Saudis to ignore OPEC decision to cut production - International Herald Tribune
The death of OPEC - Top Stocks Blog - MSN Money

i think you might be enjoying the repercussive ripples of a recent opec meeting which saudia arabia walked out on...

Saudi Arabia walked out on OPEC yesterday, saying it would not honor the cartel's production cut. It was tired of rants from Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and the well-dressed oil minister from Iran.

As the world's largest crude exporter, the kingdom in the desert took its ball and went home.

As the Saudis left the building, the message was shockingly clear. “Saudi Arabia will meet the market’s demand,” a senior OPEC delegate told the New York Times. “We will see what the market requires and we will not leave a customer without oil."

OPEC will still have lavish meetings and a nifty headquarters in Vienna, Austria, but the Saudis have made certain the the organization has lost its teeth. Even though the cartel argued that the sudden drop in crude was due to "oversupply", OPEC's most powerful member knows that the drop may only be temporary. Cold weather later this year could put pressure on prices. So could a decision by Russia that it wants to "punish" the U.S. and European Union for a time. That political battle is only at its beginning.

The downward pressure on oil got a second hand. Brazil has confirmed another huge oil deposit to add to one it discovered off-shore earlier this year. The first field uncovered by Petrobras has the promise of being one of the largest in the world. The breadth of that deposit has now expanded.

OPEC needs the Saudis to have any credibility in terms of pricing, supply, and the ongoing success of its bully pulpit. By failing to keep its most critical member, it forfeits its leverage.

OPEC has made no announcement about any possibility of dissolving, but the process is already over.

in other news, russia is eager to punish europe and US over egregious reporting pertaining to the georgia affair.

doubt it, not with nuclear power and not with the wave of modern devices which harness nature's own. as long as big oil is still top dog, we only hear the whispers. once they piss off, they'll be a slew of alternatives, and major competitivity in the market. any road, you'll have a significant amount of time to to save during the "awquard" years.

they're charging $7.00 at some stations in Texas and over $5.00 in some places in Florida- what I wanna know is how can these gas stations be charging those prices when what they paid to fill their massive tanks which won't run out for quite some time, was under $4.00? They are gouging plain and simple- They paid under $4.00 for the gas they now have, but are charging people almost double what they paid for hte gas. This is rediculous

And the sad thing is that we waited in line last night to buy gas because we knew it was going up this morning. Ike was an excuse to stick it to us and we already knew it!!!! Ain't that a beyatch???

I can't believe they have the nerve to stick it to the victims in TX like they are.

$4 a gallon...you folks in the USA dont know how lucky you are...its triple that where i live.

I totally agree with you Mr Darcy the Americans don't now lucky they've had it for all these years when we were paying two pound a gallon they were paying 30p a gallon.
They also don't know how lucky they are regarding house prices . as I could be living in a five bedroom villa with pool in Florida for the same price as a 2 Bed Place in the UK.

But a lot of Americans don't realise the prices we have to pay it's only when I get talking to them on holiday when they're usually moaning about the price of things in the States and I tell them how lucky they are they realise they're not as bad off as some others. But it's because of the American housing economy now which is affecting the UK in a big way.

anyone else hear that 99 cent stores are raising their prices due to the soaring inflation and increased costs to....99.99 cents. otherwise i guess they would need to pay out for a re-branding. the 1.29 store doesnt have the same ring to it.

their cheif executive announced though that just this one extra penny alone would bring in an extra $12 million annually. gives wieght to the old adage of counting one's pennies.

Florida is cracking down on those Bubbas running gas stations that jacked up prices on Ike's threat. I hope they throw the damn book at them. The governor, attorney general and comsumer services commissioner are all after the stations. Photograph your proof of inflated prices and here's your fine, Bubba.

Yes I know, but most people have no choice here, we have to have a car, or two cars.
I live in "the country" there is no bus line here, there is no train nor tram.
I can't hop on a bike.

So many people depend on driving a car to get to work or the stores.

It's not a luxury, it's a necessity.

and its not a necessity in this country?
any way you slice it,we have to pay three times as much for petrol in the UK than in america...we all have to drive everywhere here too,we have a really lousy public transport system, and most of the UK is countryside.
so im not quite sure what youre saying here.
