes, I have noticed how nice people are here. So many have reached out and helped me with advice and help with my questions. This is a great place. I am looking forward to learning so much more from everyone here :) Since you brought up asking questions, I have one. How on earth do we clean the pens? I have the Kangertech pen. Right now I have some Monkey juice in the tank. I want to switch over to some swedish fish. Is there a way to actually clean the tanks? Thank you for welcoming me :) It's nice to meet you, and I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Wow, Thank you so much for all this information. It really helps a lot for someone who knows nothing about vaping. All I do know for sure, is I wanna quit smoking. I have had enough of everything that comes along with it. I have been excited to vape, and scared at the same time. People like you have helped ease my mind, and for that I thank you :)
I am starting out with the Kangertech pen. So far, I love it. I have only tried it a hand-full of times so far, because of my concerns. Each day, and each read on here is bringing me closer to full vaping. I suffer from anxiety, so everything new is scarey to me. My mind is becoming more and more at ease.
I taste a few different oils, at the shop where I bought my set up. I settled on, Swedish Fish, and Monkey Business (banana) to start with. They both taste pretty good to me so far. I am leaning toward the Swedish fish a little more than the other, but really do enjoy both flavors. Now that I know a lot more about what I am doing, I will be trying out different flavors. I started out with 12 mg of Nicotine. My goal is to reach 0. I know this will take time, but I see how possible it is and it feels good to know, it can be done. Thank you so much for all the information you have provided. I know it will all help me along my way. I look forward to talking with you more often. I hope you're having a great day. Happy Vaping ;)

Hi Vannie, I also suffer from anxiety, depression, and other things. When my vape equipment first arrived, I was so confused by it and afraid of it that I didn't touch it for over a week.

Then I did, and like you, I thought, this could work! I smoked for the first few days, then I thought - I don't really have to smoke if I just think about it and try not to and vape instead. That was in March. Since March 19th I've had 6 cigarettes and none in the past several weeks. I chain smoked for 41 years. I had to quit because I have COPD. If it hadn't been for vaping, I would not have been able to.

The red marks could be due to allergies or anything. If they don't go away, you might want to see your doctor, but I don't think they'd be related to vaping unless it's some very rare allergy to a flavoring.

I vape 50/50 VG and PG. I don't have a problem with PG as far as I know, but VG can give me a "coated" feeling in my sinuses and chest. Still, it's a lot better than what cigarettes were doing to me.

I hope you will enjoy your vaping journey and find flavors you love.

To clean the tank, rinse under warm water and let dry. This is one reason it's good to have back up vape equipment. If you have vodka in the house, you can also soak the tank in vodka to help get rid of the old flavor, and then after a few hours you can rinse it in warm water and let dry.

Hello, and Thank you :) This is the first comment I have read, about a doctor recommending vaping. This makes me feel even better about doing it. I am not sure what my doctor will say about it. I do however know, he harps on me about quitting smoking every time I see him. He may like this idea seeing how it's the only thing that I seem to be leading toward, in a way for quitting. I just bought my pen over this past week-end, and though I haven't vaped more than a handful of times, I already love it. I do believe I will be vaping a lot more from here on out. I had a lot of questions, and most have been answered just being here for under 24 hours. Congratulations on quitting, I can't wait to join you completely. I don't even really "enjoy" a cigarette anymore. This is why I don't understand why I continue. I guess it's just the habit of doing so that keeps me there. I do however, enjoy every hit I take from my pen. The taste is so much better, and I feel like I do get what I feel I "need" from a cigarette. I totally feel that this is the answer to my wanting to quit.
Its funny how people here seem to answer questions before I remember to even ask. I was wondering about the breathing part of it all. I see people that vape for the biggest clouds. I am amazed at some of the intake of vapor people have. It's very reassuring to me, that you haven't had any respiratory problems since starting to vape. Just another worry gone. I know things work different for different people, but it still helps to know vaping does not pose a bigger problem. Especially seeing how you had some problems before vaping, and they are gone. I haven't had many respiratory problems in the past, and for that I am very thankful. I do want to quit smoking, before I start having such problems. I am glad to know you have successfully quit smoking, I love reading that. Stories like yours, makes me feel more at ease in knowing it is so possible. I don't and have never smoked near as much as you. Knowing you are doing so, makes me see just how possible it is to say goodbye to the nasties :) Thank you for welcoming me here. I look forward to taking in as much as I can, from all of you here!

