I was converted at Mardi Gras

Hello all!

It's my 2nd day of e-cigs and I am already completely obsessed by and immersed in "vaping culture" and ready to toss out my remaining "logs."

I have so many questions.

Let me start at the beginning. I was at Mardi Gras in New Orleans when a friend of a friend let me try a few tokes of her e-cig, which I think now was some model of eGo. Her flavor was pomegranate, which was a bit crazy-seeming, but I could immediately imagine that this would be something for me.

I came home and told my S.O., who is a vehement anti-smoker and long-time Volcano user of another substance completely which shall here go unnamed. He was delighted and ordered me up the eGo-T starter kit, which came yesterday and which we immediately both tried.

I had no idea what to do with this new thing, so I sucked in a huge puff and got an immediately sock-o headache to the back of my head. Took my migraine medicine and took to my bed for a few hours. But as I was lying there, feeling better, I was obsessed with the idea of the different e-juices out there and so eventually got up and drove down to the local smoke shop, which doesn't carry any nicotine mixes but rather disposables and some other starter kits. So I bought a Blu disposable for about $10, came home and, when I finally felt better, tried that one. A much lighter, more aromatic taste--like the way unused pipe tobacco smells, so sweet and delicate--with a vanilla-ish finish! I loved it.

Anyway, I found an online vendor and ordered some sample e-juice flavors and some juices I KNOW I will like, such as toffee/coffee and vanilla. And now I'm on my way!

Questions remain: How do you alternate e-cigs with analogs in the transition phase? Last night I did smoke 3 Camel Lights. Is that weird, to mix? Do people usually vape the same way they smoke, i.e. a puff once every 30 seconds or so? (I have always been sort of a get-down-to-business smoker, and finish cigarettes fast. For this reason, I guess, it was hard to know when to stop--there's no automatic stopping point, like when your cigarette has burned down to the filter!)

Also, last night, vaping during my normal smoking hours (only at night, right before bed, usually with a nightcap or glass or wine), I didn't feel at all weird. Today, I tried a hit off my Blu while sitting in bed reading, and I felt that weird, constricted sense in my head again--not as strong as the headache from yesterday, but there just the same. Does anyone else have this? I am taking smaller puffs or hits or whatever you call them today. Do puffs (long or short, how long or how short the interval in between them) also vary with users? Is there a "right" and "wrong" way to do it?

Thanks for having this great forum here, btw. I have read a lot already, in just two days, and am very grateful it's here, that people are so well informed and also so welcoming. It's like this awesome club I never knew existed, much less wanted very badly to join! Thanks in advance for any replies.

You may have a sensitivity issue with an ingredient in the E-liquid called PG (propylene Glycol) I personally share the same headaches when using a juice that is abundant in it. It's a common occurrence. Do a little research on the topic and see if you can diffuse it with a mainly VG based juice.

Welcome to the ECF community and vape on!

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, all the e-juices I ordered were 100% PG. I didn't really understand the difference or ramifications of mixing the two. I think I will go back and try and get some samples of 80/20 or even more VG content.

There's your problem right there - If you want my opinion I would start with a 50/50 mix of PG and VG and if the headaches subdue try going either up or down in PG. Plus with more VG you will notice more vapor production.

Hi Messalina and welcome to ECF!

You may also want to make sure and drink lots of water. Vaping can lead to dehydration - don't know if that would cause headaches though. Platemail's post abut PG may also be the reason for your headaches. As to your question about alternating ecigs wi analogs, its fine to alternate however suits you. For some people it takes more time to completely quit analogs. As you vape more, you may find that your desire for analogs decreases and the taste of analogs becomes unpleasant. There are so many juice vendors out there with a variety of tobacco and fruit type flavors - it is quite the adventure to explore the variety. My favorite juice vendor is Virgin Vapors - their juices are organic (which I like) and soooo delicious!

Enjoy your adventure into the vaping world!:vapor:

All the tips offered above I can agree with. Should you find that indeed it is the PG in the e-liquids that trigger your headaches, there are many e-liquid manufacturers that offer 100% vg, all-natural, all-organic juices.

Questions remain: How do you alternate e-cigs with analogs in the transition phase?

