Pictor, there's a jewel in your crown for giving that sweet little baby a better life!
Thanks Lynn, we don't know to this day why we went to get her ...chance magazine ad - and we didn't want a second dog, let alone a tiny one. Somehow we found ourselves travelling down the country, and sat in rush hour traffic we asked each other why. She was supposed to be 'just too small to show', yet once home and able to see her properly, we knew it had just been one of those inexplicable 'fate' things.

Pictor - you gave that baby a good life for 6 years. That's a lot more than many get. You did a good thing.
Never any question that whatever she needed, she would get, but it was a long road. Throughout the pain and discomfort, the one constant was her spirit. She was loving, happy, and totally uncomplaining. Beautiful inside and out to us. Every year she was with us she brought us joy. Coming up 10 years since she went, but we still do get a tear for that brave little soul.

Our dogs bring a lot of joy to our lives especially since the kids are grown.
As my husband once inadvertently said, and it stuck: 'These dogs keep us insane' :)

I refused to go through that again. I stopped fostering. Fast forward to last February and I find I am bringing home a beautiful 1 year old Brindle Boxer. She is a wonder that brings joy into my life every single day.
Ah! Lovely - we had a brindle for over 13 years: Penny. Our boys spent their childhood with her - ridiculously naughty puppy, then wonderful companion to us all.

This was the one that pushed me over the edge on fostering. We tried so hard with this one. We have fostered since but not as much.
This article got published in Toy Breeds magazine back in 2005 also trying to bring awareness about backyard breeders.

Oh Lezlee! ..and this is why, even this morning the sight of Holly's sweet face in this thread (I only look at her photos when I feel brave), and all that I've read now, can reduce me to tears again.
Lil Red and Holly seem to have had the same skin problem. The steroids and infection together weakened her immune system so much, she literally closed down bit by bit over a few weeks.
That last night, I'd decided that even though the vet had been reluctant to give up, she was suffering and needed help. She came to our bed around 4.30am, licked our faces and asked to be down - she died just as the birds began to sing. At lease she went on her terms.

We eagerly bring them into our lives, knowing that they'll likely break our hearts, yet we accept that because of everything they bring. No day is totally desperate with a dog by our side.
A happier photo of the two opposites we now have: Sophie, 68lbs of lovable, huggable joy, and Georgia, half as big again than Holly was, and convinced she's the boss! Both so funny and delightful.

Nothing like a good cry to start the day...

Thank you for doing this!! We don't have dogs because I can not care for them but we get our cats from shelters. All 5 and they are amazing little fur balls.

Sammy is 8 and has been with us 4 years and only this week have I heard her purr. Poor kitty, she went through who knows what before landing at the shelter and losing the sight in one eye and many skin issues due to matting over a year before we could adopt her. And she finally purred! I just thought she didn't have a loud purr motor but she does, and when that started up I thought she was growling at me!

We will never do anything but rescues and shelters for any of our pets unless we have a particular job that needs doing by a well trained and suitable animal like Roxy did and then that trainer will be very scrutinized before we bought an animal!

*hugs all around*

Pictor that just breaks the heart! Good for you for taking that little one in!

Not really, I just wanted to show off the lab that rescued us today. We lost our beloved lab in April to cancer and vowed to never go through that again.

Yay for a rescue! Our beagle of 17 years passed, no way we are getting another...few months later found ourselves at a 'kill shelter'...people can drop animals off in the cage outside :( Higher beings stepped in that day and the shelter was way behind in opening..after a couple hours waiting and seeing two 8 week old siblings being dropped off the cage :( we've been happy for 5 years now :)maxalipuppies.jpg

ps neither them or us saw the inside of the 'kill shelter'

Oh my, we dog lovers don't mean to leave cats out, and I did mean to mention that earlier - they're loved just the same, and need loving homes too! How lovely that Sammy found her purr! That's special :)

I'm pretty sure that even if we'd known the real reason they sold her, we'd have still been drawn to her for some reason. Holly and us were meant to be, and even our older dog was shown love by that little scrap. She was the last loss in 18 months of both dogs, my dad and two more close relatives. We thought disaster and pain would never end.
The sun started to shine again when Sophie literally walloped into our lives - loopy, leggy, growing as we watched, she's been wonderful ever since.

The only dog I have ever paid for is Sentry. The rest have been rescues. Why I paid for Sen is beyond me but I wanted a boxer so so bad and I saw the sign in the pet store for the puppies. I called, thinking I just wanted to go play with some boxer puppies, and came home broke with an AKC registered dog. Lol. I wouldn't take a million dollars for her now, though. My cat I found at waffle king is that makes anyone feel better.
When I got sentry, I was going through a really really tough time. My favorite band is Coheed and Cambria and they had just released their new album. It tells a story about this guy going on a mission to space (a lot more interesting than that, I'm just lazy) and he basically gets stuck and can't get home to his wife. The second album of the double release tells about how he does eventually get back to her but the first song repeats at the end "Who will repair this broken heart?" And the next song is Sentry the Defiant.
My cats name is Krum because she is a KRUM BUM KITTEH! Hehe.

