I bet it was a typo, they probably meant 1.5mm which would be close to the difference between an IMR and a protected
I have read both you need an extension tube and that you don't.
My connector must be vastly different than most people's--the center pin on mine sits considerably lower than the bottom of the connector itself. The batteries in my GGTS have to sit 10 to 15mm below the level of the top tube if I am not using the stealth cap...
Same on mine, must be protruding a good half inch inside the top tube (GGTS nickel);just got a nice brass telescope and I can see 1.5 threads showing out of top tube...its screwed all the way too (tought the threads were just tight, but after measuring, its all the way in)
Pardon the crappy pics, its all I can do with a 2MP old digicam at night inside the house, lets show a couple though

Looks to me you are using a newer brass telescope tube with an older GGTS. I have a brass telescope tube used with an older aluminum GGTS, and the top threads are VERY much shorter, like 2mm, then a newer brass telescope tube that I use with my SS GGTS. My aluminum GGTS screw onto the newer telescope, but the threads show just like yours. However, with the telescope tube that came with my aluminum GGTS, no threads show... Can show you pics of the difference if you want.
Thanks Martin. Hard for me to see though from the pic size.
The gold sounds interesting. Been thinking bout doing that myself. Silver plating too