Hello Puff2K :) It's very nice to meet you! I also have been afraid to touch my pen, though my curiosity has gotten the best of me, and I have tried it here and there. I notice that each time I try it, I like it more and more, and cannot stand the taste of a regular cigarette. My anxiety has held me back from going full force with vaping. Since you suffer from the same, I know you understand. Reading this comment made me smile. I hate to hear of someone else suffering the way I do, but it helps to know I am not alone in it. So far, I have tried 50/50 also. I am not sure what the bumps are from, but am now believing it may not have anything to do with vaping. It could just be from the things I have read about reactions to the juices. My mind seems to play many tricks on me, and I always fall for them. For the past two days, I have not noticed any more of them. I have been trying my pen a little more also, so I think you're right on this. I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this site. My concerns are lessening more and more with every comment on this thread :) I have a few people watching me here at home, to see how I do with it. I don't mind being the guinea pig for this. They have all said if it works for me, they are gonna try it. My mother also suffers from COPD, and is a chain smoker. I would love to see her put the cigarettes down for good. I continue to tell her about every success story I read, with people that have smoked 30-40+ years. She thinks it is impossible to quit now, and sharing these stories will hopefully open her mind to knowing better. Thank you for sharing your story with me, and for welcoming me here :) Congratulations on quitting! I am so glad to know you are feeling much better.
I was hoping it was that easy to clean the tanks. I just wasn't sure on how, so thank you for that information. Makes me feel better to know it can actually be cleaned, rather than just adding and getting yucky. That was a very disturbing thought for me. Luckily, my starter kit came with two pens. I think I will be vaping a lot more today, than yesterday. Again, thank you so much for the information you have provided :) I hope you enjoy your day, happy vaping!!

Hello madangus, and thank you! This is a great place to be. I have enjoyed every second I have been here. So many helpful people hanging around here. I started with 12 mg of nicotine. My guess is that I will figure out when to lessen, as I go along. I do eventually want to be at 0, but don't plan to be there in a matter of days. It took a while to become addicted to smoking, so I know I will have to give it time to go away. Have you completely quit smoking cigarettes? I am soooo eager to never touch one again. The more I read, the easier it seems. I am glad you have found this place, to help you out. I feel lucky to have reached this site :)

After the tank is mostly empty, I'd dump it out and rinse it out then let it dry. You can either change out the coil heads or clean them; if they're not too gunked up you can clean them with water and then dry burn them. If they're pretty gunked up you can let them soak in pure grain alcohol (nnot rubbing alcohol. Vodka) overnight and then let em dry and they should be good. If all of that doesn't work, just replace the coil.

Cleaning the tanks are very simple. There are a couple of ways you can go about it. If you absolutely want to go with a clean switch (where you change to a different flavor and not have the previous flavor, empty the tank, remove the coil and then rinse the tank out well with warm water. You can then switch out the old coil with a new coil and then let the old coil soak overnight in a little vodka.

For me, I don't mind the old and new flavor mixing for a bit (it takes about 0.5-1.0 ml of vaping before the old flavor totally goes away) and this is the process I use if I want to stick with the same tank. So if I have some juice left in the tank, I either pour the remainder back into the bottle or pour the remainder down into the sink. I then rinse the tank out well in warm water. I shake out the water as best as I can out of the tank and wipe down the outside. I will thread a little tissue into the tank to soak up as much left over water as possible. For the tank bottom with the coil on it, I unscrew the coil and set it aside. Rinse out the tank bottom under warm water and then dry that off as well as possible. I then take a paper towel and wrap it around the coil, soaking up as much of the old juice as possible. I then screw the coil back onto the bottom hardware, fill the tank with the new juice and then reassemble the tank and start vaping away. Since I haven't changed the coil or cleaned it, it will still have some remnants of the old juice in it but after a few minutes of vaping, the old juice will be gone and you will only taste the new juice.
