I tried twisting the wire and it tastes like burnt dog crap.

Sometimes I think people like this burnt taste because it reminds them of smoking... maybe their taste buds can't tell the difference between vapor and burnt dog crap (no offense OP.. lol).

Sounds like you may have had a hidden hot spot. I started experimenting with twisting today precisely because I don't like a burnt taste and I'm not a huge fan of TH (a little is okay) and was getting frustrated trying to get a consistent build out of my RDAs.

I just twisted some 32awg Kanthal using 3mm silica with 4/5 wraps at .7 ohms, threw it on my sigelei #8 and it was absolutely awesome. No burnt taste, very little TH, clouds of vapor.

It's been my experience that when I get a burnt taste it's either because my coil isn't wicking properly or I have a hotspot that needs working out (usually those durn legs...I can never get them the same length! grrrrrr).

The only thing that will explode is an unvented mod.

How do you figure? If a battery malfunctions, doesn't matter whether or not the mod is vented, it's still going to explode. The vent is to direct the release away from the vapor's face, and prevent build-up of gases that can potentially damage the mod.

And to add to NatureBoy's reply...

Think about your "standard" mechanical tube mods out there (only a mechanical/unregulated mod would be able to handle such loads)... Think about where most of them have the vent holes.

- Bottom -> Facing out/down
- Bottom -> Facing out/sides
- Top -> Facing out/sides

Now think about how the average vaper would hold the average mech mod... And now imagine such mod having a battery fail inside it while the vaper is taking a drag of it. No matter how you look at it; it's going to be burns in your hand, or burns to the face... Not a good scenario either way.

Sub Ohm coils are fine, but just be sure that you have batteries rated for the higher power draws.

I just picked up some Sony 1600mah batteries with a 30amp limit to avoid having this happen.. Fasttech has them on sale for like $12 a pair.. I don't plan on going lower than .80ohms so I should be ok.. Still trying to get my wraps right without that burnt taste.. I've been looking for a 510 ohm reader but they seem to be sold out everywhere..

If you're using proper batteries they aren't going to explode.

The battery does not explode! The damage comes from the gasses being released (very quickly) in a unvented mod. That's why they all have holes in them now to keep them from turning into a grenade.
A failing battery will get very hot then release gas, potentially catching fire. I have many many 6s, 3s, and single cell lipo batteries for another hobby and they are much more volatile than what we deal with and those don't explode either...

Maybe we have a different definition of explode...

Could you imagine building a mod with a 6s, 70c discharge battery...lol...PLUMES of vapor.