While I was giving up smoking and starting vaping, I vaped as frequently as I desired. If I got a cigarette craving, I vaped more frequently. If that didn't resolve it, I allowed myself half of a cigarette, and saved the other half. I repeated the above method when another craving would hit, and if I needed to smoked the other half. I was able to get by with 2-3 cigs a day with this method (I was a 1 ppd smoker). After a week of this, I soon noticed that the cigarettes were not satisfying me as much as the vaping, and were actually beginning to taste gross. When my last pack was finished, so was I - no cigarettes since and never wanted another one.

Is there a "right" and "wrong" way to do it?

Somewhat different inhalation technique. Suck on your e-cig like sucking on a milkshake. Into your mouth with a slow deliberate 3-5 second draw. Hold in your mouth, inhale, and exhale through your mouth and nose.

It's not necessary to inhale the vapor into your lungs to absorb the nicotine in your vapor. The nicotine in vapor is absorbed in the mouth, throat, and nose. Exhaling some vapor through your nose will help you "taste" your vapor's flavors.

The PG and VG in e-liquid are humectants; meaning that they "pull" water from your body while vaping. This can cause dehydration, hense we recommend drinking plenty of water when you vape.

Thanks for the replies and the advice, everyone. I was looking at a couple of online order sites (hard for a newbie to even know what to Google at first. I finally, from reading the forums, figured out "e-juice" ...) and I settled on myfreedomsmokes for their samples and nice-sounding flavors with good and in some cases very elaborate reviews. It all came in the mail today and I couldn't wait to try out the one VG-content flavor I ordered (which sounded so odd but had such fantastic reviews): Peppermint Bark. I filled a new cartridge with mainly that and topped it off with a little vanilla. After vaping now for four days or so, I've found that by pulling slowly as suggested, there is less of that headachy feeling anyway.

First report on the Peppermint Bank mixture: excellent and delicious! I have alternated with analogs since I'm really transitioning at my own, evidently slower speed. The whole ritual surrounding lighting up and smoking a log to the end (i.e. knowing when to quit) is the thing that I think will be hardest for me to change.

But I am already noticing that my eGo-T with the custom mix is SO much better than what my old standby, the Kamel Lights, taste like ... I'm wondering now if maybe the transition won't be so slow after all. I have quit logs many times over the years cold turkey (at least twice for an entire year for each of my pregnancies). I could do it again.

I really liked the service, the ease and the taste of what I've gotten from the above vendor so much, I am going to go back and order juices with a much higher VG content and probably also pure VG nicotine (unflavored) to mix with what flavors I have already. I'm pretty psyched! In short, I think a huge lifestyle change--one I never really took seriously as an option for me before--is now ahead.

While I was waiting for the custom e-juices to arrive, I went down to the local smoke shop and bought two brands of disposables, just to try something else. The juice that came with the eGo-T starter pack was pretty nasty. To my surprise, the disposables (Blu and the house brand from Smoker Friendly, which is our local smoke shop here--it's one of those that strives to look just like a "real cigarette") tasted a helluva lot better than I would have expected.

Usually I have been banished to the garage at night to smoke and drink my nightcap. Last night I found myself with only 1 analog left in the entire house, so I vaped and vaped ... in bed, too! My husband was joking about me "sucking on my Nicoteat." Unfortunately for me, he loves this new designation and I might have to put up with it for awhile. I even started falling asleep with it still clutched in my hand (the Blu disposable, which is so mellow) and of course then the Nicoteat jokes morphed into "prying it from your cold, dead hand" jokes. Oh, nonsmokers. They are so quick to judge and make fun.

Anyway, I'm on my way. After I get some juices with greater VG content, I'll report back about the headaches. I am generally a huge water drinker anyway (living in horribly arid Colorado, after all), so I don't know that it's dehydration. I'll go with your theories on PG vs. VG.

Thanks so much for the welcome and the tips!

When i switched over it took about a week. I had 1 pack of camels left when my 1st kit came in the mail. I smoked a cigarette or 2 in the morning, vaped all day and had a cigarette or 2 right before bed. When that pack ran out i just became a vaper and haven't looked back since. Welcome to vaping and good luck making the switch. The main thing i've come to realize is that each person makes the switch at their own pace. It' not the cigarettes you smoke that count, it's the ones you don't smoke.
