The thing is, ANY damage to any battery can result is looking superficial, but inside, the chemistry might be impacted (can't think of the exact right word here that I want to use), and in time, (could by weeks or months, could be the next time you use it), something might give, and well, it'll be a bad time.

Is it possible that this happened from usage, not a drop, slam, or the way I inserted the battery?

I guess. If you mount your battery in a vise and keep tightening it for your use. That looks like taking a big nail punch and giving it a solid whack to dent it like that.

I think the "don't use" part is pretty much the consensus. I just still want to know how it happened.

Yea, I havent dropped the mod recently anyway, and not with this battery ever. It would have had to have been a forceful slam when putting it down, and I dont do that either. I really only use this mod at my computer or in bed.

Is it possible that this happened from usage, not a drop, slam, or the way I inserted the battery?

Possible sure but in my opinion not probable and that was a good amount of force that did that. From the picture it appears to be 1/8 of an inch deep. Is the pin on the bottom of the MOD that it happened in? Easy for it to slip out of your hand when going to put it down I would think.

Any idea how that might have happened? Was the battery in another mod with a different negative set up? Sure looks like a set screw dent.
I used it an RX300 and a GX350 before, but I know for a fact that it happened in this mod, and I would say likey during either the use where I noticed the warmth, or the 1 or 2 before that. I use an external charger and would notice a dent this pronounced almost immediately, so I really think it was the last one. Also, the HG2 that has the slight dent has only been used in this mod.

That's the stage I'm at right now too lol. But hold on, youre saying it COULD just be from using it normally, rather than an impact?

If it's the mod doing stuff like that, I'd retire it from use. That is just plain not safe.

any other batteries you have have a dent like that?

That would require some serious pressure, unless there's a weakening in that spot due to a manufacturing fault that left a week spot.

As far as using it, I wouldn't... no way I'd chance a 10$ battery that could overload and waste a mod or worse.
Yes, my LG HG2, that I only use in the same mod I pulled this battery from when I noticed the dent, also has a similar dent, though it is less pronounced.

most have already stated, they wouldn't use it. If you're looking for someone to say it's fine, I'm guessing it won't be on this forum. We're funny about batteries around here.
I was initially doing that, but I stopped before you edited your comment. Now Im just curious if anyone thinks this could have happened from anything other than impact. It seems a few people are kind of interested in the situation. I might have ditch the mod too.

Just checked four of my mods that have similar pins, and none of my batteries show any signs of denting like that, regardless that I almost never take them out, in case that the pressure in time might work a dent in them... and none at all.

That's just scary at this point.

It seems that the general consensus is not to use the battery at all.

If the advice here isnt enough maybe take a look at Moochs blog under the heading "When should you replace a battery"

  • If you see physical damage to the metal top or can of the battery. Things like dents and deep scrapes should not be ignored! A damaged wrap and top insulator ring can be replaced without needing to replace the battery.
When should you replace a battery? | E-Cigarette Forum

I feel there is no safe amount of denting to any cell. The last thing any of us needs is for internal damage to cause a hard short as soon as its connected to any device.
Yea, Im not gonna use the battery anymore. Im just interested in people's experiences with something like this now, and if anyone has ideas on how this could have happened. Seems like it would be a good idea to get rid of this mod as well. I wish my phone would hurry up an charge so I can post a picture of the my mod and the HG2 I use in it.

Good call, though it might be difficult for anyone here to determine if the mod is unusable based on pics. It would have more to do with the tension of the pin in the battery sled.

From what has been posted many members have shared their experiences and ideas. As none of us were there to see what actually happened it is just hypothesis and guessing. The drop that put a ding in my battery was on carpet so there is no damage to the MOD.
yeah, but there's a huge difference with a ding, compared to what seems to be a pressure dent like the OP has.

Plus the fact that it's getting warm enough for him to notice.

When I first noticed it had a slight indent I actually stopped using it and popped in the vape shop to check with him because he is great about offering assistance and sharing knowledge. He agreed I should be fine and showed me a few he had with the same MINOR dings. What you have compared to what I have are worlds apart in depth and that along with your batteries getting HOT are the reason I recommend recycling it.
I want to post a pic HG2 so you can tell me if that one is worse than what you've encountered. My damn phone just charges so slow nowadays. I haven't noticed the HG2 getting hot since I found it to also have a slight dent, but the thing is, I'm not certain if the pictured battery really did get hotter than usual, or if I just randomly happened to think it was kinda warm, and that was coincidentally right after its dent was formed. But Im still definitely going to take everyone's advice to stop using the HD2C. Just a shame to get rid of such a nice battery. Im not gonna use the HG2 either, unless the pic of that battery gets a thumbs up.
