I keep hearing about mods. What exactly are they?

I am new to vaping and the only e-cigs I own are in the shape of regular cigs. I own 2 auto's and one manual 808 from Vapor 4 Life which I am really happy with. Especially the manual with a tank. Very nice vapor production. I am interested in e-cigs that do not look like a cig. The ones that are variable voltage which I heard produce great vapor. I am also wondering what exactly mod's are?

1. Can anyone recommend a decent variable voltage e-cig for around $50?

2. Can anyone recommend a USB 5 volt pass through?

3. What is a mod?

4. What is the difference between 808 and 510? I feel like I am already vested into 808 and it seems as if the E-Cig's that look nothing like a regular cig only come in 510.

5. Does either the 808 or 510 work better than the other?

1. E Power. You would have to buy batteries and a charger

2. Not sure but someone will chime in who knows

3. A mod takes batteries and are not the battery ( I just asked the same thing 2 months ago and received my 1st mod yesterday.

4.The numbers are how the device is threaded

5. I think they are both the same as far as how they work but more mods cartos and atomizers are 510 so it gives you the most options. I started with 808 and did just fine but cant use it's cartos on my new mod. Congrads on making the switch and welcome to the ECF :vapor:

Hi Obscene, I'll try to offer my advice :). For a VV around $50 you can purchase a lavatube or possibly a vv boxmod from madvapes. You may also be able to find something by stalking the classifieds section. Re: 5v passthrough I recommend Saber Touch (Vapor Moon) he makes some great APVs.

Everyone at one point called ecigarettes with changes, enhancements or modifications "mods." Here on the ECF we've adopted the term "APV" Advanced Personal Vaporizer" for these types of ecigs. Mods or APVs can be feeders, ecigs made to take a variety of batteries etc, etc.. basically anything that is not a standard ecig.

510 and 808 are numbers that correlate to the connection from the battery or mod to the atomizer/cartomizer. 510 is a pretty standard type connector and is a bit more versatile than the 808. The 510 connection will allow you to buy carto tanks, different atomizers or cartomizers from pretty much all ecig vendors excluding those who peddle a proprietary carto.

Hope that this helped! Welcome to the ECF!

Hi ObsceneJesster. Well there are many mods available. So we will start with your first question.
1.a. 310Vapers.com | "3VO" EVO v2.1 Variable Voltage Mod - Featured Products | e-Cigarette, eGo, 3VO, cartomizers, atomizers, batteries i have heard good things about this one but have never used it myself. in fact the only vv i have used is one that i personally built but that a whole different adventure. Pbusardo has a full review if you would like all the details specific to that one.
1.b. Variable Voltage Box Mod the most down and dirty boxmod i can think of. Will get you in the door as far as vv and give you some perspective as far as the whole "vv" craze is concerned, now this can also be had in a kit form if you are up for it here Variable Volt Box Mod Kit this and a few pair of batteries and a dual bay charger should be just under your $50 question.
There is certain to be more, I know for sure there is but I cant think of them as I type this so I will leave somone else to pick up at 1.c......
2. Google usb5vpt then if its not your thread pattern(808? right) order an adaptor so that it can be used with your 808 cartos/tank . Something like this PV Adapters
3. A mod is a MODified , in this case, ecig.... most often a battery modification. Like more voltage, or more storage, or more adjustability. A mod is simply a unit which was tailored by somone from it original fit/finish/form factor toward a specific usually performance related goal. Now to be fair there are plenty of us who also mod our units for a cosmetic goal as well.
4. The major first difference is the thread type. 808&510 is usually just refering to the thread pitch/spacing/orientation but also most of the 808 size wise have a bigger capacity aka mAh than their 510 brothers. Also i have heard the 808 is normally a ~3.7v device while most 510 are ~3.5volts.
5. That depends on the user and their personal style. No one could say with any reasonable certainty which device is better for you, unless that person is you, and you have tried them both. This way you can make your own decisions as to which one fits your specific vaping style. On paper and through heresay I would think the 808 would be the nicer PV of the slim units, but I dont own one so I would be of little help there.

I know I'll get pounded for this, but it's better than what might happen if a person is uninformed.

The first thing I did before anything was to read. And read. And read. Not only about mods. About something much more important. BATTERIES. Specifically, Lithium ion batteries. Why? Go to you tube and search for lithium ion explosion. Watch a few.

Put battery university into any web search. Read and learn. Read the stickies on this site about battery safety. Ask questions. I'm still overwhelmed by most of what I'm learning, and more than a little nervous about some of the dangers dealing with so much power. I've decided to take the responsibility to learn all I can, and be as safe as I can while using a mod. That's about the best we can hope for right now. It's not my intention to scare you, just to make you aware, right off the bat, about what can happen.

If you're willing to take responsibility for what might happen, and accept the risks, after informing yourself of them, of course, choose your device, choose the correct batteries for the device, treat them with respect, keep safety to the forefront of your mind and vape on.

I think you'd really benefit from reading some of the stickies-

Beginners E-Cig Tutorial

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/179884-explain-apvs-mods-me-please.html

A lot of people get involved with mods because either they have a difficult time giving up cigarettes with the mini's and need something 'more' or their current pv isn't filling a need they have, like battery life isn't long enough for their lifestyle. Some do it to try something new after they've been vaping for awhile.

Since you say you're happy with your current setup, I'd stick with that. Do a little reading and research and see what you'd like in a pv that your current setup doesn't offer. We have a whole section of the forum devoted to the different types of mods available and new ones are coming out all the time.

This cannot be emphasized enough!! Here's a must-read on rechargeable batteries: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...9007-warning-rechargeable-batteries-mods.html