Funny how that happens isn't it. My wife and I had said the same thing several times over the years, then we run across a dog that no one wants (usually too old, behavioral problems, etc.) and end up giving it a home. Presently have one really old Basset Hound and one 3 year old small mixed breed mutt.

:offtopic: Love your avatar, saw that movie years ago at a midnight showing....:)

Congrats on your new fur baby! I love labs, they are such wonderful, friendly dogs. I had two that lived 14 years and loved them so much. Now I've got two golden retrievers and a golden mix that was a rescue. My youngest, which is a purebred retriever is somewhat of a rescue (long story) so I'm all about rescues and adopting from shelters.

I love her name as well.Congrats again and enjoy your new baby!

It's kind of weird, after we lost our last dog and both said "never again", we went about 5 months without the mention of EVER getting another dog. Then, about a month ago, for some reason, I was looking at a lab rescue site and saw a beautiful fox red Dudley lab, it was adopted the next day. My wife, meanwhile, had been cruising the rescue sites at the same time. We went and looked at a few when there was an event at Petco a few weeks ago, then I stumbled onto Ellie, another Dudley Lab on a local lab rescue site.

A Dudley Lab, for those who've never heard of it, is a purebred lab that lacks the black pigmentation around the eyes, mouth, and nose, some sort of regressive gene in one of the parents thing. We'd never heard of it when we got out last dog, and later learned she was a Dudley. They are useless to breeders because they're not up to show standards.

Same for me when I lost my dog. K however was bound and determined to get more cats the week he lost his first cat, Youki. Actually he at first said "cat" but when we went to the shelter they were running an adopt one get one free special so he went nuts. Four cats later and a run to Petsmart to buy three more carriers, pictures taken of us buy the shelter employees, everyone just astonished we would do that, on and on etc. and they ended up charging us for only one cat and gave the rest to us free.

K paid them the full cost anyway as a donation. They were blown away.

I always tell K that this is it, that he's not allowed to become a crazy cat man. And they have a very good life, cat perches in every window, An extra cat box (yes that means six), toys everywhere and food far more expensive than I would get for them...they are our children (I can't have any), and K spoils them rotten.

Ok, guys. It's time to show off my babies. All came to us as older dogs from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Rescue:
They're all adorable! Bella looks quite a little character! :)

Both of mine are boat bums.
This is Sammie
And this is Rosie Waffle Butts
Was that you & Rosie when she was smaller in your earlier avatar Marc?

then I stumbled onto Ellie, another Dudley Lab on a local lab rescue site.
So how was Ellies first night in her new home?

We'd never heard of it when we got out last dog, and later learned she was a Dudley. They are useless to breeders because they're not up to show standards.
Until the two we have now, we always got the one the breeder couldn't show for one reason or another: we called them our 'mis-shapes' - boxer Penny hadn't the white markings, another poodle was too broad in the ribs, another boxer grew bigger than he should have (got him for my Dad), and of course poor Holly was just ignored until we found her.

Pictor the avatar was the day we got her from the rescue. Poor little girl spent the first 6 to 8 months of her life in a crate. The best thing was the first time she walked on grass. She didn't even know what it was and it looked like she was walking on glass. damn silly walk for about a half an hour.

She is doing much better these days, she is a spoiled brat now.

I'd meant to ask you about her back then - you looked really proud holding her in your arms. Now I see why.
That poor little thing we had was kept with 15 others in a conservatory with newspaper on the floor - she was horrified by carpet, never mind her worry on encountering grass. We had that walking on glass thing too! ...and the nervous peering behind the TV for the people!
She'd never had a bowl of food for herself either, and being the smallest, would grab something and run off with it. She'd literally only had enough to stay alive. She kept doing that here for 6 months until it dawned on her that our other dog was never going to take it.

So glad you found Rosie ...in fact I'm so happy for all these dogs and cats that found truly worthy owners!

She is doing much better these days, she is a spoiled brat now.
Good for her! Another that literally fell on her feet! Just look at her...that's a content girl!

Ellie's first night was perfect! She had a long walk, long ride in the car, and a trip to the dog park today.
Brilliant! ...'nother one fallen on her feet! Nice!

She seems to, but not thrilled like some dogs.
Could she think you'd be taking her back? ...perhaps just needs to get used to things.
Took our big one some years to travel well because she'd had motion sickness the day we brought her home - took her a long time to forget that. She prefers the little car to the Honda 4WD though!
