Every time there is a news story about e-cigarettes I get bombarded with texts, calls, and facebook posts about some new hyped up danger. As these hypocrites suck down analogs, they feel compelled to try and get me off the "dangerous and risky habit of vaping".

They have done no research into the actual facts of these news stories nor even appear to have given them any deeper thought other than blind agreement.Today's gem was a battery exploded in Utah while being charged from a car cigarette lighter. Let the bombardment begin!!!!

I tried to explain that most of the incidences of battery malfunction (and not just with electronic cigarettes) is negligence. People should be inspecting their batteries and making sure they are not overcharging and heating up. A battery is a battery and any battery can malfunction. They are just storage devices for LARGE amounts of energy and should be treated as such. That being said, electronic cigarettes have a very low rate of malfunction compared to other batteries.

After this I usually get some remark about how they saw it on the news and the reporters did their research and blah blah blah.

While I am happy that they are concerned for my well being, I would like to see people use their brains rather than take every word being said on television as being the flat out truth with no room for further research or thought.

i call it ''concerned ignorance'', maybe send them a letter stating that given their in depth research and unanimous opinion you've decided that 3 packs of pall mall non filters a day is the safer way to go.....because they've been approved by the FDA, and there are no batteries in cigarettes to explode

A: I wantz your shirt. O_O

B: Most people don't understand that battery failure can happen in ANY device if you use it irresponsibly. The technology of a hookahdoodle is new to them, and so it scares them. They are just sort of projecting that fear onto the battery.

Ultimately, they just want you to be safe. Maybe you should send out a blast email explaining that you have researched all of the battery information that you can, and you're relatively sure that you can handle a vented battery in case of one. Until then, while you appreciate their concern, you don't need to hear about every Tom, ...., and Harry that charged their e-cigarette and it blew up. In the long term, it's not going to change your mind, but again, you sincerely appreciate it ( interject better diplomatic skills than I have.)

Just make sure that you're thankful to them, and tell them thanks, but no thanks on the constant updates.

Or, do what I what do.. if it's email, set up a filter and throw that shiznat in the trash. /sagenoddles

I smoked for 16 years, been free from them now for over a year now! My family does the same thing to me! The old "those things haven't been thoroughly tested and they could be worse for you than real cigarettes" is getting old real fast. Especially coming from pack a day smokers! I've done some research myself, I don't see how some water vapor and nicotine is worse than the 4,000 chemicals in real cigs. At least 50 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are poisonous!! Yes nicotine is poisonous too, but only in high dosages.

If you take the battery out of your phone, it's an Li-ion battery. Mine is an 1850mah flat pack. It has the same potential for violent failure as the tubular 18650 ecig version.

But then they will say, "Those things have chemicals in them that aren't good for you. There's antifreeze and carcinogens." Then I have to tell them that PG was substituted into antifreeze because the original ethylene glycol was poison and animals were licking it up where it leaked out of cars because it tasted sweet. PG and VG are in the foods you eat, the soft drinks you consume, and it's in makeup, toothpaste, salad dressing, and hundreds of products you use and consume daily.

Then, they talk about nicotine and how bad it is for you. That makes me explain that nic is judged to be about as dangerous as caffeine. Nic patches are recommended for people with Alzheimer's disease. It helps make you a little more alert and aids in processes of memory and logic and thought.

They probably don't buy it, but they know not to ask me again. It takes a while for me to go through the talk. :)

Your solution is simple. For the next 17 days, link them to and quote parts of
Clinical Research: Electronic Cigarettes
Then on the 18th day, send them all a message which explains that unless they can provide a link to a non-biased study that shows that ecigs are more dangerous than smoking tobacco, you will be happy to have a sex-change operation and open a smoking club.

... Or maybe that you will just be happy to view it.

The antifreeze argument always cracks me up. I let them know that there is a big difference between made with and made from. I also explain that PG is used in most processed foods and medicines such asthma inhalers. Then I still get the "but I saw it in a news article" remark. I find it disturbing how many people take news reports as 100% always true. Even the online "news" sites that are nothing more than glorified bloggers.

I am glad that the people around me one dont watch the new and two are so excited that i am not smoking they could care less that a battery could explode. lol

Yes nicotine is poisonous too, but only in high dosages.

There's an old saying that the difference between medicine and poison is the dose. I read nicotine is more poisonous than arsenic (no idea how true that is). But water in a high enough dose is poisonous, and the cruel twist is water overdose can look like dehydration to some people. Hot day, doing exercise, drinking lots of water, electrolytes depleted, someone sees you collapse, first thing they think is you're dehydrated, and force water down your throat.

I told a smoker at work that I was getting a electronic cigarette (as I called them back then) the first thing out of their mouth was oh no, don't, they explode.
