My dentist told me that my gums were looking better and the pocketing had decreased some. He has been bugging me about quiting smoking since i started going to him 6 years ago. been only vaping for 3 months now and the Dr. told me that it must be the vaping instead of smoking since my hygein is the same.

Never got the bleeding gums but stoping smoking is better for alot of things.

I haven't had this problem yet, knock on wood.

But if it is a problem with no smoking then other non-smokers have probably experienced this. Try asking others on a quit board if they have this problem.

Well gingivitis(sp) is a problem that can plague smokers and non-smokers, but smokers will be more susceptible because lets face it, cigarettes are evil:evil:. Over long periods of time the problem may come and go and may not even be noticed, but your dentist will know.

I guess its similar to smokers having a cough one day and the next not having a cough.

Once you stop i'm sure you body obviously will go through changes and the symptoms may become more apparent.

Im sure once you get it resolved it will go away and stay away mine did.

I've had sore gums for about the last three days, and I just found this thread. Then I remembred that sore and bleeding gums are a withdrawal symptom of quitting smoking. Here is a link that lists many of the withdrawal and recovery symptoms. If your gums are sore, do a find for "bleeding gums" on the following page:

WhyQuit - Nicotine Withdrawal and Recovery Symptoms

My gums have been bleeding off and on more since I started vaping. Before, they would bleed just a little now and then, but not much at all. Dentist had told me (while smoking) that I had gum disease. Smoking only made it worse... and worse. Still couldn't quit. He said smoking restricts normal blood flow in the gums. I really started getting concerned when they started bleeding more since vaping. On the upside however, I see my gums are a good healthy color now instead of quite pale. It also looks like the gum pockets are decreasing a little. I have to get a new dentist soon, so I won't be able to have a comparison from the same dentist. Dang!

I think we have to expect some body changes now. Some we may not understand, but I think we all have a whole lot of crap inside us that needs to detoxify and it will take time for it all to happen. Nicotine is just part of it.

My gums aren't bleeding. They're just sore on the upper gums on each side, like above only two teeth on each side....not all of my gums are sore. I'm pretty sure, in my case, my body is detoxifying (as smitti1 pointed out), and the pain should gradually go away within a few more days. I've read it takes a week or so for the detoxification process to be completed (as far as sore gums go).

At first, I thought it was from vaping caramel and fruit liquids, but after I remembered this recovery symptom of quitting smoking, I felt a little relieved. If the pain continues, I'll have to come up with plan B.

Good to hear all. I will look into this PEG stuff, and maybe go for a dentist check up. I have free dental through my work anyway, so shouldnt be an issue.

Hey JD, welcome! I too experienced the same thing, although, I have had issues with my teeth for the past 2 years now due to advanced periodontal disease that I can't combat as I'm allergic to the antibotics they use to put in the gums, well enough of that drama, I have had raw spots on my gums, the space between cheeks and gumline as well and noticed the bleeding as well. I went to the dentist for a check up and he did state that as I quit smoking and my system doesn't have all those chemicals running through that I would notice changes and to just keep a watch on them and use warm salt water rinses when brushing. ...it seems to have helped, still get some tenderness, been over a month now, but hey, better than the old alternative eh?

I would see your dentist and have them check for you as well, can't hurt!

Wishing you much success and vaping is a blast...although I have to learn to PUT IT DOWN....LOL...

Ugh. I really wish more dentists and hygenists would tell their patients about the restricted blood flow issue with tobacco. I mean, honestly. There is no way to hide a smoking habit from a dentist - even at a pack a day of lights, it's bad. The student hygenist I went to a year ago called her fellow students over, pointed at the *backs* of my teeth, and said 'That is why you shouldn't smoke'. lol. :) The tar and other stuff gets into the nooks and crannies where brushes don't reach - and it's absolutely safe to assume that that stuff reaches up between your teeth and gums.

As for me... all I was ever told is 1) I have problems with chronic gingivitis and 2) smoking is bad for your mouth. That's it. I learned more from this thread than my dentist. :(
