Hi. I've been reading here for about a week and I'm totally overwhelmed by all the options. There isn't a bricks and mortar store I can reach to check things out irl, so I'm hoping that if I write about my situation someone will be able to help point me to a good setup. I smoked heavily- 3 packs a day most days- for 30 years. I quit in 2004 because I hated the smell, didn't much like the taste and was sick of the slavery, never being able to enjoy going anywhere if I couldn't smoke, not being able to sit through a movie or dinner, etc. Quitting cigarettes was amazingly easy, using nicotine replacement. I got very depressed and felt horrible though if I dropped the nicotine. With my doctor's approval I came to terms with not worrying about using nicotine, and had six years cigarette free with lozenges. Ironically during those years I developed a severe refractory ulcerative colitis- one of the only diseases *more* common in non-smokers!- and after a year spent mostly in the hospital had my large intestine removed and my GI system rebuilt. Usually that's a cure but it turned out that for me uc was just the first manifestation of what I know now is a hereditary autoimmune disorder. Instead of being all better following the surgery I developed one illness after another. I went from being the only female lifting 100 lbs all day every day in a meat plant to being barely able to carry my purse to the car. My life had always been challenging but became..well.. beyond stressful. Two years ago, after my neighbors started a fire which destroyed my apartment I started smoking again.

Now, I'm adjusting to my surprising life changes and things should be relatively okay, but I have recently been diagnosed with (no surprise I guess, I earned it) COPD. I am bright enough to know that I can *not* smoke. I don't have a big issue with the nicotine as I can get it from the lozenges..but the past couple of months without cigarettes I've felt so lost; I miss the ritual, the hand and mouth activity. Dinner doesn't seem right, coffee doesn't seem right, video gaming which is my passion isn't complete, without smoking. I do realize that it would surely be best that I not inhale anything but the reality is that with an above average IQ I am sneaking out of my apartment smoking Newport Lights and vaping definitely can't be as harmful for me. My pulmonologist mentioned
e-cigs and so here I am. I managed to get a couple of disposable menthol Njoys from a convenience store and they aren't the worst thing in the world; in fact I like the taste and the feel in my hand-but they are kind of hard to drag on and I am sure there's a better choice in many ways! I am on disability now and don't go very far very often so battery life isn't crucial for me. I don't need them to look like cigarettes- in fact I'd probably like something silver or pink or so on. I do think I need something fairly slender, I have issues with nerve damage in my hands and don't imagine a fat-cigar size would work well for me. I'm not super cheap but I definitely don't have a money tree either, so I would like something that's a good value and not an overpriced disposable. I don't want to get into something proprietary, as I don't know what flavors will end up being good for me or how pg/vg might affect me. I'd prefer a manual battery ..I think. I can afford to spend up to 150$ but I *can't* afford to spend it foolishly..and I am so confused now. I've looked at SI's Volt, then Bloog..and the variable voltage of the twist sounds like a great idea-but they look massively fat in pictures..then I saw an ego-dual-coil-tank kit that looked good..but maybe that's heavy and fat.. I'm also lost about what some vendors are actually selling..is the Vapor King Xl a KR808d? etc

At this point the more I read the further I get from knowing what to order or where to order it from. If anyone wise and kind makes sense of this and could point me to a good starting set-up given, I would be so grateful! Thank you =)

A manual battery is the way to go.

As you mentioned, an ego twist is a great way to start. I believe they are 1100mah(correct me if I'm wrong), they aren't necessarily fat but they are long. In your case since you're just starting you can set the voltage around 3.4-3.7 like a normal ego battery and just work your way from there. As for tanks, a lot of people including myself use the vivi novas. If you're worried about size you can go with the mini nova. These tanks are very easy to deal with, especially for beginners.

Your real worry should be on juice and finding something that is going to satisfy you. Do you prefer menthol juices? I deal pretty much with nothing other than menthol, and "Mister E Liquid" has an "Ice Collection" which is nothing but assorted menthol flavors and aren't bad at all and reasonably priced. Everyone is different in what they prefer, so when it comes to juices you are just have to experiment. Try getting smaller sized bottles or sample packs so you can single out what you like and don't.

Check out the vendors section. Most folks start out with EGO kits; Joyetech is good stuff. Do due dilligence and shop around. Everything you need to know is in this forum; READ EVERYTHING!!!
So sorry about yer problems: I do understand. The vendors I have used (a lot of different ones) have never let me down. Don't use an off the wall vendor until yer comfortable with e-cigs. You can get a kit and plenty of juice for under $100.00. Good luck!

WELCOME to ECF!

You can buy eGo Twists in different "mah". What does that mean? Milliamps per hour. How long the battery will hold a charge in simple words. Since you seem to be locked to your computer, I would suggest trying a passthrough which means you have cord out your USB to the ecig and no worries about charging at all! Then buy one you charge as a "to go" unit. 2 is the minimum recommended here as you will always have a backup should something happen to the other. Ego's are 510 threaded, meaning that any 510 thing will screw on the battery. 510 is by far the most widely used and easiest to find things for.

I would not recommend a cig-a-like, you are a pretty strong addict and it may not be enough "umph" for you; they weren't for me. I prefer a battery with "more". Also, some of them are not 510 threaded so watch out for those, you will be stuck with just that connection and limited choices.

