Some mentioned deeper ones. Problem with 510s that's too deep is that some atty won't be able to make contacts at all, which is worse than having to use an O-ring, so I erred on the conservative side.

I suggested that as an option for those with long center pins that want the atty flush (no o-ring).

The pin could then sit off the insulator to contact the atty.

Not as convenient as a spring loaded connector, but no worse the most adjustable 510's that need a wrench or 2 to adjust.

If that is the screw from the FDV 510's, its not copper. It is actually a brass screw that has a gold zinc plating on it...

yepp its a FDV,brass it is then.i sanded down the flat top to the brass and its working ok so far.i havent had any probs but i didnt want to trim all my batt wraps. so the FDV pin was what i ended up using.like i said im a bricklayer and havent done much electrical type stuff,so kinda flyin by the seat of my pants.your hard to read sometimes muzic(or anyone who might know) so instead of me wondering just tell me if brass is bad for electrical connection?is copper better or doesnt it matter?or do we just need to make contact with thew uncovered bottom of the battery with whatever kind of screw will fit the threads in the bottom plate.guess that what ive been wondering all along.?

I think I've found an easy solution to the negative contact issue. I'll post them in a few days after I try it myself. It won't require trimming any battery, and is a cheap and easy fix. I'll send it a kit to all if it works well.

So can we conclude now that the shorting was caused by the 510 insulator being sheared by over-tightening the atty? The pre-installed 510 is designed to have a small gap with most atties and is meant to be used with the included O-ring. I've never tried to bottom feed without an O-ring, I thought for sure the juice will seep through because no matter how flush the atty sits.

I'll also look into delrin 510 insulators.

Brass is fine. It's the most common material used for contacts, often tinned/plated.

Pure copper conducts better, but brass is cheaper and stronger.

This would solve all of the issues.

Well, don't get in a hurry like I did putting it together. Check the pic Paul posted I recommend changing the insulator on the 510 pin and gently push it down enough to past the threads, then install the atty. Take it slow and easy, the second one I put together had zero issues. The fuse it came with is still in it.

Loosen the 2 plastic screws that hold the contact/spring to the 510 pin.

The back out the set screw between the 510 and the fire button. (Look at the other one to get an idea of how far).

Then the whole thing should push out the top.

Need to push the center pin out to use in the other connector.

Make sure the other connector has an insulator in it.
You can see it, and should feel snug installing the center pin.

Many thanks!

Does anyone have this issue going on? My atty is sitting crooked on mymod?

Also the Italian bottle works perfectly. I like the softer touch in this mod.... And I just used the other screw for the negative it's a little off center but works well? I noticed if you adjust it just right the metal base has some give or spring to seat the battery better no rattle!

i'm a fan of this mod in a few ways and for the money, especially if - and lets be realistic here, for a mech squonker, it's cheap as chips.

The 510 is dodgy because the insulator is not solid. That's a major problem because it's a safety issue and different atties have different 510 connectors. Floating pin atties would be ideal, but sadly, that's not what most of the b/f community use.

My opinion is always the same: if you use a mech, it's up to you to check everything. To cry when you blew 9 fuses ... meh!

Yiorgo has one of those limited edition leaning 510 atties, which came from Italy too i don't doubt.

Does everybody have their mod up and running now?
No

Tracking says delivered to mail box.

Mail box still reads MT

No eureka moments from local post office who's supposed to be investigating.

New house. Now starting to understand some people's certain disdain for USPS.

Our family had a 25 yr perfect track record at the old place.

New place? First piece of mail I'm expecting disappears.

Thankfully I've never had problems with the USPS at any of the 11 addresses I can recall. (not counting overseas/deployed addresses though never lost anything)

Now UPS and FedEx are another matter. More than once they delivered to the wrong place.

I have an idea I'm hoping Paul can help me explore.

No disagreement. Same with atties and coils. Imagine someone today blowing several fuses (or worse) because they didn't check for a short. Sure withe protection board can save you, but not a mech.

Same here.
If it looked like a bill, i'm sure they'd send it to me.

Trunker tip: bribe the mailman. Not blatantly like i just said it, but a gift card to eat out - you know the drill. None of my mail gets mislaid now.

Think I'll treat it like putting out too much trash. A gift card to the liquor store in the box.

Try the deeper 510. i think that's the one that's best and corrects for photos.

It was after I swapped to the deep one this morning that I noticed.

Also noticed room to set the shell below the surface or a bit proud (no scratching)

Working on modifying my Stumpy clone. Got it apart, deck drilled and reassembled. Now to cut/file/grind the FDV BF pin.
