You could make something yourself if you have the skills to make something that'll work and last, but the average person here doesn't have those skills. The APC pack from Fry's is pretty worth it even if you DO have the skills, I think. 15 bucks for a good solid ready-made device from a reputable company.

And, being Li-Ion at 10Wh, it'll last much longer than those 2600mAh ni-mh batteries.

Plus if it goes bad in the first year you have a warranty with APC.. so I would go with the $14.99 device with a 1 year warranty in my opinion. I would love to be technically minded like some of you guys, but I went to school for Mass Communications. The most technical thing I had to learn was how to change a fuse out on a 25 channel mixer board. Ohh well maybe in my next life.

I've actually made a nimh battery pack for a 901 before, with a spent battery connector and casing, and i still bought the white battery pack w/ black leather sleeve off ebay because i don't feel like making one.
I even have the rechargeable aa's, i just use them in my remote for the television now.

In other news, i have an rn4072 w usb, and i am definitely having a lot of, "Wow that was a lot of vapor" moments.

wrong it will not last much long at all.. mostly the figures on these packs are like most chinese figures pure nonesense.. the packs have rubbish batteries in them that do not have the claimed capacity..

but the NiMh cells at 2500 mah work out at 12 watt hour anyways.. you could use 3000 mah ones that would be 14.4 watt hours..

now the average 130 mah 901 e cig battery works out at 0.52 watt hours..

so the 3000 NiMh packs would have 27.6 times the run time of the normal 901 battery.. if that aint long enough nothing is..

trog

ps.. all i am saying is what is needed to power an e cig.. plus how cheaply something can be made with a modicum of skills.. me i aint into wires period.. so none of the wired options cut the mustard for me..

Before all the recent hype on the usb ecigs...when I was (frantically!) trying to figure out how to power mine without the computer...I bought one of those cheap 4aa battery usb adapters. Well, for reasons I understand now, it didn't work with the 4 alkaline batts I had on hand so someone suggested trying the rechargeable batts.

Last week, while in walmart, I picked up an energizer charger, which claims to charge nimh batts in 15 minutes. I also picked up an 8 pack of 2450 mah rechargeable aa batts. I haven't opened anything yet.

I prefer regular batts to the battery packs...and don't want anything that takes all night to recharge.

So my queestion...would you say the power in the batts I bought are better...or at least comparable to the battery packs they are talking about here? Would like to know before I open and start using it.

BTW...wish I could make that mod you mentioned below....but I really have no clue

Lu what they don't tell you however, is that fast charging Ni-MH trashes the battery life.

This is why I went with Powerex batteries (the best) & recharger kit, which does it slower at 3 hours but these things last almost forever :thumb:

Really??? No, they don't say that ....lol

Powerex batteries and recharger? I have never seen that. I could probably do 3 hours....just not overnight (although 15 minutes sounded even better :D)

What mah are they stack? Have you used them yet with a usb ecig?

USB e cig leads have voltage or current limiters built into them.. with ones like the janty with a battery in line the battery does this..

the ones that dont have the battery inline have the current restricter somewhere else..

the e cig heater coil has a resistance based on it being fed between 3.5 and 4 volts.. a PC USB socket puts out 5 volts.. its maximum rating is 500 ma.. feeding five volts straight from the USB socket to the e cig atomizer will wreck the PC..

its better to use a USB power hub..

charging a lithium cell too quickly will wreck it.. something that takes two hours is good.. something that takes twenty minutes is bad...

lithium ion battery technology is fragile technology it dosnt like being abused.. the cell is abused when its discharged no sense in adding to the abuse with the charge..

the term is "C" one C equals a one hour charge or a one hour discharge..

C is the capacity of the battery.. one C would be to discharge the battery at a one hour rate.. or charge the battery at a one hour rate..

a normal e cig battery gets short bursts of up to six C discharge every time a puff is taken which is why they die so quickly..

a continuous on situation would discharge a normal e cig battery in about eight minutes..

e cig batteries aint happy bunnies and for a very good reason.. they are literally being flogged to a quick death.. even the so called better ones..

just some e cig lithium ion battery facts.. if any manufacturer wished to dispute my facts they are free to do so.. i am 100% sure none will..

I have a bunch of 1000 mah tripple-A's. They're really, really good. More expensive than the cheap Chinese stuff to be sure, but man quality really makes a difference.

Maha PowerEX 1000 mAH AAA Rechargeable NiMH Rechargeable Batteries

I haven't used them on a mod yet, but I might down the road once I have a bunch of dead parts to play with :)

Okay you guys below. I can't understand how these would work unless it's with a special e-cig. Which one is that please. I'd like to know asap if possible. I am having an awful nicotine fit waiting for my one battery to charge since the other pooped out and this one only lasts a couple hours!!!!

Bug

There's a device available called a "USB passthrough battery" (even though it's not actually a battery... or a passthrough). It's a device that screws on to your e-cig in place of a battery, and has a wire coming out that goes to a USB port. It lets you power your cig directly from any USB port.

These battery packs we're talking about have a USB port that you can plug that wire into.

Here's an example of one from Puresmoker: PureSmoker.com - Your #1 Source For ECigs, Parts, & Accessories!

Does that mean I have to carry the device around with me too? Or does it charge the battery, you remove it, and go on your merry way? It didn't say or I didn't read enough.

Thanks for your help too!:)

PS: It doesn't do any good if the battery went ka-put. I'' go back to the site and see if I can find out more. Thanks again!!!

No problem :)

You would need to carry around both the battery pack and the USB "passthrough" device. But the USB device is just the size of an ordinary e-cig battery. It even looks identical, except it has a wire coming out that goes to a USB plug. It's really not a hassle to "carry around"... you'd most likely just leave it screwed into your cig, instead of a battery.

I don't know about everyone else, but I have been using the usb passthrough battery and both a battery pack and plugging in.

I find for myself (heavy user) that the battery pack clipped to pocket/waistband, whatever, then with the passthrough plugged into it, that it's not near as inconvenient as worrying about battery charge. I do still use batteries quite a bit though, for those times on the go or when I just don't want the battery pack on me.

For me, it's working best to have a choice of tools, but even with all those things to keep up with, it's so much better than keeping analogs and lighters and ashtrays and etc etc. Not to mention that this is a MUCH lower hassle level than carrying around an oxygen tank with a cannula in your nose and that's where I was headed.

Everyone has to make their own choices based on their lifestyle, habits, smoking preferences and budget, but I am a junky to e-vaping, so I choose them ALL.

Maybe need to go to E-HAB ! ! ! !