Now the delivery system (the "thing" I mentioned above having a 510 connection): a vivi nova and the CE's are inexpensive and you screw them to the battery. Fill them up with the juice and vape!

This is very simplified of course, but it may help you in asking a specific question.

100 mah= 1 hr normal vaping before recharge. Understand if using a variable voltage and vaping at a higher voltage battery life will be diminished.

Cig sized:Volt, Bloog, etc cig sized and battery life is an issue- less common 808 threading/ connection.

eGo Class: eGo fires @ 3.3 volts while the Kgo (same size) fires @ 3.7 volts- both come in 650 and 1100 mah- most popular 510 threading/ connection. Manual batteries.

Mini Variable Volt: 510 threading/ connection. Manual Batteries.
I have issues with nerve damage in my hands and don't imagine a fat-cigar size would work well for me.
Twist comes in 650, 900 and 1000 mah. Dial very narrow/ smooth and not easy to turn. Voltage numbers very hard to read/ invisible.
Vision Spinner comes in 400, 650, 900, 1100 and 1300 mah. Wide knurled voltage dial easy to turn and easy to read voltage markings. 1300 mah is same size as 1000 Twist.
Both variable voltage PVs above fire from 3.3-4.8 volts.
I owned the Twists and have sold them because the dial was hard to turn and I could not clearly see the voltage markings. Awaiting delivery of the Spinner. Also own a Kgo and I LOVE it. Have used the eGo and prefer the Kgo because of the higher voltage.
1300 Vision Spinner- 113mm or ~4.4 inches long; 16MM WIDE, 2MM WIDER THAN A STANDARD EGO
1100 Vision Spinner- 119mm or ~4.75 inches long
1000 Twist- Length 120mm(4.75")/Diameter 14mm

Advantage of the VV- when stressed and need a stronger hit I can easily and quickly dial up the voltage. For an all day vape I can lower it to 3.7-4.0. Also some flavors really shine at high voltage while others at a lower voltage.

If you're looking for a PV that's lower cost over the long haul http://www.crystalclearvaping.com/C...d-30ml-juice-Free-priority-shipping_p_58.html
fires at 3.7 volts and the batteries are separate from the PV meaning when you purchase new batteries the cost would be about $5 per batt. eGo, Kgo, Twist and Spinner batteries are considerably more expensive.

May I just say, being an addict for so long on death sticks my opinion is to AVOID anything that looks or feels like a cig. I use the Ego Twist 1100mah battery with a ego clearomizer aka apollo/rocket. This is so different to a conventional cig it makez you forget quickly about regular cigs.

Many people say great things about the vivi nova that I may consider one in the future.

Hello Laura, this is a great place for info, just keep asking questions. Lots of helpful people here. I smoked for 42 years till 18 days ago when I walked into a nearby vape shop. I know, I'm lucky to have a store near me. I bought 2 Ego-T 650mah and several Nova tanks, large & small. Very simple set-up. I don't leave the house much so it's easy to keep both charged & filled up with juice. I haven't felt the need to try the twist but many ppl love it. I think I spent about $130 not including juices. I used to spend $100 per month on cigs at the Indian reservation ($25 per carton). I too am overwhelmed at times by all lingo & technical stuff but just keep reading this forum...use the search feature to ask questions too. Chances are your questions have been asked & answered many times over & with a little searching you'll find what you're looking for. Good Luck !

I would also look at the variable Gripper from Madvapes.com. It has a better switch regulator than the the ego and only costs about $60. I would start with eliquid in the 18mg - 24mg nicotine strength which is what most people need at first and will better simulate the feel of smoking. The lower the nicotine level the more like you are just vaping air, unfortunately.

Good Luck

I use a 900 Mah eGO with a DCT. I haven't tried the vivi nova tanks yet, but it's on the to do list. Currently, I'm liking my DCT as I just fill it up and it lasts me several hours of hassle free vaping. The 900 Mah eGO battery lasts me between 6-8 hours depending on how hard I'm hitting it. I pretty much always have a back up charging as well and will be picking up a 3rd, and true backup later this week.

I also recommend staying away from anything resembling an actual cig...at least for me, the point was to do something completely and totally different and psychologically, the cig a likes just don't work for me.

Here is a good kit that I started with and is used as a backup by lots of people as they advance. At least it will let you get your feet wet and the charger works with the ego twist should you get that in the future. It comes with clearomizers but I would also get a vivi nova tank for it and a second charger. There are more advanced batts out there but this is a good choice and is reasonably priced. I was a 2+pad smoker and it worked for me. Being retired I know the cost issues.

Congrats. The Kgo is a solid PV. Here's a review by highly regarded PB

Yup, Phils the man. In-depth reviews and entertaining at the same time.

KGos a good battery, it will do the job perfectly well.....

And then you will want to upgrade eventually to a good VV device :)

Wow, you guys are awesome. I'm going to order the KGO kit now, thank you all for your fast and sensible advice =)

Congratulations on a good choice. You will be so happy you went with the KGO instead of a cig-alike.

Finding good juice will be your next adventure in vaping. There are some nice tobacco flavored juices but most people find many non-tobacco flavors they love as well so don't be shy about choosing any of those that sound good to you.

This thread has a few of the sellers that offer juice sample sizes, Sample Packs - A listing for those seeking a favorite juice.

Also, there is a list of popular juice sellers in post #1275 on the Top 5 vendors (e-liquid) thread.
