Interesting article about the Tampa hospital; excerpt:

Some special interest groups, politicians and the like are making weak claims and downplaying the benefits of electric cigarette, but a hospital in Tampa, Florida made a decision this past week to allow the use of electronic cigarettes within the hospital.

Full article at:
Despite FDA Warning Electronic Cigarettes Gaining Worldwide Acceptance

The reporter working on the story here had asked me to send along any further updates as she finishes the story. The other day I sent her the article on the Tampa hospital as well as other hospitals across the United States that people have vaped in and been allowed to do so.

here's the link to the CA bill in case you're interested in watching it: Bill List
and here's the thread about it where in post #9 the person said that it was to be rewritten

Chicago Tribune article.

....The ban recently sailed through the Illinois Senate on a 49-4 vote and is now under consideration in the House. While the measure would prevent convenience stores, tobacco shops and mall kiosks from selling e-cigarettes, a big loophole remains — there's no way to stop smokers from buying them online.

"If there are things that are (FDA-)approved to help people curb the habit of smoking, I'm all for it," said sponsoring Sen. Terry Link, D-Waukegan. "Whatever the FDA approves, we will approve."

Sen. Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, who voted against the measure, said the FDA is not a standard the state must use to decide which products can be sold.

"What right do we have to say a person can't market or have a product that has not been proven to be a problem?" Syverson asked......

I don't know why it says that marketing ecigs as an aid to curb smoking may not be right. It does definitely curb smoking. Let me rephrase that, more accurately: It allowed me to abruptly and and with tremedously great pleasure to suddenly and completely quit smoking the lethal analog tobacco cigarettes.

But this is not the point of the article, I know. I hope the writer or the source of the info. understands the Bill very well, and that the Bill doesn't quickly expand, if indeed it is specific to kiosks. I hope the governor vetoes it too, if Illinois passes it.

But I agree with Senator Syverson (Rockford), especially if it's proven real soon that ecigs this year are even better than the lethal analog tobacco cigarettes.

And what about the lethal tobacco cigarettes, are they FDA approved? I did have that question somewhere in my brain, and I just remembered it.

That has to be the best and simplest argument for states not heeding the FDA's attempts to ban the ecig. I don't know the answer.

If it's no, analog cigs are not FDA approved, then why ban ecigs based upon them not being approved, if cigarettes aren't either and are available everywhere?

If it's yes, analog cigs have been FDA approved, then why in the hell should we heed the concerns of an organization that approves the use of proven poison-delivering death sticks?

So logical, so of course this hasn't been brought up in all the behind closed doors discussion of the ban high up there in the legislature.

The obvious (blaring, blinding) answer is MONEY.

Cigs are of course not FDA 'approved;' when the FDA was given oversight it was afaik to work with/'improve' what was already there whether they liked it or not. E.g., 'encourage' things like reduced harm incarnations (as rendered by BT of course; yes, more injustice and nonsense for other contenders like current ecigs); to consider aspects like whether flavored (i.e. menthol at this point) cigs should remain available; authority to set nic levels (I think) as long as not absolute zero; set packaging/warning requirements, etc.

Ppl often exclaim about the lunacy of real cigs remaining legal and available while something like ecigs are apparently being seen as not even fit for consideration, but iirc, tobacco cigs being 'un-bannable' in the broad sense goes back to some high court decision from the 30s or something. Don't remember the details of that, but have seen it explained somewhere around here before. Anyone recall the law or decision or whatever it is I'm referring to, that as of yet requires tobacco cigs (or maybe it's tobacco products) to remain legal?

That's Michelle's article, and from speaking with her I do believe she knows the bill.

I wish she would have included info on the issue with Senator Links campaign funding as well though.

Wasn't sure if that was her article at first or not, but then realized the Email address at the bottom of it matches.

Awesome.
