When I started smoking 40+ years ago, it was pleasurable and cigarettes actually tasted like tobacco. I am not sure what cigarettes taste like today, but IMO they definitely do not taste like tobacco.
I did not choose vaping as an alternate lifestyle, but as a means to quit smoking. Those that do want to quit, I believe are better equiped with vaping as a cessation device than from all other methods we have come to know.
To date I have been smoke free for 8 months and have reduced both my nicotine intake and frequency as others have stated. Although, I have not set a target date as such, I have given myself 2 years to wean off nicotine, which is only mildly addictive by itself.
The hand to mouth habit we have might indeed be a physical/psychological need, but one that I do not at this time feel is a requirement to exercise. If I am otherwise occupied, I see myself go for extended periods without thinking of vaping, something that was not common place as a smoker.
No I believe it was the other additives in cigarettes that kept us hooked. Once free of these other additives, I firmly believe that we can remain smoke free. That being said, once a smoker always a smoker. A good friend of mine hasn't smoked in 25 years, and he still gets the occasional psychological trigger. As he stated these triggers are very mild in comparison with yesteryear, and of insignificant duration.
So for the folks that truly want to remain smoke free, I believe they can.
