Is any cream flavoring safe to vape?

So I'll try to keep this brief - I've been vaping for maybe six months. For the most part, I am pretty careful about what I put in my body and very skeptical/paranoid about all sorts of synthetic chemicals, especially if they are made by a big corporation or if they're a petroleum product. So I didn't start vaping until I came across a source of organic all-VG liquids. Now that I've been doing it for a while and I'm pretty happy with the hardware I've got, I want to try making my own liquids.

It's hard enough trying to find natural non-PG flavorings, not to mention finding out whether they actually taste good, but then in all the warning stuff I see the warnings about diacetyl, and now not only am I concerned about the DIY flavorings I'm looking at, but I'm not even sure if the creamy flavors from the organic brand I've been buying from are actually safe.

So here's one thing that I found on toxipedia about diacetyl:

Ultimately, it has been shown that diacetyl is just one agent that can cause flavorings-related lung disease:

"The flavorings industry has estimated that over a thousand flavoring ingredients have the potential to be respiratory hazards due to possible volatility and irritant properties (alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones, aliphatic aldehydes, aliphatic carboxylic acids, aliphatic amines, and aliphatic aromatic thiols and sulfides)."

It seems like all the stuff I've read indicates that diacetyl is found in "buttery, creamy, and custardy" flavors. Nature's Flavors has a whole line of diacetyl-free flavors, and that includes a butter flavor, so I would assume that their diacetyl-free butter flavor still has a bunch of those other hazardous ingredients that haven't yet been identified. Ecigexpress sells flavorings from NF, and the butter flavor carries this warning: "Contains Diacetyl and/or related diketones. Not suitable for vaping. This product is intended for food use only." They also have creamy flavors and a custard flavor from NF, and those do not have the warning. Does that just mean that the ecigexpress people are ignorant, or is it just the butter flavors that are hazardous? Is there such a thing as a butter, cream, or custard flavor that is not hazardous? It seems like almost every brand of e-liquid has some creamy flavors - it's kind of crazy to think that everyone using those is at risk of getting lung disease somewhere down the line. Also, I don't consume dairy products, and I've found that almond milk and coconut milk make very good substitutes - has anyone tried using those flavors as a substitute for dairy flavors in e-liquids?

Any help is much appreciated - thanks.

Hello :) Head over to the DIY part of the forum. Ecigexpress sells some PG free flavorings, if you're looking for that.

I do want PG-free flavorings, but that's only one of my criteria. I would like to be sure that there are no other objectionable ingredients either. That's why I like the look of Nature's Flavors, because the extracts are just alcohol and natural flavors, and they have an organic line. It does seem like you can get a better deal on smaller amounts of NF flavors by getting them from a reseller, but I'm not sure if any one reseller carries all of the flavors I want. It would also be nice to see some reviews so I know whether the flavors actually taste good.

wow. There are threads all over regarding "diacetyl or related diketone"

Some might not have diacetyl but have other ingredients that are so similar yet "not related" it can be mind-boggling!

Yeah, that's what really concerns me, because now that diacetyl made it into the news and had studies done on it, lots of companies are offering "diacetyl-free" products, but chances are they still have those "related" chemicals that are just as hazardous only they haven't been identified or studied yet.

I still need to search the DIY forum for this - I believe I started out doing some search there including the word "diacetyl" but I'll have to try including some other keywords to include the "cousins" as well. I'm going to have to order something pretty soon, though, because I'm about to run out of juice, so I guess I might just stay away from those flavors until I get this figured out.

I've also seen that diacetyl is present in small amounts in other things like coffee and vanilla - I'm just hoping that it's a small enough amount that it would be nothing to worry about when using those flavors.

The argument that we shouldn't care what's in our e-liquid because we didn't care what was in our cigarettes is weak.

Some of us wanted to do something about our health (quit smoking), and want to make sure that we are doing our due diligence on what we are putting into our bodies. Why trade something harmful for something a little less harmful. I realize the correct answer is don't vape, but that never worked for me with cigarettes, and I'm not ready to try that plan with vaping yet.

I believe the concern (and harm) has more to do with inhalation than ingestion.
