To my GGTS and my Odysseus.

I will answer a total of 5 yes or no questions.

One question per person

After the 5 questions are answered, anyone can guess what I'm going to do. No guessing before the q's have a's.

The person who makes the first correct guess will receive 2 COV brand new in sealed package dual coil attys either 2 or 1.5 ohm, or one of each.

The answer must be exact.

Yup. I'm getting my cr and Ody top cap titanium nitride coated to keep with the brass look of my flat switch, telescope collector core and GGTS base.

I just finished buffing my Brass parts and giving them a beeswax treatment. It's going to be right purdy when it's together again

Ok, here are a couple more. First, all the TiAlN parts brass parts and TiN parts. The only thing that is TIN is the CR and the Ody top ring/cap. All the other gold colored parts are polished brass.

And here is the complete unit in mid mode with 18650

And with 18350 and the TiAlN telescope

As can be seen from the 4 photos, the color is slightly variable depending on the lighting. Generally the coloration could be best compared to what they call a plum bluing in the gun finishing world. It is really a dark violet/blue/grey. It does pick up fingerprints, but they don't etch the finish. Fingerprints aren't an issue if you give it a Light coating of silicone or mineral oil. It's a very hard, scratch resistant coating. Don't forget, this stuff is used to coat mills and drill bits that are used to cut the hardest of stainless steels.

The price was $50, which is the minimum charge. I probably could have gotten 2 done for the same price.

yeah i've seen some lackluster TiN jobs, i guess largely due to the condition of the base metal; but from the photos these look good...better than brass to me. now watch and see what suppliers start doing this.

Yeah, as always, surface prep is the key. It has to look exactly the way you want it to be after coating is applied, and it absolutely must be degreased. I did the polishing since everything had your typical surface scratches from use. The coating shop ran it through an ultrasonic cleaning and degreasing.

If anyone wants to try this they have to remember that TiN and TiAlN are non-conductive. They are forms of ceramic, after all.
