Well after getting irritated all day with my computer, I finally figured out the issue. Looks like I'm in for a fun afternoon repasting the CPU & GPU. I'm running way, way too hot.

Bummer Oz, I don't envy your task.

Yeah, the pasting itself isn't so bad, but it just sucks in a laptop. Especially this one. You have to do pretty much a 100% complete disassembly just to get the heatsink off. It runs a little hot anyways - I'm clocking a 2.2GHz chip at 3.1GHz - but not this hot. Judging from some data I dug up on this same build, I should be able to knock almost 30C off the loaded side. So it's more than worth doing.

I tried playing a graphics heavy game on lowest settings & I tripped the overheat protection on it - this machine will shut down a degree before the CPU starts throttling.

I've never dug into the innards of a laptop, but it does sound like your gain will be worth the effort. I don't OC anything anymore, but when I was still doing the Folding@Home thing, I had my gpu OC'd a bit.
