Most of the review videos and even videos from retailers showing their products show the person not inhaling when they vape. The question that leaves me with is do you have to inhale to get the nicotine in your system? Inhaling is causing respritory issues for me. It isn't hard to breath or anything like that, I just have to clear my throat constantly.

Inhaling is the ideal way.. to just bring it into your mouth then blow it out seems kind of silly to me. You WILL absorb SOME nicotine that way, but inhaling is the best way if you really want the nic to hit you. Also, I'd have concerns about keeping the vapor exclusively in your mouth, the nicotine might start irritating your mouth & you may find yourself getting sores or other similar symptoms.

my understanding from reading a LOT about this, and answers on the "pros" forum about this very question that I asked a week ago, is that the lungs do not absorb the nicotine from water vapor, the molecules are too large. The nicotine in water vapor is mostly absorbed by the mucus membranes in the mouth and nasal passages, and even then it is only somewhere around 40 to 60 percent of what is available. I hope that helps.

you can but it can sting a bit if yer using a high nic level :)

in comparison to smoking cigarettes (burning tobacco), vapor is a relatively inefficient method for nicotine transfer (notice how most tend to vape way more than they smoked?)

I tend to vape into my mouth only the do a "quick inhale/slow exhale" thing, great hit and good vapor that way.

Best method for nic absorbtion is drawing in like you were sucking on a milkshake, then either inhale into the lungs or simply blow out thru both the mouth and nose.

The lungs actually do not absorb much nicotine via vapor, most occuring in mucous membranes in the mouth, throat, and nasal areas.

Added benefit to exhaling via nose is better tasting of juice flavors. Much of our sense of taste is dependent upon the sense of smell. This can be confirmed when your sense of taste is muted when you have a head cold.

I think I have seen, read, heard, dreamed, imagined, wished, hoped, ??? somewhere that you can blow it out your nose bypassing your lungs. There's supposed to be some membranes there which will absorb the nic.

Not sure, though.

Someone else might know for sure.

That actually sounds somewhat reasonable. I know one way to get medications in to your system fast is sublingual (under tongue), but I would also imagine that the nose could also be another way of absorption.

There is no point to inhaling in terms of nicotine absorption, it's an unnecessary strain on your lungs.

There's been no medical study that I've seen (and I've looked at many) that indicates the principle pathway of nicotine into your system from vaping. Everything is so far conjecture and guesses. In the only study that mentions it I've found,
http://www.healthnz.co.nz/RuyanCartridgeReport30-Oct-08.pdf

Bottom of pg23 - "Comments: Inhaled nicotine in cigarette smoke is over 98% absorbed, and so the exhaled mist of the e-cigarette is composed of propylene glycol, and probably contains almost no nicotine; and no CO...." The key word there is Probably. They're making an assumption. Anyone that says "this study I read says you absorb all the nicotine" didn't read the actual papers. Anyone that says study X says you only absorb a fraction of the nicotine you vape, to me, must post the actual papers from the study to back up that claim or it's just heresay and conjecture.

There's much more simple answers to your respiratory distress (medically that's what it is, no matter how little of an irritation it is)

I've experienced that at higher voltage settings, (2.9ohm@4.7v) but the vape tastes really good, and tons of vapor that will linger in the air. At 3.5v, I can inhale it fully without any cough, and the vapor quantity is drastically less. Not much taste either since my tastebuds are still shot. Point being, your kit and settings will determine how harsh the hit is. Also, how much did you used to smoke (how bad were your lungs to begin with) will affect how long it takes for your lungs to get stronger for lack of a better term.

You can puff like it was a cigar, or draw and inhale like a cigarette, no one has definitively said which is the more efficient way for your body to absorb the nicotine. The best chance for your body to absorb the nicotine would be to draw into your mouth, let it cool, where it'll be absorbed by your mouth, inhale, where it could be absorbed by your lungs, then exhale through your nose, where it can also be absorbed by the membranes in your nose.

edit
@Spider , Fill your mouth with vapor. Next you have to conciously like, 'open' the back top of your throat, sort of like the begining of a swallow. Then you compress your tounge up, forcing the vapor up and out through your nasal passages. You'll have to practice that, and after doing it 4/10 times just now, I find it irritating to the top back of my mouth heh.

eh, ok, long winded post over. Short answer, no you don't 'have' to. But if you just vape cigar style and want more nic, then hold it in your mouth longer before you blow it out.

I was going to say that earlier today.

I couldn't find the reference where this line of thinking seems to have originated, so I didn't post.
Not that I believe it is wrong, but yeah, that is what I was thinking too.

AGREED... although nicotine "can" be absorbed this way, I see absolutely nothing that says it is the PRIMARY way. Not sure where this came from either.

If reviewers are doing a demo and not inhaling, it is so they can comment on the fantastic vapor production they get from this XYZ whatever they want you to buy.

Most of the review videos and even videos from retailers showing their products show the person not inhaling when they vape.

I've noticed this mostly with the sponsored or affiliate videos reviewing the small cigarette form factor units, they typically just pull the vapor into their mouth and then let it out slowly to give an illusion of thicker vapor than is actually produced.

It's actually annoying if you're trying to find legitimate videos on these products as 80% of youtube videos seem to be affiliate marketing videos presented as "reviews".
