I agree with all of the suggestions you've received about taking members' anecdotes about personal experiences with a grain of salt. They are just that: personal experiences. Unfortunately, the vaping learning curve is unavoidable and it takes a bit of trial and error to find out what works for you.
My personal opinion: A ProVari is a wonderful device. It's well made, has a warranty, etc. It is also just a tube that holds batteries. You will not have a better vaping experience with a ProVari over any other VV mod until you get a good idea of what delivery systems you like. Twists and Spinners are a great way to start, and you will need back-up anyway, so you haven't wasted anything (I don't think any of the money I spent on vaping was wasted, since I don't smoke anymore, but that's how I look at it).
Twists/Spinners give a good introduction to variable voltage without spending tons of money. If you stick with authentic Joyetech and Vision you shouldn't have any problems. At this moment, I have two 1000mAh Twists I'm vaping back and forth because they have different tanks on them - they are nice, consistent devices. I when I read people bemoaning about the money they wasted before getting a ProVari it often seems they have bought several "higher end" mods that either didn't perform well or broke down. In that case, they have spent hundreds and were still dissatisfied.
