Is it beneficial to replace a coil just because you feel like it?

What should I be seeing here, Russ or......am I having a senior moment?

No Roger, you're not having a senior moment. That was just a new atty I got and thought I'd throw it down.

Actually I got 4 new attys !

Whew, thanks man. Once you've had a senior moment or two, you see them around every corner.
Nice attys but is the one on the left drip-tip impaired?:)

I don't HAVE to change every 3 days, but that's when I see the blackish, worn out look of the Kanthal. I notice more battery usage to compensate for the slower fire up time.

My definition of Senior Moment:: The moment you realize things have changed so drastically in this world... you feel like an outsider -- looking in. That my friend,... can happen at 40. :toast:

This is a very good point. If you are vaping and feel like your battery is draining low enough that you should change it, it still has a decent charge and it has not been that long since you dry burned: change your coil. Eventually you will get the feel for that atty/mod/juice combination and will know that you are changing batteries more often for the same amount of juice.

I have a coil set up that is almost two months old. It gets a new wick every three or four days along with a dry burn and a dunk in water while still glowing. After this bath, the coil looks as good as the day it was first fired.

I do tend to swap out my other coils not because it is needed, but because I like to wrap some coil while I still have the dexterity.

I just built this little freak yesterday I just got it yesterday too. I'll prolly rebuild it again if I get bored, to make a vid or to change resistance.

Usually it's a combination thereof that constitutes a rebuild for me.

I use a coil until it breaks or I notice a marked decrease in performance. I don't know the reasons behind it, but an old coil that has been dry-burned over and over, even though it reads what it's supposed to, has really diminished performance. I've been running the same coils in my Derringer for a month. I've re-wicked a few times and dry-burned at the same time, this morning being one of them, and it just isn't hitting like it used to. So, I'll go ahead and rebuild it. I won't redo good coils unless it's a new atty and I'm not liking the build I put on it.

Sent by REO vapor

Almost exactly what he said, same for me. Now I'll keep a coil for as long as I can as long as it works. The minute I notice something's off with it, I'll rebuild.

When I first got a reo and was new to it and new to my atomizers, I'd rip through coils on a daily basis. I had plenty of wire and figured I'd experiment and try as many different coil builds as I could until I found the right one(s) for me. I still rewick with rayon when I need to, usually anywhere from three days to maybe a weekly basis.

I basically found what coils I like the best with all my atomizers. My favorite atomizer is a cyclone w/AFC cap. I run a single twisted 28g micro coil in it and leave both air holes wide open. My coil measures at .5 ohms every time. I'll make 6 wraps around a 1/16th bit.

My rm5, I've tried so many different coil builds in it. Anything from basic TMCs to stove top coils, Clapton coils, twisted coils, double parallel coils, ugly coils, etc. Of all the coils I've ever tried, I have to admit the coils I enjoy the most for the best flavor has to be 28g simple micro coils, dual coils both with 8 wraps around 1/16 or 5/64 depending on which bit I grab first, build is usually around .4ohms.

I still haven't figured out the nuppin yet and actually have it sitting in my vape box. I love how it feeds/drains. I don't like how close the top of my coils are to the bottom of my cherry vapes drip tips, always afraid the coils are either gonna touch the delrin tip or be close enough to melt it. I was recommended to try dual 26g asymmetrical micro coils, I'm thinking I might try dual 26g asymmetrical ugly coils, about five or six wraps each coil. I keep running my cyclone because IMO I get better flavor from it vs. the nuppin.

I think my OCD comes out with my vape gear. I clean my Reo's often and change coils probably every two to three weeks. They get rewicked and dry burned every other day and that's with three mods in operation all the time. I line 'em up, clean and dry them, put wood polish on the wood to sit overnight, new coils, new wicks, clean batteries and Deoxit. The wood polish and Deoxit are about once every month or two. Ok, Truthfully, I probably just like to fiddle with them. But I also like them CLEAN. :)

I might build half dozen coils before I settle on one in an atty. Once that atty is exactly what I am looking for I do not touch it again until there is an issue. I clean my coil and RxW at least every bottle.

I have a dual coil cyclone that I still run because it is spot on with one of my ADV's. Heck, I am afraid to even change RxW in it for fear that I might get something out of place. The coil has pits all over it and the RxW looks like straw but the flavor is still outstanding. I could not even began to guess how old the coil and rxw is in that atty but It was way before Thanksgiving when I built it. When one of the coils break in that atty it will get replaced by a Nuppin.

As a side note each REO only gets 1-2 bottles run through it a week so a coil will typically last longer than one used every day.

Dry burning? Cleaning coils? Rewicking every day or two days?

Good grief.

I wreck coils in about 2 weeks. By then they are clogged and it's over. The time spent farting about cleaning old coils (with HRH's toothbrush!), dry burning them...rewicking them.
Let's not forget re-testing them to make sure you haven't shorted to the cap. What a performance.

Just make new ones. Test them - vape them.

So 'yes - anytime you like' is the answer, unless you are trying to get a record for coil longevity, "Grandpa Trunker vaped this coil for 15 years and left it to me in his will - it's like the first Edison lightbulb".

Not my picture, but freakshow mini converted to bottomfed. I've never used it, but have been curious about it.

Yep, freak show mini. I like it. It's a lil different - the air comes in from those slots and is ducted up to the coil. It vapes excellently. I've only just built it once and will experiment with some different builds. I will have movies on it, the derringer and Rogue this Friday night :)

It hits a lil harder than the Odin, has more air capabilities and is smaller. Do I like it better - jury is still out - but it's been cool trying different attys.

The rogue is badayuss too cause it's virtually leakproof :)

I need a tip for it :). But I've been pulling from it both directly and with one if those wide bore (not so wide anymore) Delrin straw tips. It's a killer little atty. Light as hell, big air capable but kinda loose tip cap. I hear that new orings are coming to fix that.

Movie on it and the others Friday night :)

Kanthal will start to pit when it's still working. ... And since you mentioned 'senior moment' ... ahem. Well. Here's what I remember: I remember the thread was here in the REO sub-forum. I remember the author of the post was someone I think knows what they are talking about to the point of probable actual expertise. I remember it was probably in the last 3-5 months. And, I remember that they said when the kanthal starts to pit is when oxidization is taking place and it can be producing some sort of toxin we should worry about.

So, basing my opinion on some stuff I read here in the forum that I can't recall well enough to find nor link to... I ditch my coils when my aging eyes aided by reading glasses and a 40 lumen focused beam can detect some pitting in the kanthal. At 6 ml per day through an RM3 with two 1.1 ohm coils, that seems to take about 3 weeks or so.

Opinions are probably mostly based on experience, so will vary. I'm still running coils I installed back in November with no loss, including a couple with RxW that is still performing great. A little maintenance is all they have got, seems to be all they want so far. Might help that they also run the same joose all the time.

The dunking in water while glowing interests me. Why did you decide to do this? What differences did you see after you started dunking?

I had to laugh at your making coils while you have the dexterity. I told the luckiest woman in the world, Mrs CMD-KY, that I wish I had started learning to make coils while I still had the eyes for eye-hand coordination.

I actually saw this procedure on a youtube video. It is almost amazing to see the black stuff fall off the coils when dunked. On top of my failing dexterity, my eyes are starting to go further south than I am. Thankfully, there is a Harbor Freight near by.
