I quit my job...because of e-cigs?

I should preface this with the fact that I probably would have quit my job anyway. It was a miserable, depressing place to work. But here's what pushed me over the edge.

I live in WA, and worked for a company I'll not name right now. I've never been one of those paranoid loonies or anything of this sort, but this seems a little bizarre.

I work in an office setting, and obviously there's no smoking while working, however everyone keeps there smokes on their desk, cell phones charging, whatever.

The landlord of building in which my company is renting has a no smoking on the property policy, which means everyone needs to go across the street to smoke. Not there in their car, across the street.

Fair enough. I talked to my manager upon higher about the e-cigs, as a heads up, that A) I did not want to be around smoke any longer, and B) Essentially what an E-cig is, and asked if I could vape on my break in my car. Didn't seem to be an issue. Then suddenly it was.

Fine. I shall walk across the street and stand with the 20 analog users. On one of numerous days I was working overtime, I plugged my e-cig into charge for use on my way home. The next morning there was a company wide meeting, explaining that they had decided to ban the use of e-cigs within the company. They did not want to see, or hear about e-cigs on the property, and if you "need nicotine", just go smoke a cigarette like everyone else. Failure to comply will result in immediate termination, blah blah blah....

Uhm, what?
Yeah, I quit. Not right that second, but very soon after.

Corporate jobs are just as much about supremacy as advancement, the sad thing about it is... you really aren't on the forefront of understanding how much advancing your company is doing in the first place, especially if you're in marketing or some dilbert-esque engineering department.

Find a good factory job with some decent benefits... it will take a while.
But rest assured your boss with care about as much about what you do during work as he does about your well being at all.

Not much.

Factory work is more getting your work done than your boss caring about how it gets done.
Less appearances and more logical reasoning.

I would have requested a written notice or get fired, a lawsuit on this would have been monumental.

My lovely father pointed this out after I quit, however I'm concerned (because they are an 'at will' employer) that they would simply decline, then fire me "at will".

Then Iwouldn't really even be able to use them as a reference.

That is what is wrong with big company's-they think they rule all the employees...
Be proud of your decisions to vape - do not ever let somebody tell you smoke like
everybody else - that's ludicrous. Hope you have better luck at finding a job than
the rest of the unemployed people like me. Happy vaping xconformx!

Someone who was accross the street smoking got jealous of you for vaping in your car
they put a bug in the bosses ear and caused the action
As you say 'at will employment' & can be let go for no reason
Would have been nice to have them say in writing that they dismissed you for vaping
Could they fire someone for putting on a new nic patch or gum on the premises ?

E Cigs are not illegal and therefore they cant tell you that you cant use them with the smokers across the street. I would have stayed and vaped with the smokers and they would have had to fire me. Then I would have gotten a lawyer and made a million bucks. I drink monster energy drinks at work and I'm waiting for them to try to ban them. When they do Ill smash the coffee machine in with a sledge hammer.

Maybe they can be sued for reckless endangerment?? There's got to be something on the books to protect employees from being put in harm's way by a company. By forcing you to abandon a something you feel is a healthier choice for your body and successfully keeping you from smoking and insisting you either use a treatment THEY approve of (all of which have a 93% failure rate) or forcing you to "smoke like everyone else," that HAS to be endangerment of some kind! Unless their insurance company has a policy against e-cigarettes, I really don't see how they can force you to use one nicotine replacement over another.
