I've been in competitive athletic shape most of my life - working out, running, hockey, etc...has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember...yes - even while smoking.

Almost a year ago - my life got so busy that I just stopped doing it. GF got laid off so I started my own business in addition to my day job, to keep the family going...3 kids, house...etc etc...I just lost touch with my health completely.

Now that I've been vaping and GF has started working again, I'm really excited to see what it feels like to run again - this time without being a smoker! I'm starting in the morning.

Do any of you have similar stories? How did you feel to become active again after quitting - or ...if you never stopped being active, how did it feel to be so without black lungs?

I've been trying to get back into shape for a while, and I noticed I'm having a much easier time with high intensity workouts since I stopped smoking.

I've never been able to run worth a darn, and I think a lot of that has to do with my lungs being rather worthless. I'm planning on working on C25k in the spring to see if I may fare a bit better now.

I hear ya!

I'm cig free for over 4 years now..

Have been playing pickup hockey twice a week now for 3 years and I run every work day at lunch (going for 30 miles this week for the first time). It feels great to wrap up a hard core week of exercise and work and playing with kids and...well, you know lol

If you did it while smoking, you're really going to tear it up this time around!

Have fun.

I wouldn't call myself a "runner" really - I've done a few 5Ks for fun, but I really do just do it for the cardiovascular benefits...and because I enjoy it.

I've heard nothing but good things about C25k. Give it a shot!

My dog’s favorite new thing since I can run again is to have me toss the Frisbee as far as I can down the hill. While he’s getting it I have to sprint around the house, he races back and follows me, and see if I can beat him back to the starting point. Wish it wore him out as much as it does me after 15 circuits.

ETA It is far easier to get back into shape than I thought it would be and when you get winded there is no hacking cough. Pretty darn cool. :)

I'd be very interested to follow your progress on this. Say at 30 days, 60 days, 90 days.
Especially if you are doing a repeated exercise like a 5k or something.
Be a guinea pig will you?

I'd love to keep track here, if anyone is interested in following along - it can only be helpful for me to feel accountable. :) I won't spam every day...but I'll probably do it weekly to keep it on my brain.

I'm going to start tomorrow with 3 miles at an easy pace so I don't kill myself. :)

Maybe I'll start a new thread so anyone who wants to can follow along and contribute.

How long since you quit? I assume I will experience some of that too!

I realized last night that I could take a really deep breath without any tightness like I am so used to - and decided it was time to get back on the wagon! I used to feel like a machine - I can't imagine how I'll feel if I'm in that kind of shape as a non-smoker.

I'll start a new thread tomorrow if I survive!

I quit 8 months ago. 2 PAD for 40+ years. I was probably much like Agavehound but it took me longer to get around to the full out running (this is a full tilt sprint over, essentially, an obstacle course in the woods) because of bad knees that needed to be strengthened before jumping logs and doing hills. Not too shabby for my age. :)

Well - As I expected, I pretty much felt like I was going to die! ...and I'm sure I'll be sore for the next few days...Ibuprofen is on the ready.

I did 3.1 miles (5K, roughly)

Warmed up for 3 minutes at 5mph, then bumped it up incrementally until I hit 6.5mph at 25 minutes until I finished the run at approximately 31 minutes.

My goal is 25 minutes. Based on my experience, I should be able to hit that in a few weeks. I tend to push myself really hard.

I'll get more specific in the future with my times and pace, and in the new thread, but this morning I was just concentrating on not dying.

Yea I hate running even after I quit smoking! I've done one 5 mile run. One. Will not do again lol!

However, since quitting, I started riding my bike to work. It's 12.5 miles each way. And it's VERY hilly out here :). There's no way I could have done that if I was still a smoker.

Good luck to you! I'll be watching the updates!

The bike riding is done for the season as it's pretty cold out here. Now it's time to fatten up for winter lol! I'm off to a good start :)
