Is it bad/wrong to do this?

My setup is a Subox Mini. I am a MTL hitter. I really like the 1.2 ohm coils, but have leaking issues, as have others. Have done lots of research, but many of the fixes involve the horizontal coils and don't seem to easily transfer to the vertical ones that I have (adding more cotton for example).

After trying various fixes, I finally wicked the RBA with the ready made coil and set it up. Yay! No more leaks! And I can re-wick it and use it several times, bonus!

Problem 1: I'm not a sub-ohm vapor, I'm a happy toodle puffer. I'm currently vaping this .5 ohm coil at about 15-20W (20W=more flavor but more coughing!)

Problem 2: I don't have the financial means/justification to buy the necessary equipment to wrap my own coils to achieve higher ohms at this time (wire, ohm reader, etc.).

Question: Is sub-ohm vaping at lower wattage and a MTL hit a problem, for me or the device? This is still more than what I am used to, but I could get used to it if it solved the leakage issue, even if I did just buy a new 5 pack of 1.2 coils!

I vape mouth to lung with my Subtank Mini's at .5 ohm (25 watts). I use a restrictive drip tip and the single hole air flow. I am guessing the cough could be from the nic level of the juice. When I moved from the 1.2 to the .5 I lowered my nic. I vape mostly 50/50 juice, but pg is known to cause throat issues as well. Coughing is the body's manner to try and fix an irritant (nic level or pg). I've learned to enjoy the rba more than the OCC coils.

If you're enjoying the vape at those levels (15 to 20 watts and .5 ohm) it's not broke and don't fix it. Making your own coils is really not that difficult (I learned to do it). I'd recommend looking at some you tube video's so you can watch how easy it is. Fasttech is probably one of the less expensive places to buy what you need for coil building. (I use the Kuro Koiler coiling jig for my coils, it's like $6 in China, and there's a you tube on this as well.)

You'll be fine, good luck in your journey.

which rba head do you have; the one with the juice channels?

or the one with the BIG HOLES in the barrel

Problem1: drop the nic level.

That coil can last you for months with rewicking.

you can get pre-coiled wire of specific ohms
Found 351 pre-coiled at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

@BreilaRose

If you have a valing budget I suggest using the RBA. The best tip I can give you would be to make sure that the cotton you use will cover the air holes for the chimney. Not too much cotton as it may give you a dry hit if its not juiced up pretty well when the tank is almost empty. Also after refilling the tank. Cover the air holes with some paper towel and blow into the drip tip and see if you will get some juice to leak. If not then you are good to go. Just pick up a 24 gauge kathal do 6 to 7 wraps for a single coil i think you are good to go for about 1.2 to 1.5 ohms to meet your mtl.

Right now I'm vaping .3 nic 70/30 VG/PG. It is smooth, almost no throat hit, but I do get coughing on occasion.

Thanks for the support!

I agree with @Sir2fyablyNutz ...you can just reduce the AF by using a standard drip tip and closing off the AFC on the tank and maintain an adequate MTL. That said, you can purchase pre made coils in the resistance you desire and mount them on the RBA, there is nothing stopping one from using a higher ohm on it and you do not need to invest in what it takes to make a coil. I think you can get 50 coils @ 1.8 for less than 3 dollars through Fasttech.

You're still pretty new to vape, I'd guess it could just be an adjustment of your body and stick it out for a while. The coughing could go away.

The RBA with the big holes is the best one. :)

I have the AF on the smallest holes right now. It is ok, I just occasionally get coughing.

Checking into the pre made coils definitely sounds like an option, even those are cheaper than the OCC ones.

That's true, I could still be getting used to it. Haven't completely nixed the analogs yet either, but I'm making progress!

Some new vapers cough a little at the beginning, take slightly smaller pulls that might help also. If I were you I would stay at 1.2 for a while. I started at 2ohms for almost a yr, went to 1.8 and am vaping MTL 1.27 now. No one says you have to sub ohm or cloud chase, I enjoy a balance between good flavor and decent vaper production.

A couple things to consider. One is, the smaller the AF the hotter the vape and heat does cause coughing and soreness. And secondly, dual usage of analog/vaping can also cause some irritation. This OFC is dependent upon the user but something to ponder, perhaps going a day or 2 w/o analogs could be of benefit.:)

Wanted to say, it isn't that I'm scared of building coils, I'm looking forward to it, actually. It is just that I promised myself that I wouldn't spend any more $ other than what it takes to maintain vaping until I have completely quit the analogs. So - juice, coils, etc are okay, new equipment/upgrades of any sort is a NO.

Investing $20 or less in coil building stuff will save you a lot over buying coils. One cheap drill bit, a small pair of dykes (wire cutters, mind out of the gutter) and a pair of scissors. A pair of ceramic tipped tweezers if you are making micro coils. I have a coilmaster kit and still usually just use a drill bit. A bolt is even cheaper and can be used easily for spaced coils...

I agree 100% but in this circumstance funding is limited as per Breila and is a dual user, making it even more of an issue having to afford vape goodies and tobacco both. For now, the important thing is to get her off analogs as least expensive as possible then after she can move on to broader horizons. Getting her adjusted to vaping is the most important and there is no reason to go full throttle until that point comes.

Get her off the analogs and 3 months from now we can get her building Clapton coils!:D:thumb:

It may be the upgrade that gets you to nix the stinks for good though. Just some food for thought. Mine took going from flavored to unflavored so it wasn't that expensive. You already own a good device, now just need to utilize that and find the best way to vape on it that satisfies the cravings. :) I am sure you will get there!!! I know that I coughed when switching but who hasn't when they first started smoking? ;)

For the cost of a 5 pack of coils, she can be building. Instead of 5 coils, she could have 50+ potential coils just waiting. Just letting her know that a $30+ coilmaster kit isn't something she has to get, building one size can be dirt cheap. Cheap Walmart toenail clippers instead of dykes, a bolt, a bag of organic cotton balls and a spool of wire costs what, $10-20? And how many coils could she get from that? She is running a regulated mod with a built in ohm meter, so a seperate one isn't needed. Heck, the coilmaster one I have sucks so I just use my mod. Just offering another option, not barking orders or anything.

FYI, I still haven't messed with clapton coils yet. I need more sizes of Kanthal wire.
